When I’m not writing articles for CF, I’m a DJ for my college radio station, which means (not to brag) I make a mean playlist.
I’ve put together a list of 13 songs for when you’re just having one of those days when you need to be reminded of how awesome you are. Some are old faves, others are huge hits, some have been forgotten, and a few are totally underappreciated. But all of them are all about girl power.
Plug in your headphones and get ready to dance. Here’s my ultimate girl power playlist:
1. “Single Ladies” – Beyoncé
I’m really not sure I need to explain this choice at all. Of course we’re going to start the playlist off with this one. Whether or not you are in fact a single lady, this song is an excuse to strut your stuff and dance like you’re as confident as Queen Bey.
2. “Really Don’t Care” – Demi Lovato ft. Cher Lloyd
Although this super-fun, bouncy song is about a guy, it can apply to any situation that you are so over – be it friend drama, stress about summer internships, or returning from spring break and being completely D-O-N-E with having so much homework. As you listen to this one, imagine yourself telling whatever’s giving you negative vibes that you couldn’t care less.
3. “Bulletproof” – La Roux
This time baby, you’ll be bulletproof. The message of this song will leave you ready to take on whatever challenge faces you next, be it a chem exam or speaking up about something that’s bothering you.
4. “Schieße” – Lady Gaga
The title of this lesser-known Gaga track is a German curse word, and it’s basically Mother Monster venting her frustrations at the patriarchy and everything that women have to put up with. While it sounds like a stiletto-pounding dance song, the message is all about how tough it can be to be a strong woman and stay true to yourself.
5. “Supergirl” – Saving Jane
The title says it all. This old fave is guaranteed to get stuck in your head and make you feel like, well, Supergirl.
6. “Raise Your Glass” – P!nk
This classic will take you back to high school dance parties. While it’s a song for empowering everyone, not just women, P!nk is the ultimate badass rocker chick. Her edgy and powerful vocals are sure to put you in a good mood.
7. “New Romantics” – Taylor Swift
Obviously, this playlist would be incomplete without some Taylor Swift. Those of you who snagged a deluxe edition hard copy of 1989 at Target have probably been playing this song on repeat for months, but for those of you who didn’t, the track is (finally) available on iTunes now.
(There’s no way to get it on YouTube, hence no video above – sorry!)
One of my favorite T-Swiz songs of all time, this track is packed with edgy lyrics (“‘Cause baby I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me”) and a great beat.
Taylor has sung about the amazing feeling of being with her gal pals before, but “New Romantics” is “22” all grown up. It’s the anthem for you and your group of girlfriends, who are all just trying to figure out love and life. To me, it captures the feeling of being a college girl navigating her social life and having fun while making mistakes.
8. “Oh No!” – Marina and the Diamonds
If you aren’t familiar with Marina and the Diamonds (a.k.a. Marina Diamandis), I suggest you check her out ASAP. It was hard for me to pick just one of her girl power-packed electro-pop tracks for this list.
Although “Oh No!” is about a self-obsessed girl who’s not exactly a role model, you’ll still be feeling empowered and pumping your fist when Marina choruses “I know exactly what I want and who I want to be.”
9. “This is My Time” – Raven-Symoné
I love a good throwback. I have unashamedly loved this song since I used to listen to it on my “That’s So Raven” soundtrack in my mom’s car. It may be a little cheesy, but it never ceases to make me happy. Also, ICYMI, Raven is still awesome.
10. “Closer” – Tegan and Sara
The lyrics of this upbeat single by the twin sister duo may be a little NSFW, but it’s so refreshing to hear a sexy song in which women are taking control and are the pursuers and not the pursued.
11. “So Yesterday” – Hilary Duff
I told you I liked throwbacks. Don’t pretend you don’t freak out a little every time you hear this song – if you’re like me and my friends, it’s been helping you move on from your troubles since sixth grade. Laugh it off, and let it go.
12. “Who Said” – Hannah Montana
Indulge me one more tweenybopper moment. Miley may now be dancing to a beat of a totally different, slightly crazy drum, but there’s no denying she was brilliant as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana.
For me, this is like great comfort food in music form. This blast from the past features lyrics that’ll have you feeling confident about your future.
13. “Firework” – Katy Perry
And we’ll finish off this playlist with a classic. “Firework” is one for the ages, and I dare you not to smile when you hear it. Sitting in the library feeling unmotivated? One rewatch of the killer music video will fix that.
What do you think?
