Would You Wear… Doc Martens?

Doc Martens fashion trend for 2009

In yet another display of fashion’s return to the 90’s, Doc Martens are officially hot again. They’ve been trying to make a comeback for years now, but with the help of celebrities like Daisy Lowe and Agyness Deyn (pictured above), the Dr. Martens trend has finally crossed over into the mainstream for 2009. From cutting edge style blogs to the city streets, everyone’s favorite ironic combat boot is showing up everywhere these days.

But is this trend really wearable? Personally, I think so – I’m a fan of the Docs revival and I don’t even know why.

I’m not crazy about the boots on their own, but a shiny black pair of Docs worn with the right outfit somehow looks completely fresh, cool, and modern to me. In my mind, it defies all logic. To be honest, the girls at Lookbook.nu can explain it better than I can: check out the Doc Martens page and I think you’ll see what I mean.

So what do you guys think? Would you wear Doc Martens? If so, how would you wear them? Whether you’re obsessed with this trend or think it should stay in the 90’s, leave a comment and let us all know what you think!

Not my cup of tea- but my style is really feminine so these boots are just not for me.

I think they suit guys much better than girls – i.e. there’s a “punkish” guy in my class that totally pulls these off.

I don’t think they’d look any good me, but i ADORE them! i’m all about the 90’s revival.. must be all that vintage 90210 i’ve been watching.. Anywho. I need to try a pair on! perhaps while i’m in London?

I will not be sporting these shoes…not my style. i have a friend that wears these and ya, she can pull it off for herself cuz she is pretty quirky in her dress style but people still think “wtf” when they see them

Nope,i think they look hideous…especially the pink ones…no nononononononono…bad trend, bad really really bad.

Yep, definitely! My friend had some in dark red since she was about twelve years old and always got new ones when they got too small.
I consider buying some for myself, too.

YES YES YES! I own 2 pairs of docs, one simple black pair and one in bright orange. i have been wearing them for years, even when they were considered to be everything but trendy.
my style is kinda daisy lowe-/new jenny humphrey-ish (rock’n'roll but still girly), so i love giving an otherwise really girly outfit (like a floral dress) an edge by adding some studded bangles and my docs.

I have some! Pink ones with white lace actually. And I love them. The only problem? They hurt like hell! But I tend to wear mine with denim shorts and skirts, I have yet to try them with any type of long pant.

Oddly enough, I was thinking of digging them out and wearing mine just the other day! Then this article comes along, and I think it’s a sign. It only works with the right outfit though, and I don’t know how right my outfits would be. I’ll have to work on it, see if I can somehow make them work. I love the pink ones, I want some so bad! But my feet are big, so I can only wear the black ones and not look totally stupid :(

Mandi, hang in there — once they break in, I hear they are the most comfortable things on earth! I personally love Docs; never worn ‘em, but I loooove the early highschool nostalgia they invoke. Love them with skirts, eyeliner, and a ton of attitude! Such a great way to add interest to an otherwise “girly” outfit.

I have loved them ever since that show “Daria.” Oh man, this post makes me happy.

I LOVE this look. It’s really popular among fashion bloggers at the moment. I think they are such a great trend….it makes for great contrast to a floral sundress, and looks really hot with shorts.

I wore Doc Martens the last time they were in style. Of course, I had the sandals because I’m from a warm climate and boots are just impractical there. Do you remember those slide on sandals with the flower cut-outs? Such fond memories. I don’t think I’ll be hopping on this trend wagon the second time around.

I love Doc Martens, and I don’t care if they’re “in” or not. I really want a white pair like in the first photo – gorgeous!

yes yes yes, I have 2 pairs already, and when I get more money, I intend to get more.

I have two pairs of doc martens and loooove them. they’ve been my obsession for a while, and finally got my hands on them. I’m definitely eying the red ones and pastel colored. But I would love to find a pair that have heels like I saw a fashion blogger sport. I have yet to find them anywhere, though.

    June 24th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I love how it looks!! I think they’re amazing! and very comfortable, by the way :)
Unfortunely, they don’t work for chubby legs like mine :(
They look amazing on skinny legs…

    June 24th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

I don’t think this trend is for me. I’m not a huge fan of Doc Martins…I have small feet so they’d just look really weird on me.

    June 24th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

i get the whole quirky/edgy/ironic deal but i mean they’re just really not very cute. at all. they’re like a bulkier, heavier, manlier version of converses. i wont be wearing them.

NO. WAY. i think it looks just ridiculous

I have two words for this so-called “trend-revival”.
    They are as follows:

    EW!!!!!!!!!!
    WHYYYY?!?!?!??!?!

  24. 24
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I definitly would wear Docs. I used to own a pair when I was younger, going through my “goth stage” but I love the ankle Docs that come in white and a variety of colours! They’re awesome!

Chucks are cuter, if not already overdone.

    June 24th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

I love Doc Martens! I have a pair of super bright orange docs that I’ve had for the past two years. Not only do they add a cute, quirky look to a lot of my outfits, but they are also really useful in the winter. I never slip on ice when I’m wearing my doc. Fashionable and useful! That doesn’t happen often!

  27. 27
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Nah, they are a bit chunky for me.

  28. 28
    June 24th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

YES YES YES. I wore my Bean boots all last winter, but will be trading them for Docs as soon as I can get my hands on pair. Hopefully they’ll add a bit of quirk to my prep school uniform!

  29. 29
    June 24th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Yes I would wear them. The white ones are my favorite. Its different and I know a lot of people would not wear it.

I used to have a pair when I was a kid, and I just don’t think I’d be able to take myself seriously wearing them now ….

    June 25th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

My sister bought me a pair of calf-high platform black docs like eight years ago, and only recently did I start wearing them. I adore them with jeans, a wool peacoat and a military style hat in the winter, and they are my go-to shoes for rainy weather. :) love them!

  33. 33
    June 26th, 2009 at 2:07 am

    no. i hate them.

  34. 34
    June 27th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Okay, so at first I hated them. And after looking at the page on Lookbook, I understand more where you are coming from. The outfits pictured on that site are cute, but I just don’t see myself wearing something like that every day.

so yeah, I think they’d work on maybe a FEW people, but not for me.

    June 27th, 2009 at 10:32 am

    I LOVE these boots.

I wear hi-top converse and rainboots all the time… and my friend got some of these, and I immediately wanted some.

Of course, it didn’t help that I had just watched the entire My So Called Life. ;D

In my various teen omg punk phases, i tried to wear doc martens.
my feet end up looking like giants and they are NOT cute on me.
I can appreciate it on certain people, but otherwise, no.

  37. 37
    June 28th, 2009 at 10:13 am

of course i’d wear them! :D

i used to have a pair as a kid and while i was growing up i developed this love for boots a la Docs, timberland, etc., and i’m going to save up to get myself a pair (black, most likely) around my birthday. these would look totally cool!

    June 28th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

*sigh* I used to have a lovely purple pair around the time i finished primary school and started secondary school but there were quickly banished when other girls in my class hastily decided that they were “uncool” and i ashamedly followed the crowd being too shy to stand out….. Oh I’d love to have them now!!!!!

This is a trend? I always thought it was a classic! I love Docs and other Doc-style boots. They’ll never go out of style.

    June 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

When I was younger, I used to wear them all the time! I would wear them again if they were practical in Texas…

I loooooooooove Doc Martens! But I’m very petite, and I think I’d look ridiculous in such a clunky boot.

But, all hope is not lost! Doc Martens sells a boot called the Darcie that is styled like a classic Doc, but it has a high heel! I’m so in love, and if they didn’t cost $150 a pair I’d have bought them months ago.

Love Docs, trendy or not. They’re iconic in their own right and definitely not for everyone.

    July 12th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I lovee them! They don’t really go with my style though.I think I might get some anyway, but they’re more than I would usually pay for shoes that I wouldn’t wear all the time, they have some floral ones for sale in schuh, what do you think?

    July 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 am

    Omgosh!!!
    yes!
i’m all about being different and combat boots are top of the list for cool!
they make every outfit look amazing!
i think they put a great edge on the girly looking outfits because of the contrast!
i have a black high top pair! :D

Love them! I have a metallic grey pair, and it always draws looks…but hey, that’s what I’m going for! Life is boring when everyone wears the same old black leather stiletto boots…

Heyyy i adore these boots they make a HUGE statment about who you are. And can totally transform sn outfit. I don’t no why people are saying they have just came back in fashion I mean how can they ever go out????????

  51. 51
    November 3rd, 2009 at 1:39 pm

They were in style back in like 1992. I don’t think they really ever went out of style. I wear my 18 hole black boots to work with my black pants and oxford shirts. They are very comfortable. Also being in a colder region they are great for keeping my feet warm in my drafty office. I love them. They may not be the most femine shoe in the world, but I am ok with that, because when I am walking to my vehicle at night and its cold, my feet are very warm & happy! Fashion? Who cares! Be your own person, follow your own trends. All trends seems to start with the ones who don’t care what they are wearing.

okay, confession. im a very proud owner of a pair of dark green doc marts. BUT now, besides pairing them up with my white tank tops and flannel shirts (and jeans), im running out of ideas! but i really really love my boots (because they’re so comfortable) lol help!

    December 26th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

i LOVE docs , i have 5 pairs, all different styles.
they go with all of my clothes, although i have to wear certain things with my 12 eyelet boots cause not all jeans look good tucked in. i also wear fishnets under my jeans and roll them up a bit over the edge of my boots.
they mostly look good with skinnys, but i wear them with skirts and all those other fun clothing .
its a fun boot to expirament with. so if your a total girly girl, just try them anyways. you can make them girly . give these boots a chance.
