Hanna is quickly becoming my favorite character on Pretty Little Liars, and not just because of her killer (pardon the pun) style; the girl really has a heart of gold. She may be a Queen Bee, but in recent episodes, as she has faced enough troubles — family, friends, love, money, self-esteem — to make the average girl ditch the perfect curls and fall into a fashion rut. In addition, Hanna has shown a heartfelt and selfless side that Regina George never could… all while looking picture-perfect.
This post, the third in my series on Pretty Little Liars fashion, is all about how you can achieve Hanna’s trendy, feminine and glamorous style:
When we first met Hanna Marin, she was strutting down the hallways of Rosewood High like she owned the place… that is, when she wasn’t shoplifting from ritzy department stores. Not exactly the best start for the fab four’s sole blonde. But there’s more to Hanna’s story than just that of a poor little rich girl who rules the school.
Before Alison’s disappearance, Hanna was “Hefty Hanna,” an insecure and overweight outsider who longed to be the popular girl. Fast-forward to a year after Alison’s disappearance and Hanna has reinvented herself: She’s lost the extra weight, become besties with fellow outcast-turned-It-girl Mona, swapped sweats for designer duds and snagged the boyfriend of her dreams.
But, of course, nothing’s as perfect as it seems. Her parents’ divorce left a strain on her household, particularly in the financial department. While her mother begs for mortgage extensions and can barely afford to keep the fridge stocked, Hanna struggles to keep up the illusion of perfection she’s worked so hard to create. As she barters her designer bags for cash, forms a flirty bond with the school nerd and spends less time with her best friend Mona, Hanna begins to feel her It-girl status slipping away… The question is whether she still cares.
Each of the Pretty Little Liars has a unique style… Aria dresses edgy bohemian, Spencer’s the prep and Emily prefers a sporty look, but what about Hanna?
Her style is trickier to pinpoint because her ensembles are eclectic. She borrows elements of everyone’s wardrobe to create looks that are strikingly chic with a touch of trend, femininity and glamor. Hanna looks like she’s heading to a hip soiree everyday rather than just trekking to class. Her look is very young Hollywood: It’s flirty and girly with a trendy edge.
Here are some tips for getting Hanna’s eclectic aesthetic for yourself:

this girl is interesting. she has a chipmunk face and doesn’t look extremely pretty at first glance but on screen she’s just attractive and really catches your attention.

Is it just me or someone else find this girl’s “style” some sort of Serena van der Woodsen rip-off?
I have nothing against the show (haven’t watched yet, it hasn’t been aired in my country) but I get a Deja Vù everytime I see Hanna Marin on the web… it looks like a younger (and prettier) version of GG’s Serena

@Ella: I think Serena’s look is more bohemian. It is glamorous of course (she does live on the Upper East Side) but I don’t think she is as glitzy of colorful as Hanna. Plus Serena wears boots, jeans, and nudes a lot. At least that’s how I see it.

Another fantastic article! I have to say that in the books, Hanna is definitely my least favorite character, but I love how they portray her on television. She is so much more likable and fashionable and is slowly becoming one of my favorite PLL ladies. I LOVE the third outfit- it captures her personality perfectly. Keep up the good work!
As a longtime daily reader of this blog, I’d like to say; Not everyone knows who these characters/people are- and from the summary on Wikipedia, it doesn’t look like something worthwhile other than to oogle at clothes. (That’s what this website and girly magazines are for!) I feel out of the loop and I cannot be the only one. Why not put this effort towards profiles of people that everyone knows?

Ella – While there are similarities between Hanna and Serena’s styles, I think the two girls are very different. Hanna is more polished and modest, while Serena is a bit more bohemian and sexier. Serena almost always shows lots of cleavage and wears barely-there skirts or skin-tight dresses. Hanna dresses more age appropriately and modestly.
Aascot — If you’re unfamiliar with Pretty Little Liars, the third post in my series is not the best place to start : ) I explain the background of the show in the first post, Fashion Inspiration: Pretty Little Liars (http://www.collegefashion.net/inspiration/fashion-inspiration-pretty-little-liars/). It was actually a pretty big summer hit, so while you may not have heard of it or watched, there are definitely lots of fans out there (The first PLL post had 74 comments!). Fashion aside, it’s a really good show and I highly recommend it!
Plus, if you only read about things you already know of, you miss out on lots of great people and inspiration! It gets tired to read about the main fashion fixtures that everyone always talks about. As a writer, I think its more valuable to create content that hasn’t already been explored and introduce readers to new things.

I love this series and was waiting anxiously for you to do Hanna! I would also love to see an article on how to dress like Rachel Green from Friends. Even though the show is off the air, it is still one of the most popular comedies out there and Rachel’s style was awesome!! Also, would love to see something that updates the style of classic movie starts such as Audrey Hepburn!
