Would You Wear… Feather Hair Extensions?

As I was perusing the shops in Santa Monica for the after-Christmas sales, I noticed a handful of girls wearing feathers in their hair. Instead of these feathers being the normal chunky clip-in style, they were thin and styled along with girl’s hair. One had a head full of curls and her feathers were curled as well.  Another had her hair in a wavy pony and her feathers were just as wavy and put in her updo.

After researching this unusual hair accessory, it came to my attention that feather hair extensions are a hot new trend, and can be treated just like one’s natural hair. Usually, they can be straightened, washed, blow-dried and curled, and they last anywhere from 2-7 weeks.

Aside from Free People and Wendy Nichol’s soho boutique, I haven’t been able to find many places that carry these hair accessories. However, I think it’s just a short matter of time before designers like Betsey Johnson and Juicy Couture jump onboard. Prepare yourself, because I think feather hair extensions are going to be the new way to change up your updo for 2011.

My friend just got one of these! i’m not sure if i’d get one but i think it looks cute on her because she has dark hair and the feather is black/white. Its definitely a conversation starter!

I think it’s a cute idea but I know I’ll get harassed by friends and the bf that I’m turning into a bird….I’ll be the next Black Swan! ahhhhh! haha It has potential but I don’t know if this new trend will take hold…at least not for me

I love the feather hair extensions but I had trouble finding a good brand. I ordered 3 online but they are too thin and you can hardly see them! They are a great quirky way to accessorize without spending a lot of money. If only there were more available online!

Sara, I bet the black and white ones are CUTE! I love the idea of black and white feathers, especially on red hair…

Sarah, where did you order yours from?

mine were from plumeyourhair.com — they’re cute and cheap but too thin!!

So many people at my school have them. It was huge in August and September but has already been slowly dying away. There was a local lady that did it for everyone for about $12

    Thanks Katie!

I’ll keep that in mind because I saw that site! I think it’s probably best to wait to purchase until Modcloth or Free People have them for sale on their sites. My guess is that they’ll start selling them soon.

i’d definitely try these for a concert or a night out. I don’t think I could work it during the day.

I wore feathers in my hair one prom and was able to get them from a craft store. They didn’t last 2-7 weeks but they stayed put all night long and would be great for a day/night out dancing, clubbing, or shopping.

I have a friend who spent a whole Saturday over Christmas scouring around L.A. looking for a salon that did these and had no luck. I think they suit brunettes really well, but I’m not sure about other hair colours.

    January 18th, 2011 at 1:55 pm

I absolutely love this and will either make my own or buy them online, depending on how much time I have on my hands. I can’t wait for this trend to catch on more.

Jennifer, what a great idea: salons should really hop on board. People would love that.. I’m surprised that she wasn’t able to find any here in LA that do that.

    January 18th, 2011 at 2:12 pm

I know in Austin,TX there is a salon that does these. Some of my friends got them from there, but they were able to figure out how the stylist put in the feathers so they went to the craft store and were able to whip some up!

I live in Eugene Oregon and these were every this summer! People got them at the Saturday market( a local craft and artisan market in the summer), and had friends do them. They are attached by a little metal clamp, and most peoples lasted quite a long time. And they do look good on every hair color, my best friend is pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, and she got some light blue ones that everyone complemented her on. You just have to get the right color.

    January 18th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I love this idea!! Something to shake up what has become so mundane!

  17. 17
    January 18th, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I personally wouldn’t use them, because I think feathers are kind of gross, but I like the idea very much. I think it looks pretty in the hair of others and it’s a cool way to put some colour into your hair, without having to dye it.

  18. 18
    January 18th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

My hairstylist just told me about these when I was in a few weeks ago, it sounded bizarre, but the pictures actually look pretty cool. I don’t see being able to wear them to work though and I know she was talking about them actually being bonded in your hair.

Feather hair extensions became really popular here in Colorado this past summer, originating in Boulder. I fell in love with trend and no place near where I live in the mountains were selling them. So, I got online ordered my own feathers and extension rings and did it myself. It’s a fun cheap easy way to change your hair thats not permanent. Mine lasted a couple of months.

    January 18th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

I got one just recently and I really like it. At first I was disappointed I didn’t put it more prominently in my hair but I’m glad now that I didn’t because I have thick hair it doesn’t show all the time and I like that its something people notice less often. I also like it for my sake as I think I would get sick of it more quickly if I saw it every time I look in the mirror.

  21. 21
    January 18th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

I think this is very interesting. I would wear one myself! Love it.

  22. 22
    January 18th, 2011 at 3:38 pm

These have already come and gone in Colorado, they were super popular over the summer but now it seems they are moving East, a curious shift in trend direction! I really loved the look but never got them because seriously everyone had them before break. I DO NOT recommend the hot pink, they’re way too much.

  23. 23
    January 18th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I just got feather extensions put in my hair last week and I love them! I am form michigan and I only know of one salon that are doing them right now, but if you go to conditionculture.com they have a list of what salons they’re located. Mine are bonded to my hair with a metal clip and last about 3 months. I have blonde hair that is pin straight and I get lots of complements on them.

  24. 24
    January 18th, 2011 at 3:46 pm

There are tons of sellers on Etsy selling these!

  25. 25

    January 18th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Jalen- I live in Eugene, too! The Street Faire that comes onto campus twice a year has a couple booths that do them :)

    January 18th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

First off, thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I’m so intrigued by how I’ve never heard of this trend and how here in a fashion capital it’s just catching on – yet so many of you from the Midwest say this is old news! It’s so rare for fashion trends to move that way – and I love it! How interesting.

  29. 29
    January 18th, 2011 at 4:23 pm

The only thing I’m worried about is: how do they get the feathers from the birds? I have been researching and trying to find synthetic feathers, but it looks like they are genuine feathers everywhere. And how do they harvest the feathers without harming the bird…?

I wouldn’t feel right if birds were killed just for their feathers.

  30. 30
    January 18th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

I think that Julian Casablancas was wearing feather hair extensions in his “boombox” music video. If you look closely, you might see them

  31. 31
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

They are really big here in Boulder Colorado and a ton of salons will do them for around ten dollars! I love this trend but it is already kind of old here :(

  32. 32
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

I personally wouldn’t wear them, I have dreads and I think feathers would just look so awkward. Also, i definitely haven’t seen anyone around this part of Florida wearing them so it’s new to me.

But I do like the picture where the girl has the feathers braided in her hair :)

  33. 33
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Allison – I’m from Austin and have been looking for somewhere to get these extensions done, or at least find a clip one so I can take it on and off! Do you know which salon it is?

  34. 34
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:11 pm

i’m from portland oregon and i feel like i’ve seen them here since last year. they do work on every hair color, but if you have super curly hair they don’t work as well. and they really do last for ages, it’s kind of amazing. i love this look, but it’s definitely sort of casual and all…not for professional work environments but they look so cool.

  35. 35
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:13 pm

so cute! where can i find these extensions?

  36. 36
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Yeahhhh..i dont know about this. I feel like i could fashion hats out of cornhusks and it would catch on. Girls will buy into anything these days.

  37. 37
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I mean, I like a cute feather hair accessory… but I’d definitely prefer something clip-in, as opposed to leave-in extensions. I love the way they peek through the hair. I’m going to have to make a trip to the craft store and see if I can get some long, skinny feathers haha.

  38. 38
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

I think they look really cute. I like that they’re subtle and not too over the top.

  39. 39
    January 18th, 2011 at 5:44 pm

I’m really feeling this trend, it looks gorgeous!! But I’m a little concerned because 1) I’m a vegan and 2) I have a rather strong dislike of birds. All the ones for sale seem to be made of real feathers. Are there any cute synthetic ones?

  40. 40
    January 18th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

OMG! These are so cool! I am so going to try them!!! Gotta head to the store!! :) Tutorial link was great! Keep up the awesomeness!!

  41. 41
    January 18th, 2011 at 6:07 pm

I believe these are all from a company called Featherlocks. I got them done at a salon in Santa Monica and I absolutely love them! You should get them before everyone else has them!

  42. 42
    January 18th, 2011 at 6:23 pm

For me, absolutely not! While I do love the feathers in “Marie Antoinette,” I hated the clip-on trend (girls looking like half their hair is pulled away by a peacock?) I hope the feathers in your hair doesn’t last. But yeah, I live in Southern California and I’ve never heard of his trend either. So, you’re not the only one! :)

  43. 43
    January 18th, 2011 at 7:30 pm

I think these are really fun becuase you can choose a subtle feather or a bright one. My tennis team is planning on all of us getting bright blue feathers for the season! So excited

Wow, what a neat idea! It seems a little bohemian but really cute. I love the idea.

  45. 45
    January 18th, 2011 at 7:55 pm

Think this is an interesting fad. It’s sort of an upscale boho chic. It’s edgy yet trendy and could be really beautiful. Might have to check it out.

I’m going to college in Seattle, and I’ve seen them on a lot of girls around campus, but I’m from Pennsylvania and hadn’t seen them before I moved to the Pacific Northwest.

  47. 47
    January 18th, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I live in a rural farm town in the Pacific Northwest, and about 50% of girls in their 20′s have these in their hair. I thought it was cute six months ago, but now I’m over it. I’m surprised that it hasn’t spread more.

These feathers are HUGE in Boulder. There are several places around CU that sell them. Its nice to know this isnt just a crazy Boulder thing!

I LOVE how this looks–I did a DIY version for the first time this weekend! There are a bunch of YouTube videos about how to put feathers in your hair (some methods are super easy, like making tiny braids and attaching full feathers at the bottom) and some looked more like the extensions above. Really cute and pretty unique in Minnesota!

  51. 51
    January 19th, 2011 at 12:54 am

Maybe living in Colorado ruined it but I saw them all at once like a year ago and then bam gone. I never got the appeal really. In my opinion they make people look like they are turning into birds and are kind of tacky but hey whatever you guys want to do I guess

  52. 52
    January 19th, 2011 at 1:58 am

    same story as Jalen (#13)
i got mine in Eugene, Oregon
    3 feathers for $5
i get compliments alllll the time! and ive had them in for almost a month now and i expect them to last 5 more months

  53. 53
    January 19th, 2011 at 2:21 am

oh my gosh this is sooooo weird and gross and creepy. I have NEVER seen anyone wearing this. I would never wear this. I find it really creepy. I don’t want a piece that use to be on an animal ATTACHED to my hair!

  54. 54
    January 19th, 2011 at 2:48 am

I have feathers in my hair :) I did them myself and this is the third time I have put them in; typically they lasted at least 5 weeks for me!

  55. 55
    January 19th, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Probably not. I think the feathers are a hippie/60′s/bohemian style. I’m none of those, but I could possible try if I’m feeling daring. My style seems to be more 80′s as people say lol.

  56. 56
    January 20th, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I have these! I got them done at a salon here in OK.

They wash, curl, straighten, everything! They bind them to your hair with a little piece of metal.

  57. 57
    January 21st, 2011 at 12:51 am

I’ve seen those in person before, and they look pretty cool (if you can pull off the hippie chic look, feather extensions are for you).

I use clip in human hair extensions, and they look like my natural hair. The set I got is from Milani Hair, and it was around $180 (but I used a coupon code and got a free high-end flat iron with it).

It’s the first set I’ve ever bought, and I LOVE them. I’ve never tried any other brands, though. I’ve heard that the Jessica Simpson ones look really fake. Anyone know?

    January 23rd, 2011 at 10:16 pm

I totally thought of this when I was wearing feather earrings because they looked like they were part of my hair. And I asked my roommate (who is really good at doing her and her friends’ hair) if she would be able to put feathers in my hair. It’s a great idea, and I still want to do it.

This trend is so cute and we are proud to offer them in our hair studio in Austin Texas. If anyone is looking for feather hair extensions in and around Austin we are offering them at Hearts & Robots Hair Studio and will also be doing them at this year’s SXSW music festival!

I think that these are AHDORABLE! They are so stylish and if you get the non permanent ones you dont have to fully comit to them. Dont go for bright colors, Black and White are the best

You can get feathers to do this yourself from fly fishing shops.

  67. 67
    February 7th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I have some! My hair is a very dark brunette and my feathers are pink and purple and they really add to my hair without having to break out some damaging bleach to highlight my hair. So far, I am the only one in my hometown (small town) that has them but after all the compliments I have been getting, I feel like lots of others girls are about to follow suit.

  68. 68
    February 10th, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I just got some from Plume4You Hair Extensions, they allow you to pick custom color mixes which I think is awesome because thats really hard to find, everyone has pre-made extensions where you have to select from feather groups they have already made. I love this trend and am pumped to buy more feathers !

  69. 69
    February 13th, 2011 at 5:05 pm

I think they are great. Not for everyone, but they definitely have a place in the fashion world of today.

    February 17th, 2011 at 4:29 am

I would definitively wear them! Just beautiful! But I would be interested if these feathers are real or synthetic? And when real, what kind of bird is it?? Does anyone know?

  71. 71
    February 17th, 2011 at 7:03 pm

I read that they are rooster feathers. I bought some recently and all the people that think they are cruel to animals that isnt true. Birds shed feathers all the time and thats how they are harvested. No harm done to the birds :)

Ummmm they do kill the roosters just so you know. but they get to live longer and better than chickens that lay eggs so if you eat eggs then its worse really. i love them (feathers not eggs)

I absolutely adore these as a cute new way to liven up your hair. Not only can you get natural colors but bright fun ones too. You can dress up or down any look with this fun new hair piece. I absolutely love mine and its a mix of red, white, black and brown for every day I think I’ll switch up to color soon though.

Roosters are raised and killed just for a silly, passing fad. How sad is that. And I bet lots of people who have glommed onto this trend are the very same ones to claim that they love animals.

  84. 84
    March 20th, 2011 at 12:58 pm

I have bright red hair, and I just got mine done. Supposedly it takes a couple washes before the feathers start confirming to your hair naturally, but you can curl and crimp and straighten and tease… Well I guess I don’t really know about the teasing… But I think they are a GREAT trend.

  85. 85
    March 24th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I just called one site that sell the feathers & the lady that answerd the phone said the roosters are raised with the purpose of feather harvested, as did another site that my saon owener contacted. When I asked her what becomes of the birds after this, she said “I believe some of them are used for feed/ food purposes” but she wasn’t positive. I would love to find some synthetic feathers to use in my business, as the feather look is catching on so quickly here in San Diego, however until then I might have to reconsider offering this service to my customers.

In Utah These Are the hottest thing to hit for quite some time now. EVERYONE is wearing them, (including my self) we offer them at my salon, in ANY color, and we do about 6-8 feathers put in with the beading affect, and we charge $14 for them, we have made a killing with them! and they just keep getting bigger and bigger, but when I traveled down to Vegas, No body knew what they were everyone asked about them, so I know they haven’t spread too far yet. But Utah is huge on them!

The feathers are obviously taken from a bird, (in most cases here, a rooster) while it is deceased. If roosters and the like are being harvested for the vanity of a person, our salon will NOT partake in this trend. They are beautiful, but we will make sure they stay beautiful ON the bird.

I think they are absolutely cute. They are a fun fashion statement that we will be seeing around for awhile. It’s been brought to everyone’s attention with Steven Tyler on American Idol this year. :)

I am from a small town in Oklahoma, and my hair salon is the only place doing them! Some of my sorority sisters have them and I love them! This trend is new to us folks here in Oklahoma! I’m getting some myself soon!

I love the feather trend! It’s past its peak where I live, but I like putting thin feathers in my hair instead of dying it crazy colors because it still give off an edgier vibe but I can hide them for more professional settings.

Cute look, but the birds they get these from die after being plucked of their feathers, so hope it’s worth killing an innocent animal to have a feather in your hair for 2-7 weeks.

I LOVE the look but I always try to be cruelty free. I did a google search and there ARE some cruelty free (naturally molted) feathers on etsy!

    June 5th, 2011 at 9:13 am

YAY for everyone who supports killing birds for a trend you can only wear for 2-7 weeks, hope everyone here has read and researched other articles about where they come from!

  102. 102
    June 5th, 2011 at 11:57 am

Please don’t use these feathers in your hair. They are very special feathers from chickens that are killed so that people can wear their feathers. these chickens are raised specifically for death. Come on ladies, keep it cruelty free.

love it! but where do you find these to buy them??

  107. 107
    June 14th, 2011 at 12:27 am

Roosters are raised and killed for this very purpose!
Each extension you buy kills a rooster.
This was in the Seattle Times and other newspapers.
Please don’t support a rooster killing industry just for a fashion fad.

  108. 108
    June 14th, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Please do not support this. You can achieve the same look using glue-in synthetic feathers. Do not support rooster killing.

    June 25th, 2011 at 9:22 pm

Eva, I too like the look but am worried about the birds. I have read that the feathers come from roosters, most of whom do not survive the all-over plucking. Sounds a bit painful to me. I too will look for synthetic feathers.

I love my feathers! A friend of mine discovered them over spring break this year and brought them back to our school in Michigan. She put them in for all of us girls and we get tons of compliments. I am having a hard time finding feathers to buy on my own though. Any suggestions?

My cousin is a hairdresser and she was going to start doing these on her clients until she learned that the roosters are killed for their feathers and only for their feathers. I have been looking up synthetic feathers and ive found a few, but so far theyve all been sold out. So make sure the feathers that you buy are synthetic.

I have long hair about 7 inches from my shoulders and i dont know if i should get feathers. Im going into 6th grade and its allowed at my school.
    what should i do?

    July 16th, 2011 at 12:36 am

not only is this fashion fad getting old, but your KILLING a living animal just because it’s “cute”. i think that everyone should hold off on this trend until some great synthetic feather extensions come out, cheaper, and guilt free :)

  119. 119
    July 17th, 2011 at 1:44 pm

brie, those roosters are raised for the fly fishing industry for fishing flies, not because they are “cute”. there are only so many raised each year, not for fasion. you should keep your politics to another board, this is supposed to be upbeat and positive, at least that’s what the rules say, unless of course your politics match those of the moderator…. :)

We are in the process of launching our cool not cruel, Friendly Feathers By E’lan in the next week. These are synthetic feathers that look just like the natural ones. Available in 13 colors and are 15″ in length. Our vision: Fashion with compassion.

It has to be said that we do not believe that the people who wear natural rooster feathers are in any way vicious or cruel. It is our contention that the majority of people who have these lovely plumes have no idea how they are harvested. Be peaceful, be happy!

    July 22nd, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I have never found synthetic feathers so far, so that would be great! As I am from Germany, the “trend wave” has not really come over here with feather extensions. Summer will be over soon, so I guess it won’t happen any more. Anyways, I love them and would definitely prefer synthetic ones if there is any possibility!
Are those feathers as shapeable as the real ones?

Synthetic feathers are out there – My husband and I sell 10 different colored ones for hair extensions. Absolutely nothing comes from roosters or any other bird. Ours are “grizzly” which means they appear to have a black stripe effect, sometimes it’s hard to see & sometimes it’s not. It just depends on the color and how the feather is laying. You use a bead to crimp them in your hair, if they are well taken care of they will last for many months, not just a few weeks. They can be washed, dried, curled, flat ironed, have hair product put on them, etc. you treat them like your own hair. They are not large fluffy ones, but narrow long ones that taper at the end, usually about 14″ and can be cut to whatever length you want.

I loooove these sooooo much! They are fashionable and durable and quite unique! The cons of these would have to be there is close to NO WHERE to find them! (The ones you put in your hair with a bead.) I prefer the skinny ones with strips, and professional beauty supply store have the fluffy ones so i haven’t gotten a feather yet. Also questioning can i use different tools to insert the feather? Like pliers, floss, and a cheaper not overly priced bead? haha okay i still love this fashionable item :D live long feathers!

I have one that I got yesterday. It’s green, and I absolutely adore it. It’s a shorter one because my hair is shorter, but it’s as long as the longest part of my hair, so it works out. Already, I’ve had so many people going “I LOVE your feather!!” The only thing is that I have to work it so that it won’t stick out all of the time. It did that yesterday, too. But I love the feather look, and I’ve been wanting one for a while! (:

You have to kill a bird to get these feathers. So just like fur you should not were these feathers.

  128. 128
    August 28th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Actually, Gumby, I don’t think they are real feathers. Now, they might be, but I don’t think that people are killing birds for feathers. I mean, feathers come off of birds super easy.

You know downy pillows? Yeah, they have feathers in them. In fact, they are entirely stuffed with feathers. You mean to tell me that they are killing birds to stuff their feathers into pillows and hair? I think not. (:

    August 28th, 2011 at 10:18 pm

    @anita

actually the birds are killed for their feathers–they’re bred and killed specifically for them. the feathers were originally used for fly fishing (they still are, actually), and now they’re used as jewelry and hair extensions. they’re real feathers, the birds are killed, and the birds are treated terribly before death.

    cheers.

OMG, I looooove feathers! I just got one done a few days ago and I love it! It’s hot pink with black stripes and it goes perfectly with my hair. It’s not even expensive, just $10 a piece! Plus, they use beads (yay) and not glue (bleecch).
Whoever wants them should get them. They are the perfect hair accesory for not just parties, but every day!

This summer when I went to Dinseyland with my family like we do every year I noticed a tween girl with them in her hair. Then as the days passed I saw almost every tween girl wearing them. It was weird because girls werent putting feathers in their hair a year ago. When I had the racoon tails in my hair last year everyone thought they were feathers amd not my real hair dyed with stripes. Maybe that’s where the trend.dirived from? RaCoon tails mistaken for feathers? I go to an art college amd I’ve only really seen one girl with the feather extensions amd she’s always complaining about how it never.styles right. So I got the removeable ones that you can pop in any time and last lo.ger than 2-7 weeks so I think its worth more of my money instead of spending a fortunes on weave in ones. So will I wear em? Sure, but I doubt this fad will last too much longer. It maybe popular with the tweens but so far I haven’t seen too many people my age, between 18-21 with these… :/

o my goodness! how could anyone get these! k i was reading an article and it said the bird usually die in the process. and if that wasn’t enough, they are BIRD feathers in your hair! i thought they were cute and all that until i read that story. its just sad! its like nasty!!!!!

    September 30th, 2011 at 2:20 am

I think it’s also important to ask where these feathers come from. I’ve recently read an article that so called “feather farms” have started springing up because of this trend. </3
