I've always been a lover of cardigans - they're the ultimate cozy layering piece for cooler weather, and they come in endless colors, prints, and styles. Lately, I've been noticing a lot of extra-long "duster" cardigans popping up on runways, in magazines, and on fashion blogs.

Duster cardigans typically fall somewhere between the knee and the ankle, though that of course depends on your height. The extra length makes them a really fun and versatile piece to layer over (and even under!) other pieces, and they can add a bit of drama to even the most casual ensemble. Not sure how to style this trendy piece? Here are three ideas to get you started:

Casual and Monochromatic

Black jeans and ombre duster cardigan

Product Info: Cardigan, Boots, Jeans, Tee, Necklace, Headwrap

I'm a big fan of black, white, and gray - I think this muted color combo has a cool and minimalist vibe. This ombré gray duster cardigan instantly caught my eye, and it would look effortlessly stylish when paired with sleek black jeans and a slouchy white tee.

Add black leather ankle boots to elongate the legs and a set of layered necklaces for just a little sparkle. And for the last-minute morning rush, just throw your hair up in a messy bun with this trendy gray headwrap.

Transitioning to Fall

Product Info: Dress, Cardigan, Wedges, Tote, Rings

If you're not quite ready to let go of your summer wardrobe, a duster cardigan is the perfect way to transition it to fall. Layer a dark gray cardigan over a printed maxi dress, then slip on your favorite wedge sandals for a little height. A slouchy tote is the perfect bag to carry your school supplies, and as far as jewelry goes, keep it simple with just a few stackable gold rings.

Bold and Trendy

Product Info: Shorts, Tank, Cardigan, Heels, Necklace, Nail Polish

This bold and modern look is the perfect way to take a duster cardigan into nighttime. Mix a Southwestern-print cardigan with edgy leather shorts and a simple black tank, then accessorize with a chunky geometric necklace. Slip on a pair of trendy faux leather peep-toe booties and add an unexpected pop of color with a few coats of bright blue nail polish.
