Baby and Johnny

Dirty Dancing is a classic, must-watch film that’s lauded for its steamy romance, stunning choreography, and ridiculously catchy soundtrack, but do you know what my favorite part is? Baby Houseman’s style.

Seriously, this film is set in 1963 (and was made in 1987), yet the outfits still look chic and on-trend today. Plus, who could forget that pink ballet dress Baby dons during the final dance number?

If you love Baby’s style as much as I do, scroll on down to see four outfits inspired by the fashion in Dirty Dancing.

Look #1 – Baby’s Pre-dancing Outfit

I carried a watermelon

Channel Baby’s pre-dancing style with this cute yet casual outfit. Start with a printed fit-and-flare dress; the bateau neckline on this one captures that early 1960s feel. An oversized cardigan dresses the look down, while lace-up flats add plenty of interest. Lastly, since Baby “carried a watermelon,” accessorize with these cute little stud earrings.

Look #2 – Baby’s Summer Outfit

Dirty Dancing fashion

When it comes to summer style, it doesn’t get any more classic than a pair of high-waisted denim shorts. Baby rocks her multiple times throughout the film, and I picked two of my favorite examples above.

For a more fitted, dancer-inspired style, rock your shorts with a coral-colored bodysuit, or try a printed blouse to create a breezy, laid-back vibe. Whichever top you choose, be sure to add a belt, a watch, and white sneakers. Add a swipe of lipstick, and you’re all set to shimmy up those stairs

Look #3 – Baby’s Practice Outfit

Dirty Dancing tulle skirt and tank top

How can you watch this movie and not want a tulle skirt? Mimic Baby’s practice outfit by pairing a girly, blush pink midi skirt with a boxy cropped tee.

This ensemble is pretty casual, so opt for comfy sandals in a trendy rose gold hue. As far as accessories go, I chose an adorable little necklace that features a couple of dancing.

Look #4 – Baby’s Final Dance Outfit

Dirty Dancing final dance

You knew it was coming: a look inspired by this iconic scene. For a look fit for having the time of your life, opt for a gorgeous pale pink frock that will make you stand out from the crowd.

Keep the dressy vibe going with silver shoes and modern-meets-classic pearl ear jackets. Stash the essentials in a lightweight wristlet, and you’ll be ready to dance the night away.

  1. I love this post!
Could you do one on Moulin Rouge and/or Chicago?
They’re my favourite musical films ever!
    Greetings!

  2. You completely missed the point of why the outfits are so timeless. Besides the first dress from Nordstroms, everything you have is cheap, and not at all the well to do, perfect for the Hamptons or LA vibe Baby’s outfits have. The sweater looks cheap and I don’t even know what to say to those faux leather looking shoes. The weird cheap white tennies from outfit two are even worse. Yuk. The cut off jeans are maybe the worst. Instead of the perfect vintage high rise Levi 501s you added some trashy mid rise obviously distressed ones from H&M? No. To get the look right you need the right brands. You need Keds and you really need Levis.
