Step away from the rack of overpriced, itchy, polyester costumes – you know you’ll never wear them again after Halloween! Instead, take the cash you’d usually drop on a cheaply made, mass-produced look and shop for a stylish costume that will make you stand out and that you can incorporate into your wardrobe post-pumpkin season.
Don’t think it can be done? Here are some chic and cheap Halloween costumes made with items you can actually wear again:
Retro Vixens: The Ladies of Mad Men
Flash back to the swinging ’60s with a retro Mad Men-inspired costume. Pick a side: “sweet” blonde homemaker Betty or “sexy” redhead Joan, the curvaceous office manager of ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. No matter which lady you chose to dress as, the good news is you can wear these cute dresses and versatile heels long after All Hallow’s Eve.
Spunky Heroine: Sookie Stackhouse
What better time than Halloween to dress like your favorite fangbanger? Sookie Stackhouse (from HBO’s True Blood) is a Southern Belle with spunk: she’s partial to floral sundresses, denim jackets, sneakers… and fang marks, of course.
Make it a twosome (or heck, a threesome) and have your boyfriend dress like Bill or Eric. Bonus points if you can mimic her feisty Louisiana drawl!
Music Maven: Katy Perry
This has been a big year for Katy Perry. Channel the chart-topping California girl in a bold blue wig, sparkly shorts, a shirt that salutes her smash hit, and some sweet treats.
Before you say, “How could I possibly wear anything Katy Perry-esque in the real world?,” hear me out: I went more PG-13 than she normally does by choosing a babydoll t-shirt that would be a comfy choice for lazy days on campus, and sequin shorts that would look totally chic (and eye-catching) for a night on the town with a basic black top, dark tights, and heels.
Fashion Legend: Anna Wintour
In a playful nod to the Devil Wears Prada, give legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour‘s stylish look a devilish twist this Halloween. An ensemble that’s fashionable but says “business” is a must, along with Anna’s signature bob and dark sunglasses. Of course, the Prada bag is optional!
