Fashion from Sex and the City

The Sex and the City movie was greatly anticipated after the show ended its reign on HBO. Sex and the City is inspiring for numerous reasons. First, both the show and the movie gave audiences a taste of New York City lifestyle that many find intriguing. (Even if it’s not the most realistic portrayal!) Second, each of the four friends has her own personality and style, so we can all find at least one girl we can relate to!

The movie is centered around Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her wedding to the infamous Mr. Big. From wedding bells to baby plans to relationship turmoil, Sex and the City will keep your eyes glued to the screen!

I will review each major character’s style, including some must-have items inspired by the characters.

1. Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie from Sex and the City

Carrie is the protagonist the audience loves to watch because her mannerisms are quirky and girly. She is known for her open writing style, addiction to designer shoes, and her on-again/off-again smoking habits.

Her outfits frequently mix high-end “splurge” items with vintage/”save” items, and always have a pop of color or an interesting texture. I also noticed that Carrie’s wardrobe in the movie also had a floral motif! Here are my favorite Carrie-inspired items:

Product Information: Voile Floral Dress- Forever 21, Gladiator Heels- Forever 21, Wool Slub Funnel Neck Coat- Max Studio,  Pyramid Studded Belt- Forever 21, Valtorta Clutch- Aldo Shoes, Blu Bijoux Gold Bangles- Max & Chloe, Signature Stretch Vest- Spiegal, Nude Peep Toe “Face” Pumps- Guess

2. Samantha Jones

Samantha Jones from Sex and the City

Samantha Jones is everyone’s favorite sexually promiscuous gal pal. Her style is a refection of her “man eating” and fun-loving ways: full of sex appeal and figure-flattering pieces.

In the film, Samantha had two signature colors: canary yellow and a brick/orange red. However, throughout the show Samantha wore a variety of bright hues. Here are my favorite Sam-inspired items:

Product Information: Juicy Couture “Glim” Yellow Wool Blazer- Bluefly, Ruched Flap Leather Purse- Top Shop, Leopard Print “Lolita” Dress- Guess, Linked Chain Tassel Earrings- Forever 21, Sweetheart Bustier Dress- Fred Flare, Iridescent Beaded Top- Forever 21, Big Sexy Hair Mousse- Target

3. Charlotte York

Charlotte is the most conservative of the four friends. Throughout the series, she is struggling with the desire to have a baby, and in the movie, some exciting things happen that bring her closer to her dream.

Charlotte’s style is very classic and polished. She isn’t ever flashy, but her femininity and her detailed-to-perfection accents make her style my personal favorite! Here are some Charlotte-inspired items:

4. Miranda Hobbes

Sex and the City - Miranda

Miranda is the fiery red head who reminds me of the type of friend who would have your back in any troublesome situation. Miranda is the queen of separates, which comes from her working wardrobe. However, her nighttime looks often include an interesting pattern or print. Here are my favorite Miranda-inspired items:

  1. I’m a cross between quirky Carrie and classy Charlotte, I think. I really love how you reproduced each one of their specific styles – good eye! Much enjoyed this one.

  3. This is a good attempt to capture the essence of every character but the items listed do not exactly match. Props for the writing and descriptions though.

  4. I never saw the Sex and the City movie.. The character whose style I identified the most with was Samantha’s because her style is very bright and cheerful which is somewhat close to mine.

  5. I think fashion-wise, I’m Carrie. I really like to try on new things and I’m absolutely in love with ALL of her wardrobe in the movie. I also like Miranda’s style – they’re so chic! Samantha and Charlotte are too feminine and flashy to me, so they’re not really my style. I love the outfits you pick for Carrie and Miranda – especially love the studded belt and gladiator heels in the Carrie’s section! This post is awesome! 🙂

  6. I adored this post. I have always considered that one goes through the SatC phases in life. Like you start out like Carrie, all adventurous in your clothing, wanting to do everything at once. Then you turn into a Miranda when you get out of college and you want to look grown up (though Miranda’s style changed the most in the series, she’s barely recognizable by the end!) with all these fine tailored suits. Then you turn to Charlotte, the prim and proper housewife with the understated couture and the matching colors. Then, once that stage is over and you’re either post divorce or mid-life crisis you morph into Samantha and the man-eater attitude esp of younger guys translates into one’s clothing.

  7. This is a great post.

One thing I was wondering about though: why no eyelet dress in the Charlotte-inspired outfits? So many dark colors, too many for Charlotte I would think.

  8. I LOVE Carrie’s wardrobe, I wish I could own it! I relate most to her style, i think she takes risks that work for her. She’s very eccentric but she dresses very feminine, sweet and classic. I would consider her the sort of modern Holly Golightly. The looks you picked out look like things Carrie would wear except that leather vest is one of those questionable things she wore in the early seasons.

  9. Charlotte has my favourite style- very similar to mine. It’s all about being classy, and good looking. I think I may be a bit more flashy, but certainly the same level of conservative atire!

  10. the one thing i noticed about the movie was all the belts. They threw a belt on each character wherever they could.
    really defines their tiny waists

  11. I love this post! I just watched the movie for the first time last night and was completely immersed in the fashion (coincidence? I think so). I LOVED their styles! Everyone was much more polished in the movie than on the show.

One thing I didn’t get about Carrie’s style was the pajama pearls. Actually, just her pajamas in general. But I loved the studded belt. So versatile.

  12. One thing that I learned while watching the DVD commentary (judge me) is that they tried to coordinate Carrie’s wardrobe MUCH more to her situation–hence the constant appearance of the black studded belt. If you watch closely, you’ll see it in most scenes and with all kinds of outfits. If you’re looking for a How To Wear article about a studded belt, that definitely will give you SO many examples.

I feel like they had to “type” the outfits a lot more for the movie, since they had to cram it all into just one film. I agree that maybe it hurt the characters some because they sometimes were so stereotypical, but at the same time, what a great representation of character.

I have to say, though, Miranda’s style was WAY better than it ever was in the show. She looked fantastic all the time, and I loved it. Great fashion.

GREAT POST. I really enjoyed it!!

  13. I love this post too! Fashion-wise I’m probably a Carrie and life-wise my friends would defiantly say I’m a Charlotte!

When I first started watching SATC I just didn’t ‘get’ Carrie’s style, but I’ve grown to love it over the years. I love that tiered Newport News dress you picked out for Miranda!

  15. I remember thinking that Carrie’s style has evolved quite a bit while watching this movie. In the Tv series, she dressed a lot more unexpectedly…you couldn’t really define her style has anything more than fashion-loving. Her movie wardrobe was a bit more cohesive…kind of miss her more crazy ensembles!!
