Cottage-core and dark academia have been two of the trendiest aesthetics around during these past few years. It isn’t hard to see why.

After spending so much time inside our homes in an uncertain political and health climate, these two aesthetics represented exactly what we needed: freedom, comfort, and peace.

But there was always one particular style encompassing them both, often merging with and blurring the lines of these two aesthetics.

That versatile partner is an alternative style. Today, I will share six different outfit ideas for all our alternative women out there and for those who want to try alt style out for the first time.

But, first things first:

What is Alternative Style?

Alternative style has been around since there has been a mainstream to rebel against, which means that it is also a bit hard to pin down. But, as a very rough definition, alternative style is fashion that exists outside the mainstream, commercial fashion.

This style, due to its nature as an outsider, encompasses subcultures like goth, emo, punk, grunge, hip-hop, and even (yes!) cottagecore.

The alternative style does not follow trends. It tends to be less practical than other aesthetics, but it shows the extreme creativity of the user. This also means that alternative style is where many of us started our fashion journeys. It allows experimentation, and the possibilities are endless.

Right now, what we understand or see as “alternative” is more in sync with the goth, punk, emo, and grunge scenes. So, that’s where our focus will be for this post.

Must-Haves for an Alt Outfit

An alternative style gives you the freedom to do pretty much whatever you want with whatever you have on hand. But, there are a few items, fabrics, and colors that are staples of alt style.

  • Black – In every way, shape, and form, black items are your best allies to create an alternative wardrobe.
  • Velvet & Tartan – These two fabrics are staples of the alternative scene. Velvet is beloved for its gothic vibe, and tartan for its connections to punk and rock in its early days.
  • Lace & Mesh – Lace and mesh are important parts of an alternative closet. Usually, there’s a lot of layering involved in alt style, and these fabrics are thin enough to do this and also show off a bit of skin.
  • Platforms – While combat boots may be the obvious choice, platforms are the true reigning shoe of alternative style. Creepers, especially, are the most-worn type of shoe. But, platforms in all presentations are the best way to take a look to the next level (literally!).
  • Nighttime-inspired Items – The moon, stars, comets, and the galaxy are go-to elements of alternative looks. They are everywhere, from patterns to accessories, and they are usually found in black, blue, purple, and silver.

So, with that out of the way, let’s get to the alt outfits!

6 Cool Alt Style Outfit Ideas for Alternative Girls

Outfit #1 – Casual Grunge

Items:

Flannel and denim are must-haves in your closet if you want an alternative style. These outfit ideas are also the easiest way to start diving into the alternative world. Jeans are a staple in almost everyone’s closet, and flannels are a great way to add edge to any look.

For a casual, grunge type of look, start off with a white crop top. Then, add a pair of ripped black jeans in a loose fit. Since it’s summer, try wearing a short-sleeved flannel shirt instead of a long-sleeve.

To add a more alternative vibe to the look, use a pair of black suede platform creepers. To finish the look, nighttime-inspired earrings are a great accessory to throw on.

Outfit #2 – Pretty in Punk

Items:

Just because the alternative scene tends to lean into darker colors doesn’t mean it completely shuns color. Pink, in particular, still features heavily in alternative outfits.

These outfit ideas are for all those pink fans out there who want a less girly outfit and a more edgy alternative. Wear a white band T-shirt with a pair of bell-bottom pants in pink velvet. Velvet is easily one of the top three fabrics for alternative style, thanks to its gothic nature.

For shoes, wear a pair of studded platform Oxfords in black suede. If the day gets a bit chilly or you want an extra layer, a classic black moto jacket pairs perfectly with the rest of the look. Finally, accessorize with a black, wide-brim hat.

Outfit #3 – Poolside Vampire

Cute summer alt outfit with puff sleeve bodysuit, button-front black shorts, chunky dad sandals, oversized sunglasses, fishnet tights, wide brim hat

Items:

Summer weather and activities are here for everyone. And it can be hard to style alternative outfits to still work against the backdrop of a colorful pool party. But don’t worry, it’s possible to be alt in the summer!

For the hottest summer days, these outfit ideas involve wearing a black bodysuit with mesh bell sleeves and a square neckline. For bottoms, put on a pair of black, high-waisted denim shorts and black fishnet tights. The tights will add an extra layer of texture that will make the outfit more interesting. Black platform sandals are the perfect summer shoes for this look.

Accessorizing is really important for an alternative look. So to finish the outfit, put on a wide-brim black hat and big framed sunglasses.

Outfit #4 – On the Outskirts of Mainstream

Cute long skirt outfit with an alternative vibe, with a black satin maxi skirt, burgundy corset off-shoulder top, floral mesh tights, and silver creepers

Items:

Corset tops are everywhere nowadays, but alternative women (and men) have worn them for decades. In every style, size, and color, corsets are a staple for goths and emos everywhere. If you need or want to dress up a little bit more, this is the look for you.

Pair a burgundy corset top in a matte fabric with a black satin midi skirt. It would be ideal if the skirt had a slit-like this one, but if it doesn’t or you don’t feel comfortable with one, it’s fine. The look still works without it.

To add more personality and texture to the outfit, wear patterned black tights. Finish it up with a pair of silver Oxford booties.

Outfit #5 – Splash of Color

Colorful alt outfit with acid wash black and pink jeans, mesh burgundy top, black bralette, black and silver bag with a spider, flatform boots in black suede

Items:

As was true for corsets, alternative people have been ahead of the rest of us in rocking tie-dye and mesh for decades.

Try pairing a brown mesh shirt with a black bralette underneath. For pants, rock a fabulous pair of tie-dye jeans in black and red. On your feet, rock black Chelsea boots with a small platform. To finish this alternative fashion, accessorize with a black cross-body bag. It is even better if it has a unique detail or fabric, like this one with its cool spider embellishment.

Outfit #6 – Coolest Sea-Witch in Town

Alt girl outfit with black and white star printed long-sleeve midi dress, wide brim black hat, dangly star and seahorse earrings, tentacle ring, black pointed toe ankle boots

Items:

Patterned midi dresses are everyone’s ally, no matter the style you are going for. These dresses are great for every occasion and are wearable all year long.

This look is an easy one. Throw a black midi dress on. I love this one, which has a nighttime-inspired pattern. You could also opt for one that features mesh or lace. Add a pair of pointy booties to give off a witchy vibe. Then, have fun with your accessories! Wear a wide-brim black hat, cool earrings, and an interesting ring.
