Fashion Recap: 2011 Golden Globes Red Carpet

As I’m sure most of you know, the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards were held last night, so of course we have tons of amazing fashion to discuss. Read on see some notable looks straight from the red carpet!

Top 5 Best-Dressed

Here are my picks for best dressed at last night’s event, in no particular order:

Olivia Wilde in Marchesa

Olivia Wilde 2011 Golden Globes

Olivia Wilde was one of the first celebs to hit the red carpet last night, but I was thinking about her glamorous dress all night long. This glittering Marchesa dress is the perfect mix of edgy and girly and Olivia absolutely rocked it. And you can’t see them in the photo, but she was wearing the most amazing gold studded Louboutins underneath. My only gripe is that I wish she did something else with her hair!

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang

Emerald green dresses were big on the Golden Globe red carpet this year, but the lovely Mila Kunis wore my favorite incarnation of the night. This one-shouldered Vera Wang has gorgeous draping and the train gave off just the right amount of drama.

Dianna Agron in J. Mendel

Dianna Agron 2011 Golden Globes

Dianna Agron looked flawless in this J. Mendel dress. She truly embodied Old Hollywood in everything from her soft curls to her gorgeous jewels to the body-skimming gown.

Amy Adams in Marchesa

Amy Adams 2011 Golden Globes

Amy Adams killed it in this navy blue frock last night. She looked elegant and put-together in Marchesa. Even though I’m usually not a fan of the type of updo she was wearing, I loved how it looked on Amy!

Anne Hathaway in Armani Privé

Anne Hathaway always looks amazing on the red carpet and last night was no exception. She stood out from the crowd in this fitted Armani Privé sequined gown with an open back and strong shoulders.

Other Notable Ensembles

Although we don’t have space to write paragraphs about every amazing red carpet look, here are some other dresses that had people buzzing:

Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf

January Jones in Versace

Eva Longoria in Zac Posen

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Love It or Hate It?

At every event, there’s always a few dress that people either love or hate — no in-betweens! These are two looks that I felt fit the criteria:

Emma Stone in Calvin Klein

Emma Stone’s look was a prime example of a “love it or hate it” look. While she went with a pretty, sleek Calvin Klein number, the peach color didn’t seem like the right choice for her coloring. Many people thought she looked washed-out, but she also made a few “best-dressed” lists. What do you think?

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta

Lea Michele 2011 Golden Globes

This is another dress that you were either captivated by or completely disliked. It’s no doubt that Lea Michele pulled off this look with confidence and grace, but are you a fan of her gown? Personally, I wasn’t feeling Lea’s dress, and honestly can’t figure out why I didn’t like it!

Least Favorite Looks

Julianne Moore in Lanvin

Julianne Moore 2011 Golden Globes

Julianne Moore had one of my least favorite looks of the night. I think this Lanvin dress is a gorgeous color, but the weird sleeve is too much — her pretty necklace gets lost behind it!

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Ramona Keveza

Jennifer Love Hewitt 2011 Golden Globes

Although I love her chic updo, I also wasn’t a fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s dress last night. I really don’t like that type of neckline and I feel like her small frame is drowning in fabric!

What do you think?

Did you watch the Golden Globes last night? Who wins your pick for best dressed? What were some of your least favorite looks? Do you agree with my picks? Make sure you leave a comment and let us know what you think!

    Anne Hathaway looked best!

I’m not a fan of Elizabeth Moss’ dress. It looks weird on her.

After seeing Natalie Portman in Black Swan, I’m convinced she could have done much better in the dress and makeup department. She’s so beautiful, I think she should have showed off her baby-bump a little more, and maybe with a nude lip.

Eva Longoria knocked it out of the park with that Zac Posen. Maybe Jennifer Love Hewitt should take some notes from Eva. Jennifer has great curves, and in recent years has been embracing them. I don’t think this fluffy, oyster shell-strapless dress was the best choice to show off her beautiful curves. Hair and makeup however, to die for.

Even though Emma Stone’s spray tan was a little orange next to that dress, at least she attempted to have a tan. I loved some of the white-ish dresses that stars were wearing, I think they are great for winter, but I’m having a hard time grasping the look of overly pale and under weight. I don’t totally get the idea of trying to look sickly.

Dianna Aragon looked amazing, but I found her look to be boring and safe. I don’t think she should be at the TOP of any best dressed list. Now January Jones? WOW. Definitely my favorite of the night. And Natalie Portman is pregnant and still managed to look incredible! I think they far out shined Dianna.

Also, I forgot to add that I thought Jennifer Love Hewitt’s dress would have been MUCH better in a different color. Can’t say the shape is the best for her, but the color definitely didn’t help the look. It wasn’t the right color for the dress or her.

    January 17th, 2011 at 10:04 am

I love Emma Stone, but I felt the dress was a little too plain, and the color and fit wasn’t very flattering on her.

I thought Leighton Meester looked beautiful last night; I’m surprised she isn’t making more best dressed lists! For example, Amy Adams and Dianna Agron both had fairly safe dresses, not much of a departure from either of their usual looks. But Leighton totally rocked it – she pulled out an unusual dress that suited her perfectly. I’d give Leighton the award, not Amy or Dianna.

My other favorites not on your list include Amber Riley (total bombshell!), Jayma Mays, and Carrie Underwood.

January Jones looked freakin gorgeous in that dress! Speechless..
Olivia Wilde also rocked it. I saw the Loubutins you were talking about and they’re to die for.

I agree with many of the other posters here- January Jones DEFINITELY deserved to be on the best dressed list. She KILLED it on the red carpet. Also, although Mila Kunis looks beautiful, I think she under accessorized.

    January 17th, 2011 at 10:31 am

I think it’s more Emma Stone’s hair color that washed her out then the dress, which didn’t look too bad. Anyone know why she went blonde? I miss her amazing red hair!

I think that it takes a lot of guts to wear a classic, androgynous Calvin Klein like Emma did. I would have liked it better in a different color, but I also appreciate the fashion risk that she took.

I love Amy Adams, but I kind of feel like we’ve seen her dress before on the red carpet (figuratively). And I would have liked Anne Hathaway’s dress more if it had been better-fitted–it kept bunching up around her waist, was loose around her shoulders, and she was standing awkwardly to make it sit right.

I also thought that Natalie Portman looked beautiful. She doesn’t seem to be one of those stars who picks tight dresses to draw attention to the fact that she’s pregnant, and I thought that the draping of her dress was beautiful (could have done with some other sort of detailing instead of the giant rose, but still thought that she was gorgeous).

    January 17th, 2011 at 10:39 am

Where is Catherine Zeta-Jones?! Her beautiful velvety green gown was my favorite of the night!

  13. 13
    January 17th, 2011 at 10:58 am

Amy Adams and January Jones both looked amazing, but my favorite looks of last night definitely go to Sofia Vergara and Jayma Mays – both looked stunning and totally stood out to me; despite Jayma not being on this list, I think she deserves to be, totally and completely.

  14. 14
    January 17th, 2011 at 11:51 am

January Jones definitely deserves to be crowned best dressed.
However, I still don’t know what to think of Emma Stone’s dress. I feel like it would have been better if she didn’t get a spray tan or if it was in white or cream.

  15. 15
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I LOVED Natalie Portman’s dress- it was AMAZING. I totally agree with you on Julianne Moore, too- what the hell was up with that sleeve? It looked very constricting. If the sleeve were cut off, it would’ve been a great dress.

  16. 16
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:07 pm

i liked natalie portman’s dress and olivia wilde. i think january jones looked good but the dress was a bit scandalous for the red carpet. where is angelina jolie on this list?! her dress was beautiful and simple but fit her perfectly and the color was amazing.

  17. 17
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:26 pm

I LOVED Mila Kunis’ dress! The green was absolutely perfect with her skin and hair. Emma Stone’s dress really flattered her complexion on my TV last night, but not so much in photos today. And I miss her red hair, too!

  18. 18
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Actually, I don’t think Julianne Moore’s necklace gets lost behind her dress – I think it’s PART of the dress. If you look closely, I think the sleeve material is looped through it, and that makes it poof up like that.

(That’s not to say that I like it. :P)

  19. 19
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:35 pm

I feel like Emma Stone looked washed out because of her hair. She should be any color but blonde!
I absolutely loved Mila Kunis. Especially that knot of fabric on her shoulder.
Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway were stunning, but I also do not like Lea Michele’s dress although I couldnt give you an exact reason. Maybe it’s the lumpy fabric on her right side…however I get the feeling that perhaps if someone else had worn the dress I could have liked it.

  20. 20
    January 17th, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Emma went blonde because she will be playing Gwen Stacy in the next Spider-Man. So yeah. I still think she looked gorgeous… Just a little tanned.

  21. 21
    January 17th, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Lots of beautiful dresses! Loved Anne’s look! Emma Stone too! And Mila Kunis. Lots of beautiful women! Didn’t like January’s dress. Too much of the good stuff if you ask me!

  22. 22
    January 17th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I agree with almost everything you stated besides Jennifer Love Hewit. I think she rocks that dress (and if you noticed she’s one of the only ones who SMILED on the red carpet – a smile really makes the outfit look better people.) I also don’t understand how you could not like her neckline but approve of some of the wonky cut-out dresses that make some of these women look like a jigsaw puzzle.

  23. 23
    January 17th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

My personal favorites are Dianna Agron and Emma Stone. The Glee evil cheerleader was the definition of perfection: the dress is stunning, the necklace makes her look like a queen and those curls are an unbelievably graceful frame for a such a naturally beautiful face. I really can’t find words other than “perfect” to describe her. On the other side I believe Emma Stone looked indicredibly chic: the dress suits her like a glove and its simplicity is elegant. I don’t agree with those who didn’t like the color: the fact that it’s not a bold color or the typical sequined red carpet dress (I can’t stand anymore!) doesn’t mean it’s boring.
I also liked Eva Longoria and I didn’t mind Lea Michele’s look even though the gown is a little exagerrated but please…Olivia Wilde? The Golden Globes are not prom and we have seen glitters so many times! It’s the first time I’m disappointed by Marchesa.

  24. 24
    January 17th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

i know why you didn’t like lea michelle’s dress, Ashley: she looks like she poured cotton candy all over herlsef! the dress was acttually very nice…but rather childish and princess-esque in a frumpy “im trying to be adorable” way!!!

  25. 25
    January 17th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

The dress that Emma Stone was wearing didn’t flatter her at all. The colour is great but when matching her hair and skin colour (which was an ugly orange) didn’t fit properly. It’s a shame because when she was brunette she was way gorgeous than now.

  26. 26
    January 17th, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I hate Jennifer Love Hewitt’s weirdo bun! And I agree, Emma Stone looks way too washed out. She looks SOOOO much more beautiful with red hair and red lipstick!

  27. 27
    January 17th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I loved a lot of the looks last night! Diana Agron was my favorite of those listed here but overall my favorite was Catherine Zeta Jones in that gorgeous emerald green dress.

  28. 28
    January 17th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

    wahhh…Olivia Wilde’s dress *_*

Elisabeth Moss’s dress reminds me of Charlize theron`s last year gown. also emma stone looked better as a redhead, but i like the dress.

  29. 29
    January 17th, 2011 at 3:57 pm

NOOO! Emma Stone was so pretty! WHY?! =[

  30. 30
    January 17th, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I thought Olivia Wilde’s hair was perfect. While wearing an extravagant gown, it’s usually best to go simple with hair.
Also, after all that she has been through this past year, I thought that Sandra Bullock looked great last night. Mostly in agreement with the rest of your picks, but I didn’t really care for Natalie Portman’s dress (I think it’s the flower?) and January’s dress looked a little too hairy for me :P

  31. 31
    January 17th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Suprised that you didn’t mention Leighton Meester, I thought she looks amazing! Although nude was big on the red carpet, she was elegant and didn’t look washed out like Emma, and accessorised PERFECTLY, as usual haha.
Totally agree with all the ones you picked for best dressed, but I like the way Olivia Wilde had her hair. I suppose it *would* look better if she trid something else, but I think it suits her look.

  32. 32
    January 17th, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I loved Emma and Lea’s dresses! I think it depends on the pic whether or not they look washed out. Bc on tv, I don’t think Emma did, but in this pic she does.

  33. 33
    January 17th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I would like January Jones’s look way more if the dress wasn’t made of weird hair… If it was a solid satin gown, it would have been beautiful.

  34. 34
    January 17th, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Does anyone else think that Emma Stone looks like Jaime Pressly with blonde hair??

  35. 35
    January 17th, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Ugh. I can’t BELIEVE that everyone in the fashion world seems to just LOVE Anne Hathaway’s dress!!! I think she is a beautiful girl and I like her movies, but come on, shoulder pads?! I thought it was a majorly ugly dress and I vehemently disagree with anyone putting it in their best dressed lists. Ew.

  36. 36
    January 17th, 2011 at 7:13 pm

I feel like Natalie Portman could’ve looked sooooo much prettier.
Awful dress, awful hair…. ugh :[ I could have CRIED.
Olivia Wilde stole the show with her gown though.
    SO GORGEOUS!!!!!

  37. 37
    January 17th, 2011 at 7:36 pm

By far my fav was mila Kunis the hair was beautiful her makeup was flawless love how she kept the jewelry simple with bangles and earrings. My other choice was Amy Adams love very haut couture. For Lea Michelle it was the first time she didn’t do a big poof dress

  38. 38
    January 17th, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Emma Stone looked amazing ! She was the best mixture of simplicity and chic :) And her hair and make up were flawless

Olivia Wilde was beautiful too !

  39. 39
    January 17th, 2011 at 9:00 pm

Olivia Wilde’s dress is gorgeous. I am seriously in love. I just wish she wore a fancier hair-do. I don’t like the laid-back hair with the fancy gown. It doesn’t fit.

I have a serious girl-crush on Mila Kunis. She is beautiful and sexy. She could wear a trash-bag and be sexy.

Dianna Argon’s dress is pretty, but its a little blah with her skin tone. Blends in too much. I wish she wore a warmer color.

I’m not a fan of Amy Adam’s dress. I love navy right now, but I don’t know… I’m just not loving it.

Anne Hathaway looks awesome! The dress is so different from most of the dresses. I am loving it.

I thought Natalie Portman’s dress was very appropriate for a pregnant woman. It was beautiful. I also love her makeup and hair.

Eva Longoria looked very Posh Spice.

Emma Stone looks blah, in my opinion. The dress is beautiful, but the color is all wrong for her and I’m not liking her makeup look. I love Lea Michelle’s dress. It gorgeous and her skin tone can handle the peachy color.

Julianne Moore’s is awful! The color was a little young for her, I think. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s looks way too wedding gown-like.

    Great post!!!!

    January 17th, 2011 at 11:56 pm

I completely agree with almost this whole post – except I don’t like Elisabeth Moss or Amy Adams’ dresses.

I like both Emma Stone & Lea Michele’s looks (although Emma would have looked better with her red hair!)

You should put a picture up of the back of Anne’s dress!

  41. 41
    January 18th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

LOVED Olivia’s dress. And Amanda, I miss Emma’s red hair too!

  42. 42
    January 18th, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Heads up: I’m soooo making Olivia’s dress as my prom dress; rhinestones and all! I kno I can pull it off! Wish me luck!

  43. 43
    January 18th, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I thought Emma Stone looked so beautiful

  44. 44
    January 19th, 2011 at 7:29 pm

I just did a post on this too! I agree with you on all of the favorites. I had a lot of them in my list of favorites too. As for notable ones, I didn’t like Natalie Portman’s dress. I’m not really sure why. I think she always looks stunning but I just didn’t like the dress at all. I had January Jones in my favorites list. I really liked her dress, but I thought it was a little too revealing on top. As for the love it or hate its, I loved Emma Stone’s dress. I actually thought the color looked great on her, especially with her blonde hair. I don’t think it washes her out at all. I don’t like Lea’s dress though. I think it’s just a whole lotta dress! Part of me thinks it’s pretty though.

  45. 45
    January 19th, 2011 at 7:32 pm

Oh and I forgot to comment on the least favorites! I hated Julianne Moore’s dress and put her on my worst dressed list too. I didn’t like the hot pink on her with her red hair. I also thought that the sleeve swallowed her up.

I really don’t like Jennifer’s dress either. It kind of looks like a bad wedding dress to me. It actually reminds me of what Jennifer Lopez wore last year, but is a worse version.

  46. 46
    January 21st, 2011 at 12:32 pm

I hate Lea Michelle’s dress. It’s swallowing her. But I was a huge fan of Julian Moore’s dress. I just don’t think that particular picture was very flattering.

  47. 47
    January 21st, 2011 at 9:51 pm

I feel like Julianne Moore has just been on this icy slope of bad fashion. Almost everything I’ve seen her wear has made me cringe. I don’t know what exactly she was thinking but it is kind of sad and I think she needs to hire a stylist, like NOW.
I wasn’t so into Olivia’s dress but I absolutely ADORED her SHOES!!!

  48. 48
    October 17th, 2011 at 2:09 am

i think Mila Kunis and Eva Longoria look very pretty… all the other ladies also look stunning but those 2 just looks the most breathtaking… must be their spanish blood (=
