How to find your celebrity fashion muse

Today I want to talk about fashion inspiration. Sometimes it can be difficult to come up with new outfits, and I often get asked about how you’re supposed keep up with it all. In an industry where everything changes every other day, how do you stay inspired without buying a whole new wardrobe weekly?

There’s a lot of creativity involved in fashion – even if it’s just in choosing how you wear the few basic pieces you have. Just like artists and writers look for inspiration to keep their creativity flowing, fashionistas need inspiration too!

There are many ways to find fashion inspiration (which I’ll be talking more about later), but one easy way is to have a celebrity fashion muse.

A celebrity fashion muse is someone you look to for fashion inspiration. You can check out what this celebrity wears, take notes on how they wear different items, what colors look good on them, etc. It’s a way to keep your style current, while you learn about fashion.

Taking fashion notes from a celebrity is also a good way to get a feel for how your body type may look in different types of clothing. Want to try a pair of high-waisted pants, but aren’t sure if they’ll look right? Let your celebrity fashion muse do it first, and observe their results before you buy a pair yourself.

Why celebrities? These days, they have really amazing stylists, and are basically walking fashion editorials going to Starbucks. And because these famous people pay a professional to dress them, and have access to all the latest designer clothes, observing them is a great way to find out about the newest trends & pieces before they hit stores.

How To Pick A Celebrity Fashion Muse

So how do you go about choosing a celeb to be your fashion inspiration of the moment? Here are some points to consider when you go about finding the perfect one.

  • Look for someone who looks like you. In terms of hair color, height, etc., look for someone that you think you resemble. Don’t expect to find a perfect clone of yourself in Hollywood, but find someone that you identify with.
  • Find a celeb with a similar body type. This isn’t a must, but really helps when it comes to figuring out what types of clothes will look best on you.
  • Look for a similar sense of personal style. Another bonus. If you can find a celeb who’s personal style resembles your own, that’s another great way to get inspiration and exposure to new pieces that you may like.

Here are some example celebrity fashion muses to get you started. These are just some examples of celebrities with large followings – if you hate them all, feel free to find your own!

Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad is really popular with college girls. Her style is very cute and mainstream. She sticks to a lot of basics, but always looks clean and put-together. Since she’s started her own fashion line, Lauren’s style has become a bit more experimental, and lately she’s been rocking lame’ leggings and ultra-high heels everywhere. You can bet that she’ll always be wearing the latest trends.

Jennifer Hudson

J-Hud is naturally gorgeous, dresses her body type so well, and obviously has a great eye for fashion. Did you see her in the SATC movie? Fabulous. Jennifer Hudson is a great example of a woman who makes fashion work for her – she’s not a slave to trends that won’t work on her body, and always dresses her curvy figure right.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria Parker is a great choice for a fashion muse if you’re petite, tan, and have a classy but sexy sense of style. Eva is always wearing cute dresses, tall high heels, designer sunglasses, and carrying an expensive bag. While you may not be able to buy her 300-dollar Gucci sunglasses, you can check out her style for ideas and buy a similar pair!

High-fashion and experimental, M.I.A.’s sense of personal style can only be described as eclectic. I love her look and give props to anyone who can pull her style off in real life. If you pick her as a fashion inspiration, expect her to always keep you guessing – who knows what this girl will be wearing tomorrow?

Jessica Simpson

Spunky & trendy with a hint of cowgirl: that’s Jessica Simpson’s style. Jess loves flared jeans with cowboy boots, high heels (she’s only 5’2″), and loves trendy pieces as well. If you are always wearing your denim and describe your style as casual but sexy, Jessica might be your perfect fashion icon.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham’s style is very trendy but also classic at the same time. You can always catch her wearing a designer label, and probably carrying a Birkin bag! Some of her outfits are a little questionable, and can lean toward tacky, but you have to hand it to her for always being willing to take a fashion risk!

Rachel Bilson

Rachel has such a cute style and always seems to look great and effortless. She’s also a bit of a style chameleon – dressing boho fabulous one day and effortlessly glamorous the next. Of course, most effortless looks in real life take many hours to put together… Either way, Rachel is an adorable choice for a fashion muse.

Nicole Richie

Boho chic with a high-fashion twist: that’s Ms. Richie in a nutshell. Nicole is usually wearing the latest runway trends, but she mixes them with vintage pieces to create a whole new look. I personally love Nicole’s style and count her as one of my biggest fashion inspirations.

Kate Moss

What fashion icon list would be complete without the ultimate style queen? If Kate wears it, you can bet that you’ll see it everywhere next week. I think that Kate Moss is probably even a style icon to the rich and famous! Nobody puts outfits together the way she does – her looks are always unique and fabulous.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

MK & A are also classic fashion muses for our generation. Fashionistas have been idolizing these tiny ladies for years now, and I’m sure that won’t change any time soon. It seems kind of cliche’ to talk about the Olsen’s fashion icon status, but if you love their style, they might be the perfect choice for you.

One Reminder:

A quick note of caution on this: When you look for inspiration in celebrity outfits, always add your own individual twist to their look. It’s no fun to copy someone’s outfit piece for piece: it’s like fashion plagiarism! Let celebrity outfits and styles inspire you, but don’t rip the picture out of the magazine and buy every single piece. Have the confidence to wear your own version of their look, and change it to suit you.

What do you think?

Now that you know all about celebrity fashion inspiration, I want to know: who is your celebrity fashion muse? Are there any famous girls whose styles inspire you? Let me know what you think by leaving a comment! Also, tell me if you think there’s anyone I forgot here.

Check back again soon for more sources of fashion inspiration – I’m going to be talking more about this in the weeks to come.

  1. I love Jeniffer Aniston and Blake Lively’s style..
They always look amazingly beautiful yet simple and comfortable.
    They’re a great inspiration!
And I also agree on Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan πŸ™‚
    Great article!

  2. Does anyone have a suggestion for me?!
I’m tall (5ft9), athletic figure and long blonde hair.
I love Vanessa Hudgens style, kind of boho and casual in the day but glam for going out, but she’s completely opposite from me in looks!
So if anyone has a suggestion for me that would be fab!
Love the blog, keep it up!
Would be good if you could do a style page on V.Hudgens.
(Have you guessed already that I love her style!?!?!!!!!)
    =) xoxo

  3. hii all

ThanXx ALoT 4 This aazing site
actually i’m from kuwait i think there are alot of girls in here follow the Hollywood style

    i love lindsay lohan
ashley tisdale her style is amazing she look very comfortable with her look i love that about her
i really love hilary duff make-up
vanessa hudgens also i love how she dress casual and i like that
i love the crazy look that Mischa Barton got ,
specially when she dressed for a night out…..

thanxx 4 this site again =D

  4. Nicole Richie and Rachel Bilson are definitely two of my favorites. I also really love Mischa Barton’s style. I can’t stand Sienna Miller’s though, and I don’t understand what all the fuss is about with her outfits. To me she looks like she went through her mom’s closet and put together the most random outfit of ugly pieces she could find. She is never put-together at all!

  5. Great article, yet again. I’m liking this website, even though I’m not in college quite yet. πŸ˜‰

Rachel Bilson is def. one of my fashion muses. πŸ˜›

To Stacy, the asian gal! I feel your pain, sorta. Hard to find asians in Hollywood. Specifically, I’m Filipino, and one of my other fashion muses in Vanessa Anne Hudgens. Even if you don’t like high school musical (I do, though :D), she really does wear some of the cutest things. And she’s part Filipina! The only other part Filipina I can think of is Cassie, but I don’t really know her style.

I’m kinda petite, but not exactly thiiiin. I’m a good size, though, because I play tennis and am moderately athletic. So V Hudgens and Rach Bilson are good muses for me πŸ™‚

  6. my fashion muse or inspiration has to be the amazing beyonce. my body is very curvy, im a slightly dark eventhough im asian and my race is malay, i dont have any european look or figure. but im blessed with my body and looks. some people said im hot, i think its the bootyliious and the big hair i got. some said i look very diva and elegant in every outfit i wore. so anyway, beyonce is a great woman and i love her fashion line, house of dereon. unfortunately, its not sold yet here in my country, and im a muslim, i cant wear something so exposal, so i kinda need your help to find me a proper outfit but resembles beyonce. she wore jeans and long shirt, right?

  7. mine are anne hathaway, emmy rossum (the girl from phantom of the opera), rachel bilson, and jessica alba. yes, i am brunette lol.

  8. None of them, I look in magazines and look at celebrities and the trouble they are getting into or they are having a nervous breakdown and they don’t inspire me and magzines, the shops they promote do not go up to my sizes so whats the point. The only inspration I get from magazines now a days is for make up and hair looks but I find inspriation comes from myself.

  9. Great article. My celebrity Fashion Muse is Fefe Dobson. She shares the same style as me and me and her are also kind of look alike. No none of those girls actually inspire me

  10. I like Nicole Richie, Selena Van Der Woodsen, MK and A Olsen and Taylor Momsen. The problem for me is i can’t find a celebrity that looks like me. I’m average height, curvy, pale skin and red hair.

  11. Emma Watson is my favorite. Her look, her body, and her style are all very similar to mine. I love both her casual and elegant combinations. I’d wear every piece she would buy.

  12. jessica alba. her style is effortless and comfortable, but chic. she’ll throw on a scarf or a hat and look so pulled together. plus, we have similar body types and coloring.

  13. Wow i love this article. Let’s see. My fashion muses are leighton meester (as herself not as blair), selena gomez, kristen stewart, amanda seyfield (we have a very similar body type), kristen dunst (people say i look like her), sienna miller, jessica stam, taylor momson (although she sometimes goes over the top), cory kennedy, emma watson, and rachel bilson. I’m tall and blond with an slightly curvy body type so i always check out blake lively, kate winslet, and america ferrera also. those three alway seem to dress for their body and feel comfortable in what they are wearing. i really get inspiration from everywhere though and i am always on the look out.

  14. Lindsay Lohan
    Mary-Kate Olsen
Nicole Richie (she’s too thin though!)
    Katie Holmes

But I’m looking for someone like me; someone petite, dark hair/blue eyes, fair skinned… and not too girly. Suggestions?

  15. Well my fashion muses would have to be Jessica Simpson. Her style is so trendy and she wears brands I can afford.I’m more of a Tee shirt, designer jeans, and a pair of heels kind of girl.LOL I get most of my clothes from this cool website called have the best designer jeans like True Reilgion, which is one of Jessica favorite brands, and the cutest tees to mix.If you love fashion like I do you should check it out.

  16. i definitely take from lauren conrads & rachel bilsons taste but my body type is more like hayden pannetierre although i’m 4 or so inches taller we have the same build so i check out what she wears as well.

  17. Really good article! I think that my celebrity fashion muse is Blake Lively although we don’t have the same hair color we have similar sense of personal style.

  18. wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww yall can really style rock on

  19. Being an hourglass and someone who is in love with the 1950’s, my main idol is Marilyn Monroe. Followed by Scarlet Johansson.

  20. I feel like a loser, because my celebrity fashion muses are old school, but I absolutely adore Diana Ross and Elizabeth Taylor. Fabulous and timeless.

  21. My celebrity fashion muses are Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Blake Lively, Kate Moss, Mary Kate and Ashley, Demi Lovato, and Ashlee Simpson.. so boho chic with an edge:)

  22. Emma Watson is my celebrity muse lol. But I do have to say I love Jessica Simpson for brining back some southern chic style, and since were the same height – 5’2 I love how being short doesn’t stop her from her style. :))! On the other hand i think that Eva, and Nicole’s sense of style is more me [ out of the people listed on here haha ]

  23. I really really really wish i could have a fashion muse which i could stick to but as some other girls up there, i’m asian too, so i cant actually find someone whose similar to me………. anyone for help?

  24. Yeah, same problem as a couple of girls above, since I’m Asian. I also don’t have a typical Asian figure, because I’m taller, rather full-chested for being an Asian, and have an athletic figure and broad shoulders. It’s pretty difficult to find looks that would complement me, but I like Blair Waldorf’s preppy look and Agyness Deyn.

  25. I can’t relate to many of the girls cause I’m Indian, and MIA is much wilder than I am. I really like Sonam Kapoor’s style, though i don’t really follow anything she wears.

  26. i am tall and have a pear shaped body. i have blonde hair and green eyes. i am not sure who i do resmble but am really keen to find out. i always make the mistake of buying clothes that dont suit my body shape just because it what my friends are whereing.
    any ideas??
i would love to create my own style that suits me πŸ™‚

  27. Brilliant article πŸ™‚
I love Blake Lively, Alexa Chung, Nicole Richie – all great, but I was wondering if anyone could think of someone who looks/sounds similar to me??

I’m about 5’7″, goldeny long hair, quite skinny/flat chested, brown eyes, olive-ish skin… any help!?

  28. Karl Lagerfeld est un gΓ©nie pour la maison Chanel et Fendi. As well as John Galliano for the house of DIOR.

  29. Even though she’s a fictitious character… Serena van der Woodsen, all the way. We have sort of the same build, except that she’s a bit taller, but the long blonde hair, thin frame… plus her sense of style is fabulous. It doesn’t even look like she’s trying, either!

  30. I think my favorite celebrity muse would have to be lauren conrad. I know she is a little vanilla in her styling but it seems classy and comfortable at the same time. I love the laid back Cali styles she wears and the simple hairstyles. The single french braid across her head was awesome. Love her. If you are looking for a muse of your own go to and they have tons of celebrity looks and they show you where to find the items at budget prices. I love to look like a celebrity but I am definately on a budget.

  31. I look like Amerie but more petite (small-boned and model-thin) and I’m tall, with small breasts. Can’t think of one fashionista that looks like me. I’m not looking for a celeb twin but even a little resemblance would be nice. I can’t pull off Rihanna, Beyonce, and Jennifer Hudson’s styles. πŸ™

  32. Emma Watson is definately my top fashion muse. She is always dressed classic and girly and yet, she is not afraid to take risks sometimes.

I also look up to Scarlett Johannson because she always dresses to her body type and it looks almost effortless.

  33. I would consider these girls my muses…

Blair Waldorf- I know, I know, she’s just a character but she has quite a following and note-worthy style. I wouldn’t say Leighton Meester even though she plays Blair just because their styles do differ. Blair (Leighton) and I don’t have the same body type or features really though. I’m 5’7 size 2-6 usually a 4 and golden-brown eyes and blonde hair. I also identify with Jenny Humphrey’s (Taylor Momsen) old style.

Heidi Klum- I really love her and her style. She works a lot of styles but keeps it consistent somehow. She always looks amazing on the red-carpet!

  34. i dont have a fashion muse!

i always try to find the right one for me but i never seem to be able to. ive tried miley cyrus and selena gomez. but they dont really match my style.

my style is kind of plain with one really out there piece. i go all over the place. one day girly, one day boho, one day rocker..

anyways. im brunette, tan and have greenish brown eyes. and huge boobs. that really narrows down what i can wear since my boobs always make me look humongous. im not petite either. im tall and skinny.

can some one help me find a fashion muse please????

  35. I absolutely love Vanessa Hudgens, personally. She has a unique, laid back sense of style with a boho flair. I love how she glams up her look with gorgeous accessories, too. I have black hair, chocolate brown eyes, olive skin and I’m petite, so she’s my muse for both fashion and beauty. =)

I also love Zooey Deschanel, because she has a beautiful indie look, and Selena Gomez, because she knows how to make jeans look glam. I’m a bit of a tomboy so Selena’s style really suits me, too.
Vanessa Abrams (from Gossip Girl) has an amazing wardrobe as well! She combines designer pieces with vintage accessories, giving her a great, funky look. I love it.

This article is so good! I hope you write one on Vanessa Hudgens.

  36. Im from Ireland but my fashion muses would definetely be Agyness Deyn & Alexa Chung from the UK…Theyre kind of the faces of Indie & London over here x

  37. Of your recommendations, my favorite is Jessica Simpson. However, I’m much taller than she is (5’7″!), have a bigger butt and thighs, and have shorter, slightly darker hair. Any suggestions?

  38. Rachel Bilson, Leighton Meester and Lauren Gottlieb of so You Think You Can Dance 3 fame are my fashion muses. Rachel’s boho/classic look with Leighton’s clean cut style mixed with Lauren’s sharpe edge = awesome.

  39. i’d say leighton meester, but i don’t know much about her own style. m fashion muse is her character Blair Waldorf, i just love how she’s always looking her best!
we have the same hair and her body is very similar to mine, only i’m a bit smaller and i have bigger boobs :p

  40. Wow, I’m surprised at all the Lohan requests. I didn’t realize she had such a following in the fashion world. I’ll definitely make sure to talk about her next!

Melia – I am with you on Zooey – she’s really cute and has nice indie vibe going.

Jada – You’re so right about Rihanna! She dresses really well and always looks high-fashion in a really wearable way.

Hannie – The Ting Ting’s rock! I’m just getting into their music lately – they are going to be the next big thing for sure πŸ™‚

  41. I love this article, my celebrity fashion muse is Lauren Conrad. I love her because like you said she wears lots of basic stuff but still looks fashionable and I love that about her. I also get inspirations from Eva Longoria because I work at Express and I need to have a style that compliments my store and the shoes that are in and Eva Longoria never seems to fail me on the shoe part. My other inspirations are of course Nicole Richie and Rachel Bilson everytime I feel a little boho. πŸ™‚
I used to love Mischa Barton, but anytime I need info on how to wear flats I use her as my inspiration since she knows how to rock flats. And I have to give you some kudos for what you said, “When you look for inspiration in celebrity outfits, always add your own individual twist to their look.” It is so true, and that is what I do. Great article!

  42. I love Rachel Bilson’s style. It’s very similar to my own. M.I.A. looks amazing, and definitely inspiring.

I have the same problem as Stacy – I’m Asian, and sadly, there are a lack of us in Hollywood. It’s very hard to find anyone with the same skin tone as I have, since I’m darker than most Asian celebrities (they’re all fair, fair, fair). So when it comes to finding someone who looks like me, I’m stuck. Oh well.

  43. well.. since i hav bootilicious body.. my fashion muse is Beyonce.. she bring ghetto glamour, high fashion & sex appeal.. btw im asian tho but thank god my skin is tan..
    for fashion inspiration..
i love love Nicole Richie style.. but these days i somtime accidently dress like lauren.. damn.. there nuttin wrong i wear cute dress & big sunnie.. lol.. i love Victoria Beckham’s style too.. especially her Birkin bag & Laboutin…so jealouss.. !!

  44. i resemble nelly furtado a little- skin color and jawline, so i like to have her as an inspiration for makeup.. as for my clothings- i like to mix and match, and I’m pretty small but very thin, so i still haven’t found my fashion muse yet!

From the list given above, i would probably opt for Rachel and Victoria Beckham, and also audrina patridge from the hills! πŸ˜€

  45. I love how lauren conrad, rachel bilson and leighton meester/blair waldorf dress. I like the girly and more simple style.

For makeup, I really like how Ashley Olsen has hers done. If you’re ever doing anything on makeup, can you maybe look into product or ways to get hers? I especially like how her eyes are done. I can’t find much online though.

  46. i second the lohan request!! πŸ™‚

does anyone have any suggestions for big bust, olive skin, brunette, not too skinny but not chunky??

  47. I really love Rachel Bilson’s style too, I like the fact that we both have the same skin tone, hair colour and eye colour, but I can’t pull off everything she wears because I’m taller and curvier than her. Bright colours might look good on you when you’re petite, but otherwise you’ll look awkward. πŸ™

My other favorite is Vanessa Hudgens, but the same here again, she’s so petite too. Kate Moss has awesome style, but she has a quite different colour palette to match. Then I like Alexis Bledel, Selena Gomez and Margharita Missoni. But it’s quite hard to get candids from Alexis and Margharita.

  48. I tend to look at Rachel Bilson for fashion inspiration, as like me she’s quite young, brunette, petite and fairly slim but also pear-shaped. I also like to look to Kristen Stewart, I admire her laid-back, casual look, though I can’t wear everything she does as she’s a lot skinnier and more athletic-looking than me. I’d really appreciate anyone who could suggest some young, brunette, petite pear-shaped women for me to look to?

  49. Lindsey Lohan is definitely one of my top celebrity style muses (especially in Georgia Rule). I love how she can look relaxed and glamorous in leggings. I also LOVE her dresses. I’m a huge dress person so I pull a lot of my style inspiration from her. As long as I don’t use her rehab stint as inspiration I think I’ll be fine!

  50. Thanks for making this site! i like it πŸ™‚ Here are my fashion muses:
-Alexis Bledel (we have the same basic coloring and body shape (except she has blue eyes, i have brown, and i’m considerably flatter chested.)
    -Katie Holmes
    -Kate Hudson

  51. hey tess-i think Alexis Bledel might be an interesting actress to look into–although you don’t see her much these days.

I love looking for inspiration among celebrities all around the globe.

I love your blog. keep it up! =]

  52. Rachel Bilson, Mk&A, & Nicole Richie are all great style muses for me. I’m super short so its inspiring to see fellow petite girls pull off maxi dresses & wide leg jeans. I love seeing the creative combinations they come up with.

  53. I would say for hair/makeup mine would be Halle Berry because her skin color and hair color are almost exact matches to mine and she always looks glowing and flawless…something I try to emulate! My clothing style is too all over the place to have one muse…I’d say Halle Berry again, Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller, and way too many others to name!

  54. i do have celebrity muses although i don’t go crazy looking or stalking them. i just pay attention to what they wear because i love their personal style…. come to think of it, i don’t actually really copy them at all, so i’m not sure if they are called muses!! πŸ™‚

one particular muse of mine is a japanese singer/actress that i adore both for her individuality and ability to carry of whatever she wants to wear. i feel sometimes i’m actually designing for both myself and her, and that really helps my designs.
