Awards season 2015 is officially under way! TV’s hottest stars braved 100+ degree temperatures in Hollywood last night to attend the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As always, they gave us plenty of fashion moments to discuss.

Top 5 Best Dressed

In no particular order, here are my five favorite looks of the night.

Kerry Washington in Marc Jacobs

Kerry Washington rocked a chainmail-inspired Marc Jacobs frock and I couldn’t get enough of her look. Fun fact: This dress just debuted on the runway three days ago! Kerry paired her sequin-embellished, 3/4-sleeved dress with strappy metallic heels and minimal jewelry. Beauty-wise, she opted for a faux bob and understated makeup.

Taraji P. Henson in Alexander Wang

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee Taraji P. Henson looked edgy and on-trend in a chain-embellished Alexander Wang creation. From the triangle cutout detail to the bike chain straps and sheer lace skirt, this gown had a lot going on, yet it all combined to perfection. Taraji finished her ensemble with a simple box clutch, sleek hair, and a cool smokey eye.

Emma Roberts in Jenny Packham

American Horror Story and Scream Queens star Emma Roberts looked every bit the Old Hollywood starlet in blush pink Jenny Packham. While some people thought this dress washed Emma out, I loved how it almost matched her skin tone for an ethereal look. To continue the Old Hollywood vibe, Emma wore her hair in glamorous waves and accessorized, naturally, with plenty of diamonds.

Sarah Hyland in Zac Posen

Modern Family nominee Sarah Hyland looked fantastic in a merlot Zac Posen gown. She paired her gown with matching red Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Of her jewelry choices, she told reporters, “I had a vision about this dress when I tried it on that I wanted it to be monochromatic, and [stylist Brad Goreski and I] both thought the same thing.” Sarah certainly has a knack for styling!

Laverne Cox in Calvin Klein Collection

The always gorgeous Laverne Cox hit a new fashion high last night in my favorite look of hers to date. The Orange is the New Black star stunned in this teal Calvin Klein Collection gown by Francisco Costa. The minimalist frock fit her body like a glove, and the side cutouts showed just the right amount of skin. Laverne accessorized with a simple clutch and statement heels that were only visible from the back. Well played!

Other Notable Ensembles

Here are some other looks that got the fashion commentators talking last night.

Kiernan Shipka in Dior Couture

Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka turned heads on the red carpet by wearing – gasp – pants! Her Dior Couture look reminded me of Belle from Beauty in the Beast, but in a totally unexpected, fashion-forward way. I loved that she took a style risk – what about you?

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

Lady Gaga opted for an uncharacteristically subdued look at last night’s ceremony, wearing a single-shouldered black Brandon Maxwell gown. Accessorizing only with diamond earrings and voluminous hair, Gaga looked grown-up and glamorous, if perhaps a bit unlike herself.

Maisie Williams in Ermanno Scervino

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams took a fashion risk in a strapless pink Ermanno Scervino quilted dress and trendy feather heels. This was one of those “love it or hate it” looks that had fashion commentators divided. Personally, I don’t mind it – Maisie is young and fun, and her outfit reflects that. It was also nice to see her with long waves, a major departure from her Arya Stark look.

Aubrey Plaza in Alexander Vauthier

Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza looked incredible in a sparkly black Alexander Vauthier gown featuring a low neck and high slit. Typically, low necks and high slits can look over-the-top when paired together, but Aubrey’s dress works thanks to its dark tone and 3/4 sleeves. The star wisely kept accessories to a minimum, adding just a few rings and some pointy-toed patent heels.

Claire Danes in Prada

Claire Danes, always a fashion risk-taker, was true to form last night in a sequined purple and red Prada number. I’m so conflicted about this dress – on one hand, I love how unique it is! On the other hand, of the night’s two chain strap gowns, I greatly prefer Taraji’s. Unfortunately for Claire, it’s hard not to compare the two. What do you think of Claire’s look? Is it hit or miss for you?

Least Favorite Look

There were so many gorgeous looks last night, but they weren’t all hits. The following look missed the mark for me.

Heidi Klum in Versace

Heidi Klum in Versace at the 2015 Emmy Awards

It’s hard to top Heidi Klum‘s level of fashion influence – she told reporters that she just “went on Style.com and picked out what [she] wanted”. That’s what makes this Dancing with the Stars-esque choice so baffling. You can wear anything and you choose this

To me, this lemon chiffon Versace gown has too much going on. We’re talking mesh AND one-sleeve AND ruffles AND texture AND eyelash trim AND rhinestones AND a bright color. The combination is overpowering – you almost miss Heidi, one of the world’s most gorgeous women. It’s always nice to see a fashion risk, but this was a bizarre misstep.

  1. I actually kind of love Heidi Klum’s dress! The crazy combinations of textures and structure really reminds me of this whole Japanese subculture of fashion I really like called “mori kei” or “mori girl,” which basically means “forest girl.” Like Heidi’s dress, the looks are made with lots of different textures layered together with feminine touches — like you can layer lace and fur and knit all at once in the same outfit! And then you can add bows and ruffles and other fun details on top of that! Pretty much anything goes, as long as you end up looking girly like a fairy in the end haha. It’s pretty cool and experimental! I’ll try to find some pictures for you guys 😀

Although I enjoy the color of Heidi’s dress, I think it would’ve had a much better reaction here if it was made in black or white… Something more subdued or neutral rather than “In-Your-Face Yellow.” Anyways, I still think it’s pretty exciting to see someone break the mold and take proportional risks on the red carpet! And coming from Heidi, I can’t help but think it’s very tasteful!

I found some examples of “mori girl” fashion below if you’re interested! (â—¡ ‿ â—¡ ✿)

  2. I absolutely loved Kiernan Shipka’s look on the red carpet. At first, I was iffy but when I saw it again today, I decided I was completely in love with it. It’s fashion-forward and absolutely gorgeous. Lady Gaga’s look was…. unexpected – and absolutely beautiful! I love seeing this look on her and want to see it more in the future. My favorite look was probably Sarah Hyland. I love her dress and how classy she looks in it. I also loved Sofia Vergara’s look – she absolutely rocked it! My least favorite was probably Naomi Watts in Dior.
