Would You Wear… Doc Martens?

Doc Martens fashion trend - celebrities doc martens

In yet another display of fashion’s return to the ’90s, Doc Martens are officially hot again. They’ve been trying to make a comeback for years now, but with the help of celebrities in Doc Martens, like Daisy Lowe and Agyness Deyn (pictured above), the Dr. Martens trend has finally crossed over into the mainstream. From cutting edge style blogs to the city streets, everyone’s favorite ironic combat boot is showing up everywhere these days.

But is this trend really wearable? Personally, I think so – I’m a fan of the Docs revival and I don’t even know why.

I’m not crazy about the boots on their own, but a shiny black pair of Docs worn with the right outfit somehow looks completely fresh, cool, and modern to me. In my mind, it defies all logic. To be honest, the girls at can explain it better than I can: check out the Doc Martens page and I think you’ll see what I mean.

What do you think of the Doc Martens trend

So what do you guys think? Would you wear Doc Martens? If so, how would you wear them? Whether you’re obsessed with this trend or think it should stay in the 90’s, leave a comment and let us all know what you think!

Not my cup of tea- but my style is really feminine so these boots are just not for me.

I think they suit guys much better than girls – i.e. there’s a “punkish” guy in my class that totally pulls these off.

I don’t think they’d look any good me, but i ADORE them! i’m all about the 90’s revival.. must be all that vintage 90210 i’ve been watching.. Anywho. I need to try a pair on! perhaps while i’m in London?

I will not be sporting these shoes…not my style. i have a friend that wears these and ya, she can pull it off for herself cuz she is pretty quirky in her dress style but people still think “wtf” when they see them

Nope,i think they look hideous…especially the pink ones…no nononononononono…bad trend, bad really really bad.

    June 24th, 2009 at 6:07 am

Yep, definitely! My friend had some in dark red since she was about twelve years old and always got new ones when they got too small.
I consider buying some for myself, too.

YES YES YES! I own 2 pairs of docs, one simple black pair and one in bright orange. i have been wearing them for years, even when they were considered to be everything but trendy.
my style is kinda daisy lowe-/new jenny humphrey-ish (rock’n’roll but still girly), so i love giving an otherwise really girly outfit (like a floral dress) an edge by adding some studded bangles and my docs.

I have some! Pink ones with white lace actually. And I love them. The only problem? They hurt like hell! But I tend to wear mine with denim shorts and skirts, I have yet to try them with any type of long pant.

    June 24th, 2009 at 8:18 am

Oddly enough, I was thinking of digging them out and wearing mine just the other day! Then this article comes along, and I think it’s a sign. It only works with the right outfit though, and I don’t know how right my outfits would be. I’ll have to work on it, see if I can somehow make them work. I love the pink ones, I want some so bad! But my feet are big, so I can only wear the black ones and not look totally stupid :(

Mandi, hang in there — once they break in, I hear they are the most comfortable things on earth! I personally love Docs; never worn ‘em, but I loooove the early highschool nostalgia they invoke. Love them with skirts, eyeliner, and a ton of attitude! Such a great way to add interest to an otherwise “girly” outfit.

I have loved them ever since that show “Daria.” Oh man, this post makes me happy.

I LOVE this look. It’s really popular among fashion bloggers at the moment. I think they are such a great trend….it makes for great contrast to a floral sundress, and looks really hot with shorts.

  12. 12
    June 24th, 2009 at 10:10 am

I wore Doc Martens the last time they were in style. Of course, I had the sandals because I’m from a warm climate and boots are just impractical there. Do you remember those slide on sandals with the flower cut-outs? Such fond memories. I don’t think I’ll be hopping on this trend wagon the second time around.

I love Doc Martens, and I don’t care if they’re “in” or not. I really want a white pair like in the first photo – gorgeous!

    June 24th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

yes yes yes, I have 2 pairs already, and when I get more money, I intend to get more.

    June 24th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

I have two pairs of doc martens and loooove them. they’ve been my obsession for a while, and finally got my hands on them. I’m definitely eying the red ones and pastel colored. But I would love to find a pair that have heels like I saw a fashion blogger sport. I have yet to find them anywhere, though.

    June 24th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I love how it looks!! I think they’re amazing! and very comfortable, by the way :)
Unfortunely, they don’t work for chubby legs like mine :(
They look amazing on skinny legs…

    June 24th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

I don’t think this trend is for me. I’m not a huge fan of Doc Martins…I have small feet so they’d just look really weird on me.

  19. 19
    June 24th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

i get the whole quirky/edgy/ironic deal but i mean they’re just really not very cute. at all. they’re like a bulkier, heavier, manlier version of converses. i wont be wearing them.

NO. WAY. i think it looks just ridiculous

I have two words for this so-called “trend-revival”.
    They are as follows:

  24. 24
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I definitly would wear Docs. I used to own a pair when I was younger, going through my “goth stage” but I love the ankle Docs that come in white and a variety of colours! They’re awesome!

  25. 25
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Chucks are cuter, if not already overdone.

  26. 26
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

I love Doc Martens! I have a pair of super bright orange docs that I’ve had for the past two years. Not only do they add a cute, quirky look to a lot of my outfits, but they are also really useful in the winter. I never slip on ice when I’m wearing my doc. Fashionable and useful! That doesn’t happen often!

  27. 27
    June 24th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Nah, they are a bit chunky for me.

  28. 28
    June 24th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

YES YES YES. I wore my Bean boots all last winter, but will be trading them for Docs as soon as I can get my hands on pair. Hopefully they’ll add a bit of quirk to my prep school uniform!

  29. 29
    June 24th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Yes I would wear them. The white ones are my favorite. Its different and I know a lot of people would not wear it.

  30. 30
    June 25th, 2009 at 12:58 am

    hell yeah :D

  31. 31
    June 25th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I used to have a pair when I was a kid, and I just don’t think I’d be able to take myself seriously wearing them now ….

  32. 32
    June 25th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

My sister bought me a pair of calf-high platform black docs like eight years ago, and only recently did I start wearing them. I adore them with jeans, a wool peacoat and a military style hat in the winter, and they are my go-to shoes for rainy weather. :) love them!

  33. 33
    June 26th, 2009 at 2:07 am

    no. i hate them.

  34. 34
    June 27th, 2009 at 12:15 am

Okay, so at first I hated them. And after looking at the page on Lookbook, I understand more where you are coming from. The outfits pictured on that site are cute, but I just don’t see myself wearing something like that every day.

so yeah, I think they’d work on maybe a FEW people, but not for me.

  35. 35
    June 27th, 2009 at 10:32 am

    I LOVE these boots.

I wear hi-top converse and rainboots all the time… and my friend got some of these, and I immediately wanted some.

Of course, it didn’t help that I had just watched the entire My So Called Life. ;D

  36. 36
    June 28th, 2009 at 9:05 am

In my various teen omg punk phases, i tried to wear doc martens.
my feet end up looking like giants and they are NOT cute on me.
I can appreciate it on certain people, but otherwise, no.

  37. 37
    June 28th, 2009 at 10:13 am

of course i’d wear them! :D

i used to have a pair as a kid and while i was growing up i developed this love for boots a la Docs, timberland, etc., and i’m going to save up to get myself a pair (black, most likely) around my birthday. these would look totally cool!

  38. 38
    June 28th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

*sigh* I used to have a lovely purple pair around the time i finished primary school and started secondary school but there were quickly banished when other girls in my class hastily decided that they were “uncool” and i ashamedly followed the crowd being too shy to stand out….. Oh I’d love to have them now!!!!!

  39. 39
    June 29th, 2009 at 1:00 am

This is a trend? I always thought it was a classic! I love Docs and other Doc-style boots. They’ll never go out of style.

  40. 40
    June 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

When I was younger, I used to wear them all the time! I would wear them again if they were practical in Texas…

  41. 41
    July 1st, 2009 at 4:24 pm

I loooooooooove Doc Martens! But I’m very petite, and I think I’d look ridiculous in such a clunky boot.

But, all hope is not lost! Doc Martens sells a boot called the Darcie that is styled like a classic Doc, but it has a high heel! I’m so in love, and if they didn’t cost $150 a pair I’d have bought them months ago.

Love Docs, trendy or not. They’re iconic in their own right and definitely not for everyone.

    July 12th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I lovee them! They don’t really go with my style though.I think I might get some anyway, but they’re more than I would usually pay for shoes that I wouldn’t wear all the time, they have some floral ones for sale in schuh, what do you think?

  46. 46
    July 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 am

i’m all about being different and combat boots are top of the list for cool!
they make every outfit look amazing!
i think they put a great edge on the girly looking outfits because of the contrast!
i have a black high top pair! :D

  47. 47
    July 31st, 2009 at 12:11 am

Love them! I have a metallic grey pair, and it always draws looks…but hey, that’s what I’m going for! Life is boring when everyone wears the same old black leather stiletto boots…

  48. 48
    August 3rd, 2009 at 9:31 am

I bought my first ever dr martens today! Its patent black and im loving it <3
My style, I would say, is rocker chic and i have already tried pairing it with some skinny jeans :D cant wait for fall to arrive!!

    August 5th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

I love them! I got some for my birhtday- they are all feminine because they are white covered with lots of little pastel flowers. I think they were a spring special edition…

Heyyy i adore these boots they make a HUGE statment about who you are. And can totally transform sn outfit. I don’t no why people are saying they have just came back in fashion I mean how can they ever go out????????

  51. 51
    November 3rd, 2009 at 1:39 pm

They were in style back in like 1992. I don’t think they really ever went out of style. I wear my 18 hole black boots to work with my black pants and oxford shirts. They are very comfortable. Also being in a colder region they are great for keeping my feet warm in my drafty office. I love them. They may not be the most femine shoe in the world, but I am ok with that, because when I am walking to my vehicle at night and its cold, my feet are very warm & happy! Fashion? Who cares! Be your own person, follow your own trends. All trends seems to start with the ones who don’t care what they are wearing.

okay, confession. im a very proud owner of a pair of dark green doc marts. BUT now, besides pairing them up with my white tank tops and flannel shirts (and jeans), im running out of ideas! but i really really love my boots (because they’re so comfortable) lol help!

    December 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

I have been dieing to get one!
I really want a pair. They’re just so damn amazing. :)
And Nicolee, there are floral docs at Urban Outfitters.
I myself have been eyeing them.

  55. 55
    December 26th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

i LOVE docs , i have 5 pairs, all different styles.
they go with all of my clothes, although i have to wear certain things with my 12 eyelet boots cause not all jeans look good tucked in. i also wear fishnets under my jeans and roll them up a bit over the edge of my boots.
they mostly look good with skinnys, but i wear them with skirts and all those other fun clothing .
its a fun boot to expirament with. so if your a total girly girl, just try them anyways. you can make them girly . give these boots a chance.

I love Doc Martens! I will only wear the black ones or the brown ones.
I own the black kind but I will buy the brown ones. Who cares if their not back in style. I wear them cause i love them, not cause their in. It gives me that indie/alternative look, just like back in the 90’s. Besides, docs will last a long time-awesome quality.

    April 13th, 2010 at 12:48 am

As long as youre wearing a pair of real cool torn jeans, denim shorts, or a peasant skirt, these boots will look kick ass. They suit short legs, long legs, skinny ones and chubby ones, pale ones and dark ones these boots give a very grungy rockin’ style with the right clothes. Long haired dudes look very rad in them I noticed.

    ALLY: try colored skinnies!

I love DMS and own various stuff, from boots to mjs to shoes! I are always IN for me! I have the pink plain tarten ones ( patent) and cant wait for the polka dotted ones that are coming out.

  61. 61

Totally!!! I have two pairs, one black and the other one white+black glitter flocking and are gorgeous. With a short jean or a black leggings and something bold, modern or simply something 90s.

I have a pair of Docs that i bought a few years ago and i rarely wore them… Im in Texas and its pretty warm out here so I have to wear my Betty’s. They look alot like Mary Janes. I should start wearing them again. But not with my shorts… I should do what Jane Lane did in Daria and just wear black leggings with them. Im a new sophmore in HS anyways.I’ll make some friends that are a but like me.BUT IM NOT GIRLY DAMMIT.

  67. 67
    July 24th, 2010 at 10:13 am

Ive pretty much only wore dr martens since i was about 10, my dad still has his from the 80’s, cherry red, the ones that go half way up your leg. he used to ware them with skinny jeans and either a flannel or a checked shirt. he says that pretty much every one between the age of 15 and 25 (girls and guys) used to ware them.

  68. 68
    July 26th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

I love Doc Martens. I own a black pair that reach right below the knee and have rose embroidery along the sides. They’re great. I can wear them with cute, short floral-patterned dresses and tights (or no tights, when I’m feeling bold enough), over jeans, or even – as I am about to wear them right now – with a pair of shorts (tights optional, as well). Although, I must admit: I don’t think Doc Martens are for everyone. You have to have a certain confidence, because they do have a more masculine feel to them, and you have to know how to wear them. Regardless, they’re a great fashion statement, and I’m glad they’re back in style, and will continue to wear them even after they go out of style.

I really want a pair, and have for a long time.
    Maybe for Christmas. :D
I think a pair of 1914’s would look great over some black skinnies and a grey v-neck. They work for my style, so yeah I’d wear them. :P

I LOVE my docs-silver-and found them at a consignment shop, BRAND NEW (though I would have prefered them a little worn:/ they hurt like crazy!) for $26. Not even kidding. I live in florida, though, so it’s completley impractical:( I might just wear them tomorrow, though with a pair of jean shorts:) The only thing is I have skinny legs and while someone earlier said they look good on skinny legs, I feel like they look 10x larger on me than other girls.

    February 25th, 2011 at 11:21 pm

I love them! Im a bit tall so I feel even taller when I wear them, which Im a little self conscious of haha, but I love the look of them.I have dark blue ones =] dont know what to wear with them though!

I couldn’t find Docs boots used and couldn’t afford new ones. But I was cruising one of my local Goodwill stores and found a pair of- I’m guessing- Army boots someone had been issued, worn, and donated. They fit like a dream and cost $15. I know they won’t have the Docs cachet but I plan to wear them with all the same things I’d wear Docs with. I have a feeling the Docs were created to mimic these boots in the first place so I’m going back to the roots of the trend. :)

Hell yes! I adore them and would wear them with practically anything and everything. The finishing -unique- touches like the yellow stitching make them that bit more a adorable, never mind the feminine-masculine look they have going on! I would probably be more likely to wear them with tights, long socks or trousers than anything else. :) Great post. I was looking for some Doc Marten photos for a post I am writing and this post came up; great photos, especially the first one. :)

I personally LOVE doc martens! They’re amazing! I think they go with almost everything I wear (grunge, rocker chic, yet still femenime and kind of girly style). Got some white with black polka dots about 2 years ago, but I never ended up wearing them and eventually sold them. ): But about 3 days ago I got some black ones and they are my new loves<3
Although, I would like to know if anybody knows how much longer does it take to break them in? I am on break right now so I wear them all day while at home and also try to wear them when I go out. How long does it take? If anybody has experience, can you please help me! Thanks(:

Pam, they usually take a good few months (2-6) to break in! Be prepared for rubbing and blisters! But don’t give up! Doc Martens are great.

I think anyone who thinks ( out the box ) and dares to take chances will succeed ppl who cant will always be afraid :)
they are grodious there not Hidious at all what hidious is is the fact there to scared to take a step.
I mean look at japan, they wear w.e they want cus they do take steps.
I would rather be a black sheep then fallow a group around like a zombie and like u dont have style at all. :)
these shoes are fashionable and wear what u love u will shine in the end.

I have just ordered yellow pair online, keeping my fingers crossed …and hoping they fit me well and look good too. I just bought them to experiment with a different look. My dressing style is very feminine so i got to probably wear these boots with denim shorts or cute floral short dresses….i am excited!

Living in Scotland…and as it currently winter I adore my Doc Martens…
I wear a wide variety of styles – usually floaty and ridiculusly girly in summer/autumn and a more rockish in winter
I bought them about a month ago and can hate being a part from them, comfy – after a week or so of pain haha – and cosy :D x

Im 42 and I’ve just brought a pair of Shiny black boots. I LOVE Docs. I had a pair 20 years ago and they were awesome. Never too old.
To all those people that say they don’t like them… Have you EVER tried them on?.
They are the most comfortable shoes ever …and make them suit your style of dress .

Rach23- I remember the smartie ones. They were one of the first ‘designer’ ones’ I haven’t seen them for many years.
Apparently they are bringing out kids ones (like baby/toddler)

Just recently bought a brown canvas pair with floral print. They were calling my name, and they are the most comfortable shoe I have EVER worn. I could be a bit biased in my opinion though, considering I was a 90s kid.

I bought a pair of Doc Martens at a local Thrift Store for around 15 dollars. I am in love and I’ve bought three more pairs since. My style is very girly, feminine, and just slightly edgy. These shoes fit perfectly in my style. They are quite pricey, but do really last a lifetime, as my thrift store Docs are from the late 80’s and have absolutely no visible wear on the soles. There is wear on the upper leather, I did have to stretch them to fit me, they were a size small, but now they fit perfectly and are an absolute must for my everyday life. Warning to you, wear your Docs with jeans or very thick leggings with a nice top. Never wear a graphic tee or graphic sweatshirt, such as items that say the brand(aeropostale, Hollister).

They can’t go “out of style”. They’re a classic British shoe and I feel as though they’re part of my personal identity (Industrial/neofolk). I had over 20 pairs throughout the years from secondary school, onward. In secondary school, I wore these gorgeous little black wingtip oxford DMs with my school uniforms and not a fuss from the teachers. I wish I could still find a pair of those gorgeous little oxfords to match my tartan maxi-skirts properly, but now I only see those awful looking, clunky wingtips that are imported from foreign countries and not the UK!! They look quite foolish! Any help finding a UK pair of wingtips would be much appreciated.
