Announcing: The Closet Makeovers Series

When deciding what to write about for my next blog here on CF, I decided to cut right to the chase and address two things I get asked most about fashion: How do I organize my closet and what is my personal style?
Ergo, I am going to mesh the two into an article series that will continue for several weeks: A Closet Makeovers series!
These posts will be split into 3 parts and will continue throughout the month of September. Here’s a look at what to expect.
The 3 Parts of the Series:
1. When it’s time to give things to Goodwill and what’s worth keeping: I am the farthest thing from a pack rat and know from experience that the best way to hone in on personal style is to donate the things that you no longer wear. Not to mention that it opens up your closet, and if you have a tiny hole in the wall that you share with another girl like I do, a little extra room is a beautiful thing.
There are a few rules to keep in mind when going through your closet, and I am here to hold your hand, say it’s ok to let go of the dress that you were wearing when your first boyfriend asked you out in the 9th grade. Make up is no different. It has an expiration date.
2. How to organize clothes, bags, accessories, shoes, and everything in between: As I stated earlier, space is limited in college. You want to be able to find everything without skipping a beat. I’ll tell you what is worth hanging up, what should be folded, a genius way for storing t-shirts, and how to keep all of your accessories accessible. This includes pony tail holders and bobby pins, because I lose those more than anything else.
3. Defining personal style 101: I will outline as many styles as I can possibly think of, but in order for me to cover as many as I can, I’m going to need you to tell me yours! When you tell me you’re style I will then compile a shopping list.
How will I highlight each personal style, you ask? I will go each one at a time, and address the following issues for each:
- The basics worth spending a little extra on for, but that will last you a lifetime for that particular style.
- Some tops, dresses, bottoms, and makeup worth taking a look at
- The accessories that enhance style and show off personality. That includes loads and loads of shoes!!
- The trends that are worth trying that fit in with your personal style.
The best way to think about defining your style is to compare it to a food pyramid. Your basics are your grains, tops are like veggies, bottoms are like fruits, make up is the protein and accessories are like dairy. Trends are like sugar. Wonderful and delicious but let’s not go overboard here, just like you pick one or two desserts per day, pick one or 2 trends for an outfit.
Suggest a Style for Me to Cover!
Here’s my promise to you:
I am a true believer in one thing: people are different. People have different likes and dislikes, especially when it comes to style. In order for me to create the best possible shopping list for as many readers as I possibly can, I need you to speak up! For every style that you tell me about, I will have a blog post dedicated to it. If I get three, well, then I will only do three. If I get tons, well I may be doing this until December.
What are your thoughts?
In order for this to work I need you to tell me! Is this column worth continuing? What is your personal style?

I love this idea! I never thought about clothes as a food pyramid, very creative! My personal style is hard to define. :-/ It depends on my mood. Some days I dress girly in pink and skirts, then other days I dress edgy with leather and studs. I think it’s great having an open mind and not defining yourself to one particular style, although I do love to have that ’signature’ look. Can’t wait for the posts!

My style…when I don’t know what to wear, my default is always something elegant, feminine, and classic. However, what i LIKE is something a little edgier and rougher. I LOVE studs and black is a huge staple for me. Vests are very cute and I love boots and leggings with tunics. Jeans-i wear all the time but i LOVE dresses. it’s hard for me to figure out what kind of dress to buy, though. I always want to buy a plain, basic-colored dress so that I can wear it often and make it look different for different outfits, but I always end up buying detailed ones. I don’t know which is better.
Kyrstin
i love this idea! my personal style is very put together and chic ala blair waldorf. however, my dream style would be something a bit more high fashion, like the girls at lookbook.nu. i’d love it if you could do something on the lookbook sort of style!
Paula ♥
This is an awesome idea! I’m actually hoping I can find a “personal style” by reading the articles, because I definitely don’t have one defined.
Sarah
well i think my style is very trendy. i always keep up with the latest trends and i always wear denim . i think its a little boho chic. i like my bangles, big sunglasses, balenciaga look alike bag, skinny jeans, etc but its not over the top.
Katie
Sounds like a great idea! My style is very laid back kind of on the preppy side, i normally wear skinny jeans a loose blouse and converse or ballet flats.
Ellie
Like the post :D
I would say my style is pretty indie, a little Kate moss and Alexa Chung, and if i’m having a rough day then Herion Chic haha.
I love mens baggy check and denim shirts, boy friend blazers, oversized and chunky cardigans as well as bowler hats and berets! Oh and I do love my huge geeky glasses! I’m British and I would consider it a typical London look, haha.
I’m open minded about my style though :)
B.
Hi, I’m excited for this.
My style is… random. Sometimes I feel edgy (like my dark grey nail polish today!) and sometimes I just need to dress head to toe in pink.
It’s whatever I’m really feeling, but I guess it would often go under “preppy”

My style is sort of a mix between modern and wild-child. I’m really into pencil skirts, flowy romantic shirts, relaxed knee high boots, braided headbands, block colored dresses, and bold accessories. I love the whole dolman sleeve trend. I’m the kind of girl who wears a loose fitting tunic and form fitting pants. …I’d love to see something on this sort of style. :)
Lina
This is some fantastic idea! I hope you do one where it’s a mix of edgy rock with girly. Something like Anne Hathaway in “Devil Wears Prada”. It was very dark edgy but pretty girly too.
Vivi
If I have to define my style, I would say it is trendy! I don’t just stick to one style like Boho chic or classy elegant. I wear pieces that are in while combining them with pieces I think of to get a more me and original look. Lately though I’ve been going for the careless look, like the I don’t care with the tousseled hair look. My most prized clothing posession right now are my cow boy boots and my dark skinny denim!!
Maxine
Omg! I just read InStyle-Makeover and there was an article on makeovering your closet! I’m an organizing maniac! My mantra is “if you take too long decided whether to keep it or donate it – DONATE IT!” I have some ideas on how to tackle organizing the simple way. But I organize my clothes by color and type. Maybe that’s because of several years working at a retail store.
I would like to read about an everyday city girl. Someone who goes to school fashionable but laid-back, works in dress attire with a personal flare and goes out in something that says “look at me” (in a good way).
I can’t wait for more posts in the upcoming weeks!
Tam
Great Post!
I’ll get straight to the point. I love a tough and edgy look, but then again i like it to have something girly and sexy. Does it make any sense? Anyway that’s kind of it. Oh also, i like a classic and elegant look (you know..that timeless look). I’ve noticed what fall/winter trends i want to give a try, but those are a lot. I actually think everything looks great when i see other people pulling it off amazingly. I wasn’t that much into the uniform jacket trend kind of thing, but then i saw it on lookbook.nu and a friend of mine wearing so awesome that i’m giving it a consideration (even though it totally does not fit in my budget!).
Anyway, good luck and i think it’s awesome that you’re writing this blog!

Yes! This sounds like a most excellent idea! I would say my personal style is…well…. boring. :(
Ally
I feel my style is somewhat on the exaggerated side if that makes sense? Haha. I feel that while I do keep up with the latest trends, I keep my clothes a bit more understated and the accessories I choose usually scream for attention on their own.
I’d obsessed with Tarina Tarantino pieces, and my favorite thing to rock at the moment are those giant heart earrings from her Barbie collection. I love rhinestones, giant pearls, studs, anything. I like to think of myself more as a risk taker in some respects – I hate looking like everyone else. Can’t wait for these articles, that sound fab :)
Kate
Nice idea. My situation is a bit different – I’m in law school, so I’m finished with the undergrad thing. I feel it’s different because now I’m to the point where I feel like it’s a tad inappropriate to wear sweats to class, but I’m nowhere near the point to wearing heels and business casual. I feel like, if anything, this is my chance to transition into professional chic (but I’m only an L1, so I have three years to do said transition).
I pretty much have been living in jeans since school started three weeks ago, which is fine I guess, but I have only two or three that I feel ok enough to wear to school.
So I guess what I’m looking for here is an opportunity to start looking a bit more put together, but with my own style (which I would say is an attempt to be rocker girly, but I’m not all that successful). I enjoy girly looks as well as a black leather, hardware, and skinny jeans.
hmm.. I bet this comment seems a bit schizo…. hopefully you get what I’m saying!
Natalie
I would call my style rather preppy and classy. You usually find me dressing in skinny leg jeans, boyfriend blazers, plaid blouses, and knee-length skirts with leggings. But at times, I go for a more rugged look like bleached/destroyed jeans, a leather vest, boots. One thing that really falls out of place in my wardrobe is a Lucky Brand jeans floral jacket I have. It is so incredibly filled with colors and I would classify it as Indie too. So I guess that there is a sort of Indie side of me too.
In conclusion: mostly preppy and classy, but sometimes rugged and indie.
Erin
I am in LOVE with your post! Very creative, inspiring, and unique! I can’t wait to see some of the looks that you come up with, I will definitely be following your Closet Makeover posts! When it comes to style, I would describe myself as edgy with light feminine whimsical touches. I’ve been a ballerina since I was three years old, and am continuously inspired by pastels, tulle, grosgrain ribbons, and subtle ’sparkly touches’, which usually comes in the form of jewelry-whether we’re talking pearls or diamonds. However, I have always had this rebellious ‘ROCKSTAR’ side to me as well, and I love the juxtaposition of blending extreme opposites when it comes to creating a look, which I feel really allows myself to appreciate fashion as a work of art. Overall, being a college student and otherwise, I stick to my three C’s–Comfort, Class, Chic. If I am deciding between new clothes to add on to my wardrobe, they MUST follow my three C’s, otherwise, I have learned from experience that I won’t get my money’s worth out of them. Therefore my palette includes cool winter colors that match my pale skin, raven black hair, and green eyes including: pastel ballet pink, whites, creams, black, all shades of grey, all shades of purple, light sandy tan or linen, french blue, royal navy, indigo denim, and emerald green. As far as the cut of a clothing piece goes, I lean towards flowy jersey fabrics, empire babydolls, off-the-shoulder sweaters, v-neck t-shirts, skinny leg jeans, wrap dresses, and banded pencil mini skirts. Fabric-wise, I believe investing in quality fabrics such as cashmere, silk, pima cotton, japanese denim, wool, etc. Trends I’m loving this season are: fingerless faux-leather gloves (I’m Vegan), over-the knee wedge boots (Camilla Skovgaard’s are too DIE for!), denim black leggings (i.e. True Religion/Hudson jeans), and 80’s inspired off-the-shoulder sweaters. And, lastly, before I forget–we’ve got to talk shoes! Every girl’s a little bit of an addict, and I love everything from leopard printed ballet flats to six inch stilettos (once you’ve been through pointe shoes, I sware you can survive anything!) to Frye’s motorcycle boots.
Thanks so much again for posting such a wonderful blog, can’t wait to see more! Good luck to everyone who’s finding or developing their personal style.

I can’t wait to read your series. I love heirloom/victorian/whimsical looks but at the same time I want to wear jeans with everything. I’m trying to weed out the things in my closet that I know I won’t wear but its a slow going process.
Jess
Great idea. My closet needs a little update hehe
My personal style is a mix of Rocker-Chic with a simple touch. I love the color black and high boots and gladiator sandals. I love following Kate Moss’ style and also Hilary Duff’s style when I want to look Chic and simple.
When I want to be more Rocker I try to add different rocker inspired items.
Even when I dress simple I love to stand out, you know get people talking, good or bad, so I will try every trend at least once.(If I know for sure I can “try” to rock it)
Brooke
As far as style goes, I’m interesting in reading about styles from different coasts. I’m from Arizona, and when I to college in NorCal last year, I was really surprised (in a good way) to see the different ways people wore their clothes. I think it would be cool to see a blog on East coast style, SoCal, NorCal, Arizona, etc.
Thx!
S
Can you do a post about boho chic style? Mine is more elegant/feminine, but I love the boho look more =).
Great idea for a series by the way!
Lauren
Unfortunately, what I WANT to wear and what I end up wearing are often two different things. So what I’d like to see are some ideas of pieces to buy that will help me shop/dress more like I would like to. I love the sort of whimsical/vintage style, like Zooey Deschanel, and anything where you would think “I Love Lucy.” But not so over-the-top vintage that you look like you think it’s Halloween, you know what I mean? I also like Western-inspired pieces – cowboy boots, Western plaid shirts with pearl buttons – again, in a tasteful, non costume-y way. Which so far is proving harder for me to do than I thought it would be! Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!
Toni
Great idea!
I’d have to say my style is semi-exotic – I try to incorporate at least one item into my outfit that is either imported from or inspired by another culture (without going overboard of course – the rest of my outfit is usually pretty close to the modern American look, and I like to think I match them to go together well ;) ). Examples: I have a pretty embroidered bag from Thailand, a South American-inspired knit hat for when it’s cold, etc.. I try to find inspiration for my outfits from other cultures.
Can’t wait for the series!
Julie
i feel like I don’t have one specific shy. Sometimes I do classic feminine romantic like cardigans, dresses and lace and other times i’m more rocker with dark skinny’s and an acid wash tee and then there are days i’m boho-ed out.
I’d love to hear more about any of the styles :)
Alana @ The Good Girl Gone Blog
My closet was a wreck too- now it’s color coordinated :) You should try wardrobe tracker – it’s a great tool for keeping your closet organized. you can keep track of everything you have so you don’t buy duplicates!
Renn
My style is definitely indie/rocker-chic. I made up my mind about it about a month ago and I immediately started working on making that look work. But I still have a lot ahead of me and it would be really useful to know what that style includes. Thanks!
M
Love this post and am excited for the series. I’ve been planning to clean out my closet and organize it so this is right on time for me. :)
My personal style is mostly about comfort. I know Zephyr would like us to deviate from the jeans-sneakers uniform but that’s my go-to style, especially when I have class. I have been trying to mix it up with some flats and sandals, and I have a cute pair of boots that I’ll use when the weather gets colder, but I’m still highly dependent on my jeans, because they’re just so comfortable. On top, I’ve been putting in a bit more effort and wearing boho-chic tops – lots of florals, tunics, bright colors. But during the winter, I typically switch to cardigans and hoodies. I have a harder time finding something cute to wear on top in the winter and still stay warm (which you probably know is hard given you go to UW).
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Sarah
Excited! I’m such a clotheshorse. I worry I’ll want to wear something again. My style is indie-preppy-vintage–Blair Waldorf is my style icon. I love lace, headbands, scarves and tights.
I’m psyched about this. I agree that hints for warm weather would be rad as well.
Priscilla
My style is indie too, i guess.. ( : I often wear dark colors like black and grey with touches of brighter colors like pink, aqua, yellow… idk. I like loose tops, blazers, skinny jeans, flats and sometimes stilettos. I love big bags and big sunglasses. I’d like to see different ways to wear black without looking too “dark”. Thanks.

My style is preppy/classic. I love polos, button up shirts and khakis but also skirts and dresses. I like to dress up jeans and a t-shirt with a blazer or cardigan and spiffy flats. I’m not a trendy dresser at all, but I always look pulled together.
Alicia
I would love for you to cover a style similar to mine. I am a 3rd year college student in a 5 year program that requires 6 month rotations of work experience, so I am professional clothing for the fall and winter. However I like how I dress at basic laidback simple professional, with accessories including shoes, bracelets, headbands, pins. I love classics like a black trench coat just below hip length, that I am currently looking for if you have suggestions, or brown dress pants with bright flats, a modern simple white button down, and a warm scarm to match. Also in winter coats I love peacoats and standup collar wool winter coats. I also tend to add edgy accents to my purses shoes and jewlery. I would love to see something simpler my style so that I can develop my style to have a multi functional peices for work and casual time.
Kate
I would say that my style is feminine hipster. I have a bob with bangs, dark rimed glasses and love to emphasize my waist or legs. I usually wear skinny jeans or a skirt with opaque tights with a tshirt but add something girly, like a flower print or headband to make it less monotone. Do you have any suggestions on how I can switch it up but by still staying true to my style? Thanks! and great idea!
georgette
My style is sort of a sort of traditional preppy/ivy league look, with vintage riding boots, cardigans, oxfords, blazers, lots of scarves. I try to stick to a particular palette with more dark, rich colors and neutrals (navy, hunter green, grey, burgundy, white, brown) because everything is easy to coordinate that way.
Hannah
My style is romantic, with lots of lace, pearls and high heels. I don’t like to look too girly, though, so I muss up my hair, wear dark nail polish, or trendy accessories. I spend my money mostly on jeans and basics, then spice things up with cheaper, but still pretty, shirts and jewelery. I also love love love dresses.
Do you have any ideas how I can make my money go the farthest and still look feminine/rocker? Thanks!
georgina
the style that i would like to accomplish when i get dress would be some mix of bohemian/comfortable mix.

Hello! My style is very girly and bright with very few dark colours. I wear black but only with things, never by itself. My style is also very artist-ish but simplistic, big floppy cardigans with graphic tees, that sort of thing. I’d like to learn how to wear a good beret/ hats in general :D I’d really like it if you’d help me find my basics, whilst still not costing a fortune. Thankyou!!!

Sorry! Forgot something. Relating to my previous post, I’d like it if you’d take into account the fact that I am a redhead, so some things just don’t work for me. Also, my style is very very cutesy too. Cutesy, artsy, girly but simple. Thats me. Thanks!

I’m with Paula, I’m hoping to define my personal style.
I’m going to give you as much info as I can think of in the hopes that you’ll take a personal interest :)
I’m 28, have recently left the workforce and returned to college and could be going to school for the next 6 years if all goes according to plan so my workwear isn’t going to suit my lifestyle, but I don’t want to dress like an 18 year old. I’m pear-shaped (no skinny jeans for me) and like classic looks with a little artistic edge/twist to them. I love accessories but feel very unsure if I try to have more than a couple accessories going at one time. I definitely know pieces that I like, but when I try to create outfits I have a lot of trouble. I like (but am not sure how to incorporate into my style) hipster, indie, vintage. Also, I’m up in Canada so need help with things to wear in the cold, cold classrooms without wearing a hoody everyday. HELP!!!
Melissa
My style is sorta hipster meets vintage meets gothic. Like everyone else, I definately rely on jeans and t-shirts too much, but I hope I can find new ways to show my style.
Ashlee
If you could do one on a style that’s vintage-y/(very classical)goth/romantic-y/girly, that would be fabulous…because it sounds pretty impossible, which has made shopping even more difficult for me!
Deanna
Like Melissa, mine is also vintage meets gothic! I’m like a darker, more classic version of Blair Waldorf.
So I have a TON of hairbands and earrings – very difficult to organize when I don’t feel like spending $30 on like an earring stand, not to mention untangling all my hairbands! Scarves are tricky too – and I have a lot, studying up in Chicago. Been trying to come with something ingenious for organizing these! I also wear a lot of tights, I love boots, lovee vintage accessories/bows. Things get messy with accessories and a small dorm room to keep it all organized in.
The main challenge is usually trying to keep my clothes organized in a tiny, packed space that doesn’t really allow for digging around. Very difficult since I like to mix and match to keep my style fresh! I basically have a dresser, limited shelf/counter space, and a tiny hanging area for a closet – help please (:
SarahBeth
I’m very preppy and girly in my personal style. Definitely your typical southern girl, but trying how to incorporate my style into a Montana way!
Katherine
i don’t know what to call my style. it is very mish mash. i don’t believe in a branded style. it captures creativity and orginality along with individuality. i just know what i like. i like my burgandy penny loafers and my 60’s pattern cotten dress. i love my many thrift store bangles and my wooden lunchbox style purse. i love my little black dresses and bright cardigans. i love my pewter strappy sandles and my floral stilletoes. i love my vintage store tunic and clear pastic “cinderella” shoes. i love my mascara and my nude lip gloss. i love my scarfs, ruffle shirts, and my grandmother’s unique ring. i love lacy panties and self tye-dye t-shirts. i love my peridot studs and my doggeared necklace with only one pearl. i know what i love and therefore i wear it.
Kimberly
My fashion is inspired by Lauren Conrad and Serena Van der Woodsen from GG. I like to dress up a plain white v-neck with dark skinny jeans, pumps, and long gold necklaces, and amulets. My style is to start with a base like maybe a black tshirt dress and pair it with black tights and brown leather booties.
Danielle
Great idea for this column!
After reading these comments I think many of us have similar styles. I like to refer to mine as “STREET SWEET”. I like a lot of tights/leggings with boots which tends to have a lot of street or urban style (nyc!). I also tend to wear feminine tops with these outfits. That for me includes a lot of bows and ruffles. My favorite accessory is definitely a great scarf! I’m also trying to incorporate more headbands into my wardrobe. I try to think of all this while shopping so that I don’t buy things that I will never wear. I am looking forward to reading more in this series! Thanks!
Jojo
I love this post, it’s great!
I don’t think I can really DEFINE my style … it changes daily! I guess I do wear a lot of ‘classic’ pieces with a ‘modern’ twist, but again … not always!
My typical outfit for school is dark denim skinny jeans, a dark v neck shirt, and some dark flats … I’ll also have some accessories, and always look put together. I guess that’s my style, if you got anything from that … cool!
I can’t wait for your posts, I’m sure I’ll be able to connect with many of them!
to
i like this post a lot! good idea.. MY style is very trendy fashion forward with a tough edge.
Iris
I’m not really sure how to define my style, other than I love dark, dramatic looks, yet I also like tasteful pops of color within pieces like dresses and weird patterns. Texture and cut of the fabric is very important to me, and I never buy anything that is too ordinary – even my basics are still interesting to look at! I also wear a lot of graphic tees. I do not use accessories at all, besides a bracelet and a necklace that I wear everyday.
For me, the most difficult part of my wardrobe is figuring out what gaps my wardrobe has, and how to fill it in, while developing/changing your style at the same time. I think I’m getting pretty good at figuring out what to do for my own closet, but it would be nice to see an indepth guide for what to actually buy after you cleaned your closet out.
Erikka
This sounds like a wonderful blog series! I would describe my style as trendy and kind of indie with some rocker edginess. I get most of my inspiration from street style blogs and sites like lookbook, the city streets, and of course CF.
Amy
I think that this is a great idea!
I guess my style would be a little indie, a little girly, a little retro, a little tomboyish and a little boho. It really depends on my mood. I love my skinny jeans, boots, ballet flats, Converse All-Stars, tights, tshirts, dresses, polka dots on anything…. jewelry (either costume jewlery or nicer pieces depending). It really depends on my mood that day!
Any suggestions on organizing hair things would be appreciated! I have tons of headbands, hair ties, bobby pins, barrettes, etc…
Ella
Awesome series! Can’t wait to read it all.
F
How to make a tomboy into…well a girl! But not too girly?
Dawn
Great idea for a series. I would define my style as retro-sexy with a twist of modern-androgynous.
Ruth
I’m looking forward to reading this blog series! I could do with some pointers to help my clear out my wardrobe…just when I was starting to make progress and be ruthless I decided I could keep a handful of things ‘for one more season’…
I’m not sure how to describe my style (especially since I’m in the UK so some definitions differ a bit), but here goes… I’m working in a student-related job so fairly casual is quite acceptable, I’m quite feminine though so I usually go with skirts + opaques, tops in classic shapes and colours (occasionally patterns), plain neutral cardigans and ballet flats. I have noticed I wear too much black so am working on building other neutrals into my wardrobe, but usually it’s never more than 50% black paired with something coloured. I also often use beaded necklaces or my staple range of opaques and ballet flats to add a pop of colour. My weekend style is pretty similar really (lucky for me!).
Holly
Hey i would describe my style as Preppy, but also with a fashionable edge, but i would really love how to know how i can work the preppy style with jeans and a winter wardrobe, i live in England so I mainly shop at Topshop H&M and Miss Selfridge.
Please help me find a preppy way to work the AW trends!
thank you :)
xx H
Meg
First off -I LOVE this blog :), okay now that that’s out of the way :) my personal style is retro-sexy (think mad men-joan) mixed with Blair Waldorf preppy. I will try any trend, color or style !
Lulu
Excellent idea! It’s been really interesting reading the comments, too.
The weekend Lulu: I would start by describing my style as Indie. Throw in some Preppy, Girlie, and Punk, and that’s me!
The weekday Lulu: I’m an auditor, which means lots of overtime, potentially walking around a lot, tons of client contact, and having to look as sharp as possible under the constraints of Business Casual. I typically go to accessories to personalize my look, but would love to read a discussion on how to bring some of my weekend style into my weekday workwear!
Also, how the heck do you store all your purses and handbags in a space-efficient manner, especially the ones that need to keep their shape??!
Really looking forward to reading this column, Meggy!
Ela
It’s a great idea to discuss different styles, I believe in diversity too :) . As for me, I prefer clothes that Audrey Hepburn or a young woman from the ’30s would have worn . I think this means a feminine style, not too girly not too provocative (scarves, flats, cardigans, etc.) . I’d appreciate a few new ideas so keep working on this. xo
anna
I think I am bohemian classic, in other words, I love other cultures and Asian inspired trends but I love to invest in classics, be that a LBD, pumps or the perfect coat.
Please do a post on that style too!
Taylor
My style is plain with a twist. I love a great pair of jeans(any cut), with a top and an awesome accessory like a cute bag, a necklace or interesting earrings. Most of the time, I’m in flats or boots, but sneakers and heels get mixed in once in a while. When I dress up, i tend to go kinda retro, like the 1950’s with the high waisted full skirts and shift dresses.
Reneé
Ofcourse this column worth continuing ! I’m sure lots of girls are having these problems so it will be truly helpful :)
My wardrobe is ok but still organizing is always good :) I can keep your advices in mind if my closet turns in to a wreck one day :)
Well, I can’t name my style actualy because of I’m a very changeable person. I like following some trends also I totally adore the old 60’s clothes..sometimes I like bohemian things and sometimes being simple and natural is the best for me.. so knowing other styles will be great maybe I’ll find my exact style or keep on mixing the new styles I’ll learn :)
Can’t wait to read al those! Good luck Meggy :) :)
Krisztina
I love this idea! I’m more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal, but there are times when I feel like leather and studs, or girly and pink, sometimes romantic, or bohemian chic.
Karla
I love your idea and hope you can publish my style. I love elegant clothes for work a lot of coach bags, nice shoes, blouses but for college I’m more into Hollister and Abercrombie outfits, the problem is I don’t know how to mix them and how to buy enough clothes that I can use for both styles!!! Thank you!!!
Meggy
Wow!
I don’t think you guys know how excited I am! I love hearing ab different styles because its so inspiring to my own wardrobe!
and in case your wondering, my style is cute and artsy and I love to play up my small frame. :-)
Peace and Love,

My style is a little different. I’m into the modern pinup/rockabilly kind of look…think retro meets modern, sort of like Dita Von Teese. Pencil skirts, capris, peep toe platforms, and a flower in my hair are some of my staples. I would be interested to see your take on my style.
Carolien
Hi there from a dedicated follower from The Netherlands :) I really LOVE this post! I hope you find the time to cover all the looks mentioned above :) If you can, I would love to see what you come up with for my style. I would describe it as ethnic boho chic. I love to travel and I want my style to reflect this. So, I always wear an item that I brought back home from my travels, eg. a lovely shell belt from Zanzibar or a gorgeous Maasai inspired necklace!
Love to see what your ideas are!
Love, Carolien

I LOVE this post! So awesome!
I’m always told I have a very specific style, but I don’t see it when I look at my clothes. I’d say my style is very close to Jessica Alba’s. It’s centered on lots of jeans (ranging from skinny, to straight leg, to boyfriend cut, to bootcut, to ripped) from light to dark washes. Then ALOT of cardigans, in different knits, colors and styles, but usually two styles (the long sleeve to the waist, and the long sleeve, longer version to upper-thigh) mainly in basic colors like navy, black, white and grey. Tons of tank tops in a variety of colors (to layer!) and a handful of statement tshirts that have something funky about them (silver splotches, green dots, grey leopard print, electric blue with black designs). A few basic sweaters in simple vneck styles, and then a few trendy pieces (batwing, stripes, etc). But I also tend to switch to comfy zip up hoodies in funky designs when I’m slumming it. Shoes make the outfit, so I’d love to see some fun shoe ideas (moccasins, metallic flats and colorful runners)! Anywho, basically something along the line of classic/preppy, with a hint of boho and hip-laid back style. Sorry for the rambling! Hope that helps. :D
Jennifer
I think this is such a good idea! My personal style goes between vintage and classic. I am obsessed with all the clothes on Gossip Girl because they all dress so well, but at the same time I dress a bit more girly than they do.

Hi! First i want to tell you, i really love your blog and i’m very happy that you will be doing this series. I’m sure it’s going to be great.
So now let’s come to my style. I think it’s a little bit pretty, but i always try to mix things so it’s not too… uhm boring maybe. It’s a little hard to tell since i’m from germany and i’m missing some words i’d need to describe my style in the right way. I’m all into looking for things that are not as common as for example clothes from “H&M”. I hate it to see people wearing the same things as i do, and i want at least one or two things (like my purse, or shoes, or coat) to be really eye-catching.
I hope you got an idea of how i chose my clothes and what defines my style. I’m very excited to see the results of the whole series.
Love, Svenja
Svenja
oh i meant preppy in the third line, im sorry
Sarah
I think I would define my style as classy in a denim and pearls sort of way with a touch of boho (flowy tops and skirts), so I would like to see you do a combination of those. Also I love the idea that you are gonig to give organizational ideas about t-shirts and purses, etc. I love my clothes, but it’s always so hard to accessorize when I can’t find my accessories in my tiny closet. I’m excited for your posts!!!
Inness
I’m really excited about this topic (both the closet organization and personal style). I’ve found that MyShape.com is really good at pinpointing personal style, and it has some fun titles for its personal style categories. (And then it finds clothes in your personal style that fit your body type–it’s awesome!) You might want to check it out.
Some suggestions for styles to cover:
-modern classic (uncomplicated, crisp, chic)
-romantic glam (enchanting, lush, luxe)
-retro
-artistic trendy (imaginative, expressive, inventive)
Thanks!
Dominique
I would say that I have two main styles, but they are very different. I tend to go for a very classy, romantic look. Sophisticated and sweet. A lot of dresses, a lot of pale colors. Flowers.
On the other hand, when I’m feeling super casual, I wear more of a boho chic look. Faded clothes, bangles, bright colors, and peace signs.
Very rarely do I venture out of those, and sometimes I even combine them!
Deanne
Those are some great ideas! I am constantly reorganizing my closet and would love some creative tips! As for my style, I would appreciate you including something classic, with a little bit of vintage. :)
Kali
I would say that my style is feminine, simple, and casual. I normally wear skinny jeans with a girly top and flats. Sometimes I feel my style is too plain and I’d like to know how to accessorize basic pieces to look more put together. I like to be a little edgy sometimes too. I’d like my style to be like Ashlee Simpson or Vanessa Hudgens.
thora
I don’t really have my style defined but I love girly stuff. Romantic ballet pink with black for example.I love paring dark and light colors. not really into colors that will pop out. Just light pink. grey, light blue, emerald green, black, purple..
I would love to start wearing hats, to be exact those cute romantic berrets if you know what I mean. Ballet flats and floating scarfs
. hope you will make something on this :D
Michelle
My style is basic, casual, comfortable, preppy, and feminine. I would love to hear some ideas about how to make my style a little less boring and a little more colorful and trendy! – while still looking clean and well put together.
Ahaja
I’m truly excited about your upcoming posts. I am always looking for ways to update my closet. Also, my style tends to be very edgy with hints of color and feminine touches kind of a cross between Jenny and Serena for Gossip Girl. I would like to see more ideas for my happy accidents that I frequently step upon. lol
Valeria
First of all: I LOVE YOU!! :D I really liked your idea.
My style is… nothing. I mean, I just grab some jeans and put on a t-shirt and that’s pretty much it.
I’d like to have that effortless look that Kate Moss can pull off. I really like it! But I don’t know how to do it, since I’m not skinny. Usually when I try that look, since I’m a little overweight, I look bigger and not cute at all. I hope you can help me! Thanks! :)
Emma
I love this column idea! Please do it!! Even though you can’t possibly cover every single personal style, since there are infinite varieties, most people will probably fit some combination of the “personal styles” that you cover.
It is so hard to define one’s own style, but I will try here. I love overdressing, classic elegance, feminine silhouettes, girly details, wearability, and French-inspired chic. I used to be a little more of a JCrew fanatic, but spending time abroad has opened my eyes to a more “international” look. Clothes that work in many different countries are great! And I ADORE the color black.
Look forward to the column!
Monique
I love the idea and can’t wait to see it!
I’ve all ready done an armageddon on my wardrobe before university. All the new stuff I’m buying, whether individual or trend setting, I’ve tried to infuse with my own “funky fresh” style to give it my own personal twist. Anything from small green heart stud earrings or my chunky bright orange necklace, or violet hoodie are like mini mememe statements 2 my outfit.
The best piece of advice 4 my wardrobe was what my spanish teacher said “you english dress so dull and grey like your weather”, so now, i show colour no fear!
I’ll be following the series 4 sure (y)

umm…I don’t really have a style. I can’t really say that I’m good at dressing/presenting myself. I had a better fashion sense back when I was a kid and my mom shopped for me. Sad, I know. I can see myself on that TLC makeover shows or one of those “omg she left the house wearing THAT” shows. Anyways, I really like your website. I’m picking up a lot of good tips. I’d like to see more casual/sporty wear (if that’s possible)…I’m not sure if that really falls under a category that people would want to wear but yeah. I tried. =)

At risk of being totally obnoxious, I’m going to add yet another comment to this extraordinarily long comments section. Sorry, Meggy :(
I haven’t yet developed a name for my style. My friend said I was a little “bipolar,” but I’d actually call it tripolar: unique vintage, colorful preppy/trend-light, and Audrey Hepburn classy. (Also a little Blair W.) I’m always girly, and I love to show my shape, which is a very petite hourglass. I tend to overdress slightly, and I like to stick out, but in a way that says “I’m more put together and on top of things and just a little more creative than you,” but not “I’m just plain crazier than you.” I can do effortless elegance, but I feel schlumpy very easily, and don’t incorporate many really casual elements. Shapeless is a no-go. And j’adore high heels. I also wear cool glasses – a very retro shaped cat-eye in a modern bronze finish. Oh, and I very rarely wear black, and NEVER as anything other than an accent color. My one true quirk – even with an Audrey fetish, no ldb’s for me! (I’m very pale and look like a ghost in them anyway, but I like something more bright and original anyway.)
I guess you’d say I’m going for classy vintage with a bright, slightly creative twist? I fall into graphic tees and skinny jeans a little too easily, so I try to mix in jackets and cool accessories, like long pearls or bangles. And always the heels. I want to try for modern classy lady…always incorporating one vintage piece, one classic, and one funky vintage or modern trendy piece. But I wouldn’t ever say edgy.
Oh, and more advice for petites!! You referenced your own small frame, Meggy, so I would love to see ideas about what you have found to suit and fit you.
And one more: at Inness, myShape.com is about the best thing ever, so thank you so much for suggesting it!
aleyson
my style is so normal, i’d like to be know how to dress up like they do on lookbook, but in a toned down way for going to class and everyday activities
Kae
I’m really curvy (a figure 8/hourglass shape), so my style takes that into account. I’d say my style is very indie/hipster/vintage. I am a sophomore at a (football obsessed) college, so I wear a lot of jeans. Skinny jeans are my current favorite. I love low-top Converse Chucks and flats.
I’d love your help because while I say that’s my style, what I usually wear is a very diluted version of what it could be. It needs a lot more work. I don’t really know how to accessorize, or how to put together less-casual outfits.
This is a really fantastic concept for articles. Great job!
Dani
SO excited for this series!!
I’m about to head off to my first year of college in a week ( AHHH ) so I’m right in that stage of self evaluation/closet makeover-ing. I realized that after I sorted out the clothes I no longer wear, I barely had anything left! When I go shopping it’s kind of hard not to just buy everything super trendy.. so some pointers for buying quality basics would be appreciated.
I haven’t yet figured out my personal style but hopefully your series will help with that. I love edgy/rocker chic and I’m afraid my wardrobe is progressively become too black… but when I buy lots of colorful tops I never end up wearing them :/
What I REALLY want to know are tips for organizing everything in a tiny dorm!! My room and closet at home are huge so I would loveee to know how to survive with no space!
Lena Michelle
my style is cute and sexy :) or at least that’s what im going for, haha.
i also love retro style! and Blair Waldorf is m fashion icon, i love every style she has! :)
Rizza
i think this is a great idea! i would love to see classic pieces that are affordable. with some great accessories too.
melissa
This is a wonderful idea!
Leia
okk so thanks so much for taking all of our ideas! i was going to check if anyone talked about my personal style but i have 5 minutes until gossip girl and 94 comments will not be read in that short time. soo my personal style is always changing, but i generally like a sort of rock and roll look. i love gray and black, but im not afraid of color either. chains, leather (although i feel weird about wearing that to high school), skinny jeans, sequins, cool hats (i adore slouchy berets), tights, short skirts, slouchy tops, gold & black are all major staples of my style. you rock zephyr!
Alyssa
Genius idea! : )
Scarlett
What a sweet & wondeful idea of yours :).
I’d describe my style as rocker chick (think Taylor Momsen) and rockabilly-vintage inspired (of course, icons like Dita von Teese & Bettie Page). My wardrobe is a little bit black-ish, and I’d be awfully pleased if you could help me get some colors in it without losing the “rocker” side of my style.
I can’t wait to see the results of your “makeover series”, very interesting project !
Leira
Super excited about these posts! As for my style, I’m sort of in transition. In high school it was very basic and casual, but I’m dressing it up a bit for college. Ballet flats are my new favorite! But I’m not good at looking cute in the cold yet since I just moved to a place that has actual winter.
Tatiana
My style is a lot like the Alexander Wang runway pictured above, very loose and slouchy but still put-together. I wear a lot of neutral colors though, white, nude, a lot of gray and black, with the occasional pop of color, like my red keds. I slide some cute things into my wardrobe too though, like the (fake)pearl bracelet I have on right now, or something with bows or lace. But mostly dark and loose in a sexy kind of way.
Hopefully this isn’t confusing…
K
This is such a great idea!! =] I’ve recently wanted to kind of re-do my wardrobe…but I haven’t really decided what to do with it yet!! My style is kind of girly, bohemian, and a bit vintage. Earrings are a big part of my accessories…I almost always wear really big ones!! I wear jeans WAY too much though! I really want to get help on what bottoms to wear besides jeans!! I’ve also recently been kind of into the Mary-Kate/Ashley Olsen grunge look and Kate Moss’ look. I know that these are a lot of different styles, but could you help me kind of mix it into one look….?? That would be REALLY great!!
C.Elizabeth
I love this idea i know my comment is a bit late but i just found your blog and i absolutely love it! :) My personal style is what i like to call modern vintage… its kind of a mix between Blair waldorf’s style on gossip girl and that of the 50’s and 60’s. I would love it if you covered something like this because it is often hard to come up with a casual everyday style for this look. :)
Shannon
Fantastic idea! I can’t wait for the series to start!

Fantasic idea! Can’t wait for the series to start!

my style: when in doubt, go SUBTLE. my staples are black and grey v neck sweaters, dark wash skinny jeans. my variations stem mostly from my shoes: cream slingbacks, flat caramel leather riding boots, 1″ slip ons. if i wear jewelry its usually simple CZ stuff. i’d like to work in a little more to the look, but without sacrifcing class! :) thanks!
Noel
My style is Boho Luxe (Bohemian Luxurious)
For the longest time I could never put a title on my own personal style. So when I first finally heard about this style I was so excited! It completely described me!
I’m definitely boho: Peasant blouses, tunics, earth tones and wooden jewelry, flowing skirts, ethnic prints.
Yet I’m also very glamourous, which tends to be a contradiction to all things bohemian. I love high heels and makeup, fur (Peta Please don’t kill me lol), gold, precious stones ect.
Influences: Gypsies, Hippies, The Middle East, India, Sienna Miller, Kate Moss

You know what would be fabulous?!
If you did a Victoria Beckham inspired style how-to, except if you could make it a bit more day-to-day, college-friendly!! I would absolutely LOVE you!

Think Betty (leblogdebetty.com) meets eclectic Corinne Bailey Rae and bumps in to classy-sleek Audrey Hepburn. Maybe even a tad bit of Herion Chic??
I love over-sized sweaters, high-waist skirts, scarves, boots, long earrings and valou-like rings. I am 5′7 and slightly overweight.
I’m extremely excited about the series already, so thanks in advance!!
Valeria
Oh, one more thing… PLEASE!! try not to put a lot of high heels. It’s not to wearable on college, in my opinion :(
I’m so excited about this series! :D I really look forward to it! :D

I can’t wait to read your Style 101 series because I feel like I have no style… or I have so many different styles that I wouldn’t even know what to call it, lol. I’m preppy/ boho-chic/ classic… like a weird mix of Serena meets Blair. I love the classic look of all black, and yet I love feeling unique by wearing a bold colour. Sometimes I’m tomboyish, but sometimes I’m super-girly… do you see what I mean? Lol.
ashley
I think this is a great series. Since summer is ending, I have the hardest time putting away the tank tops and flip flops.
I think my style is girly with an edge. My staple right now is my orange and purple snake skin bangle from Rue 21 and my black biker jacket from Wet Seal. Once my Betsey Johnson ring comes in, I think that will have an affect on my wardrobe as well :)
I wish I could broaden my clothes spectrum, though. I always find cute things but somehow it’s just never enough. I always end up saying I have nothing to wear by the end of the week.
I just need to get rid of my old Hollister tshirts and start my wardrobe fresh. I totally think this will help :)

From floordrobe to wardrobe would be AWESOME! I have many questions! How do you blend outdoor/camping/workout stuff with a Londoner’s mad style? How do you not have a schizophrenic wardrobe that makes sense? Since dating an American guy who is into all things active, I have had to make compromises to my Topshop brought up self! Do I just split the two completely? Is there a compromise? If he doesn’t ‘understand’ London style, does that mean I need to ditch it and get my kicks from a darkgrassgreen Mountain Hardwear Compressor jacket?! HELP!
Arielle
My style is very eclectic. One day it’s very romantic like a light pink cardigan layered over a white frilly top with bows and pearls as accessories.
The next day it’s bold and bright with loud prints and black skinnies.
It really just depends on my mood but most of my clothes tend to revolve around a “romantic look” with lace, frills, bows, pearls, etc. And I don’t know how to explain my other look but I love bright colors, bold prints such as polka dots and plaid, and funky jewelry.
