Do you struggle with transforming your outfits from day to night? Don’t worry, CF is here to help turn that daily annoyance into a fun challenge. This column will focus on one piece per week, and teach you how to take your look from study sessions in the library to dancing the night away.
What’s one piece that can instantly add a touch of classic glamor to your closet? The cigarette pant, of course. Popularized in the 1950s by many Hollywood stars, but immortalized by Audrey Hepburn in the ’60s, these skinny black pants are a necessity for any wannabe style icon.
Cigarette pants can go with absolutely everything, but they can also be a bit tricky to style at first because of their cropped length. Since they usually end above the ankle, college girls may be a little wary of incorporating them into their wardrobes. Never fear – with the proper styling, cigarette pants can make an average outfit look classy and refined.
This week, I’ll be showing you how to wear a pair of cigarette pants to class and for a night out, creating two super chic looks.
Cigarette Pants: Class
Pants, Shirt, Bag, Belt, Shoes, Ring
For class, pair your cigarette pants with a colorful plaid shirt for a twist on the classic plain oxford shirt. Mix neutrals by belting your shirt at the waist with a brown belt. You can also try wearing playful jewelry like this awesome bike-shaped ring from Modcloth to capture the youthful feel of the cigarette pant. Add more brown tones with a pair of girly brogue shoes and a classic two-toned bag to complete the look.
Cigarette Pants: Night Out
Pants, Top, Bag, Pumps, Bangles, Earrings
To modernize your look for night, wear a long, drapey top with a cool print (how awesome is this feather-inspired one from Dorothy Perkins?) to emphasize the length of the pants. Accessorize with black platform pumps and fun black bangles. Add a pop of color, like this gorgeous tangerine/coral hue, with a fringed cross-body bag and matching earrings.
What do you think?
Do you own a pair of cigarette pants? What do you wear with them? Be sure to leave me a comment and let me know what you think of the outfits, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I LOVE cigarette pants! To be honest, I’m not really a jeans kind of person. I like the feeling of dressing up on regular days and so sometimes I want to wear something that is both casual and polished. The cigarette pant fits that “criteria.”
Btw, love the choice of bags!
i love this post!! i was thinking about picking up a pair 🙂
they look so cute but I think they will look like to short pants on my 5.8 almost 5.9 frame love them though:)
So cute! I’ve actually never heard of these but now I want a pair! 🙂 Great post!!
nice outfits, but i think the top in the second one looks kinda old lady-ish .
I love the idea of cigarette pants, might have to go out and get some now! It would be nice to have a classy alternative to jeans.
I love the cigarette pants so much! They remind me of the 30’s and that was such a beautiful period for clothes. I think they are so unbelievable chic and sophisticated. After reading this post I will most certainly be going out and getting me a pair.
I love trousers like these, and own them in several colours. Here are my favourite ways to wear them:
1. with a v-neck t-shirt, a statement scarf and a blazer (but in a different colour than the trousers to keep the look casual)
2. with a loose-fitting scoop-neck top and wedges in a contrasting colour
3. with a colourful collared blouse tucked in. I put a metallic leather belt through the belt loops and finish with a long necklace and some kitten heels.
4. with my oversized fisherman’s jumper and ballet flats
If you don’t own a pair of these, you should! They are extremely versatile, and will be usable in a work environment. Don’t be afraid to buy them in unusual colours! I have a purple pair which I love. I recommend jcrew.co.uk and allsaints.co.uk
Cigarette pants are so classy! But where they cut off makes my legs look shorter than they already are 🙁 Great outfits though!
So THAT’S what those are called! I just called them cropped skinny jeans 🙂 I’ve never tried them because I am too hippy for skinny-anything, but on the right figure they are cute and polished.
I really like the class outfit! It’s casual enough to be comfortable but still looks put-together.
Get them, you’ll live in them!
I always have trouble with cropped ANYTHING, because I’m so tall. 3/4 sleeves make me look like I outgrew my sweater, cigarette pants make me look like I outgrew my pants. Which makes me very sad because they would definitely fit with what I like to wear!
