Emma took advantage of the cool pre-fall weather by sporting an outfit that featured a navy corduroy skirt and burgundy turtleneck sweater. She accessorized her look with adorable grey sneakers, ideal for walking up the Morgantown hills at WVU.

Emma loves wearing elements that can be worn multiple ways and each piece of this outfit fits that description. While this turtleneck outfit is trendy, each item can be worn in a variety of ways. As college students, we all know the importance of versatile pieces!

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I definitely feel inspired by seeing style and fashion on my social platforms like Instagram and YouTube. I’m a big social media consumer so I follow a lot of fashion bloggers and influencers to see how they style certain items and looks. It’s also really cool to watch people on my university’s campus [to see what they wear]. [I’m always] thinking in my head how I would wear something like that.”

Where do you like to shop? “When I’m looking for clothes that are not my usual t-shirt and shorts go-to outfits, I go to places like H&M, Old Navy, and Forever 21. I’m always balling on a budget and these stores have unique pieces that I can pair with anything I already have in my closet.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “This outfit is a mixture of all my favorite things. This blue corduroy skirt is the coolest thing I have in my closet. The Banana Republic turtleneck is something I’ve been dying to break out since I bought it last winter. I’m a big fan of anything that’s high neck, so this dark red sweater is such a win for me. I believe the two colors work really well for this fall season. These round sunnies are seriously my favorite fashion accessory I own. I swear I wear them every single day; you will never see me leaving the house without them. My Old Navy shoes are super worn-in, but a staple for almost every outfit I wear throughout the week. [Walking] around campus is much better in a comfy pair of sneakers.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Look at the styles of the people [who really inspire you]. I think that there are so many influencers out there, which is how you can really find yourself.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “I’ve been following Italian fashion blogger, Chiara Ferragni for about 3 years now. She is the founder of The Blonde Salad which was the first ever fashion blog I fell in love with during my freshman year of college. She’s a fashion designer and a huge influencer, which is why I’ve kept up with her for so long.”

What do you do for fun- do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “Something I’ve been doing since middle school is reading fashion magazines. I used to make collages out of magazine clippings to line my high school locker and I still do that now on my walls in my college apartments. The colors, words, and people inspire me so I like looking at that kind of stuff every day.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Chiara Ferragni. She wears ton of high fashion looks but also creates such cool outfits out of simple t-shirts, jeans and platform sneakers. She has a way with style and everything she wears is always amazing and beautiful.”

Elements of Emma’s Outfit

1. Button-Up Skirt

This blue high-waisted corduroy skirt buttons up the front.

Emma’s corduroy skirt is the perfect fall accessory and a beautiful color. I love the button-up feature and extra detailing of the stitching throughout the piece. The skirt is also the perfect length for comfortably walking around campus.

2. Turtleneck Sweater

Emma tucks her wine-colored burgundy turtleneck sweater into a blue high-waisted skirt.

There is no better addition to a fall outfit than a turtleneck sweater. I personally love the look of these two colors together. Typically, people wear darker colors for the fall and winter months, but Emma sported two bold colors together and her look stands out.

3. Sneakers

Light grey canvas lace-up sneakers, perfect for West Virginia University student Emma to wear on campus.

If you don’t have a cute pair of sneakers in your closet, you need to invest immediately. Talk about comfort and style!

4. Round Sunglasses

West Virginia University student wears circular JOhn Lennon sunglasses styled with a high ponytail.

Emma’s favorite accessories are sunglasses. “Fashion eyeglasses that make a bold statement are a huge hit with me,” she says. Being someone who wears contacts and glasses herself, this is a trend she styles everyday. These round sunglasses are her favorite accessory and they bring a chic feel to her ensemble.
