Fashion Inspiration: Taylor Swift's I Knew You Were Trouble

Once upon a time, we all knew Taylor Swift as the country-pop princess with the girly, romantic sense of style. However, in the new video for her latest single “I Knew You Were Trouble.”, Taylor experiments with a new aesthetic that’s anything but dainty.

In the video, TSwift trades her fairytale look for a punk vibe, sporting a messy, chopped bob with dip-dyed pink ends, and wearing a variety of edgy, hipster-inspired outfits throughout. Although I was a bit skeptical at first, I must admit I’m becoming slightly obsessed with her newfound edgy look (even if it’s just for the video).

If you’ve yet to see it, catch her new video below!

Whether you’re a fan of Taylor’s or not, this video proves that even girly girls can rock the edgy look with a few key pieces. Below, I’ve created a few fun outfits inspired by the song and video. Scroll down to view them all.

Lying on the Cold, Hard Ground

Product Information: Top – ASOS, Jeans – Forever21, Shoes – GoJane, Necklace – Forever21

The video’s opening scene features Taylor in a casual look with edgy accessories. While you might not be waking up in the middle of the desert anytime soon, you can rock a similar look with a graphic-print oversized tee and acid-wash jeans. Pair with combat boots and a layered charm necklace to put the finishing touches on this super fierce number.

Places I’ve Never Been

Product Information: Top – Urban Outfitters, Skirt – NastyGal, Shoes – Free People, Bag – DSW, Necklace – Forever21

Inspired by Taylor’s more girly side, mix a high-low skirt with a crop top. Wear with some classic high-top Converse for a casual aesthetic. Grab a fringe-accented bag and an arrowhead necklace to complete the trendy ensemble!

Whispers on the Street

Ikywt outfit 3

Product Information: Shirt – Forever21, Tank – PacSun, Shorts – ASOS, Shoes – Forever21, Sunglasses – Urban Outfitters

For our final look, we’re channeling Taylor’s grunge-inspired outfit, and adding a modern twist. To start, layer a lace-back tank under a tartan-print button-up shirt for a super cool vibe. Wear with of-the-moment studded shorts and slouchy ankle booties for extra edge. Before heading out the door, be sure to slip on a pair of round sunnies to complete the look! Oh, and those “whispers on the street”? They’re just passersby marveling at how awesome you look!

What do you think?

Did you watch Taylor Swift’s new video? What did you think about her new look? Would you rock any of the edgy looks above? Which outfit is your favorite? Would you like to see more posts like these in the future? Let me know in the comments!

I have to say (again) I am a little tired of Taylor Swift. And Gossip Girl. The outfits are cute, but I need a little more variation.

These outfits are cute, but I liked Taylor’s gorgeous curly hair and girly style more than this new mature look. I get that she needs to switch things up, but I really liked her old style.

I much preferred Taylor’s old fashion music style. I understand her wanting to expand into a new market, but the lyrics weren’t as complex as previous albums and sounded immature for a woman her age. I like the new style of clothing, but not as much as the classy, timeless pieces she used to wear and agree with Hannah (above) about switching to new styles of celebs. (Especially as if I wore any of these outfits outside right now I would catch a cold. Perhaps something a little more winter-related?)

    Thanks.

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for the feedback on the post! We love hearing your thoughts on College Fashion 🙂

However, I want you to keep in mind that this new “style” that the outfits were inspired by were from the video and song and not from Taylor’s actual everyday wear. She noted that she wanted to go for an edgy look to match the video, so keep that in mind when commenting!

    Thanks again!

i agree with Sarah that it would be nice if the looks were appropriate for the weather that most of the country is experiencing at the time it’s posted. Maybe someone in Florida could pull it off, but no one up north could do this before april

As someone who generally has a ‘edgier’ style I really like these outfit suggestions and the way the video was styled, but I’m not going to get into how I feel about the song, or how wel the video suits it because i have nothing but negative things to say in that regard. I honestly would not expect this sort of look to come out of a Taylor Swift music video.

I love Taylor Swift. Her style is very girly and feminine. I agree about her curly hair – so much cuter curly than straight.

Gotta hand it to Taylor though, that red lip is killer. And honestly, switching out the Olive shorts for Olive skinnies or adding tights to the third outfit isn’t that much of a stretch.

IMO it’s easier to winterize an outfit with creative layering than it is to adapt a winter look for summer. SO props for these looks!

While I love Taylor… I don’t think you need to make a new post on her everytime she releases a new video… there are so many other artists!

I agree with Yvonne… Let’s mix it up a bit please! I’d love outfits based on different artists. The post on fashion inspired by Macklemore is probably my favorite CF entry to date.

I like the outfits but I agree with Yvonne. You’re clearly a Taylor fanatic, and cool for you, but your readers are a diverse group of people who like different styles. I think we’ve had enough Swift inspiration.

I love the urban style she goes for in the vid for this song. I wear a lot of urban style clothes myself and am a huge fan of criminal damage clothing, as well as high street brands like urban outfitters. I love the clothes youve chosen for the ‘places Iv’e never been’ section. as for being weather appropriate I say add a big fur coat.

I actually do live near Florida so the weather is nice enough to wear a lot of these outfits lol I love the last look. I’m not crazy about Taylor Swift or her new song/music video and I do wish that there were more music inspiration posts from different artists but this was a nice post. Her video reminded me of Rihanna’s we found love video (crazy about that song) and I was wondering if you could do an inspiration post for that video because I am obsessed with the outfit she wears in the video with the blue top and gray skirt. Thanks!

I’m just saying, y’all should look at the outfits not the celebrity!
The only problem I have with this post is that I’d freeze to death wearing these outfits! Aha, but they’re still amazing!
    Great Job, CF! (:

    Hi everyone!

While I’m well aware not everyone is as big of a Taylor Swift fan as I am, I wanted to maintain a focus on the OUTFITS, not the celebrity. Please keep in mind that CF is a positive place, I feel as though many of your comments do not reflect that. Just a friendly reminder! Thank you 🙂

taylor’s not really my favorite either, but i was just mostly excited to see looks i can actually wear. it’s dipping into the 60s after dark in florida, but it’s still in the 70s even 80s in the day. and like someone above me said, it’s pretty easy to winterize summer outfits–add tights, sweaters, change shorts for pants–but it’s pretty hard to see a bundled up outfit and figure out how to adapt that for the warmth. so thank you!
