This week’s Fashion Inspired by Art is based on the famous Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha’s The Arts, Painting. Below you’ll find three spring/summer outfits inspired by the painting and learn more about Mucha and the Art Nouveau movement.

Alphonse Mucha

Alphonse Mucha is known for his decorative arts, epitomized by the style of today’s featured piece, The Arts, Painting. His works feature bright colors, elegant women, and bold lines. When discussing the Art Nouveau movement, Mucha is one of the first names that comes to mind.

Art Nouveau (“new art”) was at its most popular from 1890-1910. Unlike other movements, it encompassed all types of art — from architecture, to graphic art, to decorative arts such as jewelry, furniture, and textiles. Due to its wide reach, there are few “rules” to the Art Nouveau style. Common features include dynamic, curving lines, emphasis on rhythm, and use of florals. During this time, techniques for mass-produced graphics were rapidly evolving, and printing styles heavily influenced the color and style that artists used.

Although we now see Mucha’s work as an icon of Art Nouveau, he was not as well-received during his lifetime. His style was described as outdated, and his biggest work (The Slav Epic) was in storage for over 25 years following his death.

Flowing Fabric

Peach maxi dress with headband spring outfit

Products: Headwrap, Nail Wraps, Maxi Dress, Armband, Sandals

This outfit is a modern day take on the woman in the painting. This long, flowing maxi dress is as elegant as Mucha’s work, and will look great throughout spring and summer. Add some elegance with accessories like this simple silver headwrap and armband. Wear some simple neutral sandals to keep the attention on the dress. Finally, these affordable nail wraps mirror the red flowers in The Arts, Painting and add a little flair to any outfit.

Beach Take

Products: Body Chain, Anklets, Swimsuit, Sunglasses, Beach Shorts

This second outfit is a beach version of the woman’s outfit. The color of this swimsuit is similar to her dress and revealing in an elegant way. The body chain and anklet add some flair to a simple swimsuit. If you need to cover up, these simple beach shorts have a floral theme that mirrors Mucha’s work. And speaking of florals, these floral deco sunglasses are great for a day at the beach.

Modern Casual

Pink wrap tank bold summer outfit

Products: Sunglasses, Body Chain, Top, Shorts, Earrings, Flats

Finally, this is a modern casual take on the outfit in the painting. This wrap tank top has a similar vibe to the dress, and adding a body chain makes it even more similar. These shorts have a unique circular pattern that draws from the painting, and would make a great addition to your summer wardrobe. Any of the earrings within this set would make a great accessory. Finally, throw on some peachy pink sunglasses to finish the look.

I have always loved Mucha’s paintings. My favorites are the pair Primrose and Feather. They look so much like myself and my sister, respectively. I love your bohemian summertime interpretation of this piece.
