bumpits

Hey guys! I’m Elizabeth from the University of Missouri and I’m your new beauty columnist! I’m obsessed with everything beauty related from volumizing shampoo to coral toenail polish. When I’m not trying the 78th newest mascara on the market, I’m working out, watching the Real Housewives or jamming to Lil Wayne in the car.

You’ve undoubtedly seen the infomercial at 2 in the morning that features girls of different hair types all rocking the same voluminous bump in the back of their hair.

The premise is great: a fuller head of hair without the pain or breakage that comes with teasing hair. After all, who doesn’t want to look like Brigitte Bardot in five minutes? On the other hand, is this look too much for real life? I’m not sure how I really feel about girls with four-inch high hair during 8 AM Psychology 101.

Of course, as with all as-seen-on-TV products, I was always skeptical as to whether Bump-Its actually worked. This year, my Halloween costume required the inserts and I bought myself a pack at Walmart.

My Results:

Bumpit1

BumpIt2

What I Loved About Them:

The packaging:
Bump-Its come in a pink and black box that also has an easy to follow instruction pamphlet and a teasing comb. The packaging is cute and I liked the fact that they included a comb.

Bump-Its

Their staying power:
Since I have dark brown hair, I bought the black Bump-Its, which never showed through my hair. After minimal teasing, a lot of extra-hold hairspray and a dozen bobby pins, my hair stayed put all night long, even after an extreme Backstreet Boys dance party and two rounds of karaoke.

What I Wasn’t Sold On:

The look:
I have a lot of long, thick hair, which made wearing a Bump-It easy. But my roommate, who has medium-length fine blonde hair, looked ridiculous with one in her hair. If you have hair like hers, I’m not sure if this would work without a lot of teasing. And if you’re going to tease your hair anyway, you probably don’t need a Bump-It for volume.

The shape:
The kit comes with three different bumps: a small one the size of a pink pearl eraser that’s supposed to be for bangs, a medium one that’s six inches long and 3/4 of an inch high and a larger one that’s five inches long and an inch and a half high. Basically, when I put the largest one in, I looked like a cone-head. Not so cute.

My Verdict:

Although the Bump-It might work for some girls with the right hair type and head shape, they didn’t work for me. I think the look is much too extreme for daytime but could work with an up-do. But for now, my Bump-Its are staying put in the back of my dresser.

What do you guys think? Would you try a Bump-It? Let me know with a comment.

  1. My hair is a medium length and it worked just fine and he more I try different styles and hair-parting techniques the better it looks. Definitely try it and don’t give up if you don’t master the styles immediately.

  2. I agree with Bailey, if done properly it comes out super cute but if not you look quite foolish!! I have blonde and very thin hair and the little bumps on the top of the bump-it’s shows through and looks really bad!! But for people with thicker hair it looks much better!!

  3. I too tried the volumehairbase product from Japan. I actually purchased it when I was in Asia, but had lost it. Thanks for the link!

  4. I tried, them but the “bump” looks totally un-natural…..very disappointed with the results. I tired this new thing that is like a way better version of the bumpit….the website is www.volumehairbase.com. It’s made of velcro so it sticks on really well and it doesn’t fall off at all!! It’s also like a hump-shaped thing, so it looks really natural, and it comes in 2 sizes, a small one and a big one. You can also use it when u have your hair down, or tied up in a ponytail, or half-up…..super easy to use….u can use hairspray if u want, like at night-time, but in the day-time I don’t need any. I think it’s made in Japan, but you can buy it in Canada or the US….I totallyyyy luv it!!!!!

  5. A friend bought this for me, I’ve never sen her wear it but she swears it works. Personally I have long straight hair and it doesn’t look like it does on the box on me, maybe my head is shaped funny. But he worse thing in my experience with this, is that it feels like it’s gonna fall off my head.

  6. I bought it the first time i saw it on the infommercial. I have NEVER bought something from an infommercial but I thought I would give this one a try. And let me tell you… the commercials make it look a lot better than it is. My biggest problem with it was taking it out of my hair… OMG it hurt incredibly bad. I had to get my roommate to take it out by pulling each hair piece by piece… Let’s just say i have never put it in my hair since.

  7. What were you for Halloween that required a Bump-It?

Me and my cousin would always see the commercial during the summer… and laugh at how ridiculously huge headed the models looked when they wore the biggest Bump-It. I don’t really think Bump-Its are worth your money.. but that’s just my opinion.

  8. Blah. I tried them, returned them for a refund.

I was so excited when I bought them because I love hair with volume but.. I HATED the way they looked on me. Looks like it worked for you though, looks good..

  9. I had a good friend of mine use it nearly every day this past month and it looked amazing on her, it was clean and didn’t show. The bump was the right smooth look.

  10. I like hair with volume, but I think bump-its are too dramatic and anyway, never look as good as someone who just spent the time to tease their hair.

And (I really, really hope this doesn’t come across as rude) Kammy, nobody’s going to tell you that it looks dated. IDK about anyone else, but if I notice something out of the ordinary and find myself compelled to say something about it, my words will never be, “God that looks tacky.” I ALWAYS say something complimentary or don’t say anything at all. And I don’t look good 100% of the time, but the comments I get on the way I look are always 100% positive. I’m not saying that teased hair is dated (again, I actually like it in moderation) but saying that nobody ever says it’s dated isn’t proof that no one thinks that. Just bringing up a point. 🙂

  11. My mother actually had someone buy these for her. She has super thin hair and they just didn’t work for her.
She did pass them on to me though and I really love them.
I have kind of think, shoulder length hair and the first time I put the bump it in it looked perfect- even before I’d done much to it. Depend a lot on where you part the hair and place the bump it.
I stayed in with no problems- sadly though, I am a brunette and my mum’s a blonde. For the most part my hair covers the light yellow bumpit, but I am definitely considering buying the proper color for my hair.

I think the success of this product depends on your hair type and length, plus where you place the bump it (further forward, back of middle) and how you feel about the “bumped” look in general.

Personally I love wearing them for formal occasions and then with headbands or partially up for more casual outings. Great way to look like I spent time on my hair when all I did was throw a piece of plastic in and clip the hair.

I honestly however would likely never have bought it on my own.

  12. Hmmm…. I tend to tease my hair up bump-it style almost everyday. It stays on its own with just hairspray and I always wear a big head band with it. I have only ever had good comments never anyone saying its dated and I really like the how it looks. You kinda have to have the right haircut for it to work, though… Different strokes for different folks I guess.. just saying…

  13. I have Bump-its, the little one for bangs is good for the day, the medium one was really good for nighttime. I have thick hair so it looked fine. But I’ve seen people with thin hair wearing it, kinda ridiculous. Definitely only for people with thick hair.

  14. I love this! I also like that there is beauty columnist now:) I have never wanted to try Bump-Its, the style they create are dated. I was wondering if you were taking suggestions for other products to review? I would love to hear what you think about some of the most popular mascara brands, Lash Stiletto, Cover Girl Lash Blast, and others. I would also love if you could cover hair removal products. I have always been tempted to try smoothe away. This series looks really promising and I look forward to what you come up with next!

  15. Thanks for doing a review on these. I always wondered if they were worth getting.

I never thought the people in the commercial looked good with the bump-its the right way, but this just proves the point more! lol
