Updating one’s wardrobe from season to season can be difficult to afford for any college fashionista. That’s why it’s best to learn how to wear winter clothes in spring. You get more wears for your money and delay having to buy a ton of spring clothes right away.
I know, I know: It still really feels like winter out there and many places are still covered in snow. But spring will be here in about a month and a half — so it’s good to be prepared!
Here are three ways to transition your favorite winter pieces into the springtime, with outfit ideas for chunky knit sweaters, turtlenecks, and knee-high boots.
1. Chunky Knit Sweaters
The first winter favorite that I chose is the chunky knit sweater! This maroon one from Mango is perfect because it adds a pop of color to the look.
Since sweaters like this one are bulky, it’s best to pair them with tighter items underneath. This striped bodysuit from Madewell is a great choice because it adds a pattern to the look while balancing the thickness of the sweater. Bodysuits are awesome because they won’t ride up or come out of the top of your skirt when you’re getting up from your desk.
This velvet ruffle skirt also helps in balancing this look and adding a hint of spring. The upper portion of it is tighter and then the subtle ruffle on the bottom gives it a flirty flair.
When it comes to accessories, it’s best to go for more simple pieces. A classic black leather crossbody bag and a plain black beret are great closet staples that work well with just about any clothing combination. The same goes for these black chelsea boots from Newlook. They amp up the ensemble and give it a more edgy vibe.
2. Over-the-Knee Boots
The next winter favorite that’s great for spring is the over-the-knee boot. These boots have been all the rage for a while now and they look awesome when worn in springtime. These taupe Steve Madden boots are to die for and work with almost any outfit.
My favorite thing to do with over-the-knee boots is to wear them with skirts, specifically herringbone or plaid skirts for a preppy vibe. The one pictured above is adorable and has a hidden tuxedo stripe on the side. It also has a subtle enough pattern that it goes great with the pinstripe shirt above.
Since this look is a bit more elevated, adding a newsboy cap makes it a bit more casual. A black leather purse and a classic leather watch add additional interest to the look. (Plus, the watch band matches the heel of the boot!)
The last winter favorite that can be transitioned into spring is the turtleneck! This might seem like a curveball but hear me out: Turtlenecks truly are three-season pieces.
This turtleneck is from J.Crew and if gray isn’t your shade they have many other colors including some with stripes as well! For this look I paired the turtleneck with a satin cami and an embroidered denim skirt. Embroidered items are super hot right now, and so is layering camis over long-sleeve tops. If you rock this look, you’re sure to be one of the most stylish women on your campus.
To accessorize this outfit, I added these amazing red orange block heels, a canteen bag, and a cuff bracelet. The canteen bag is a new item from Target’s Universal Thread line and it’s such a nice color!
I also think cuff bracelets are awesome and MantraBands has some of the cutest quotes to choose from. The one in the photo says “she believed she could, so she did.” Perfect motivation for a busy college girl!
