Living in the digital age has its perks, but have you ever felt that your style belongs in a different decade? Brittani, for example, is the epitome of ’90s fabulous, rocking a look that could have come straight from Lauryn Hill’s wardrobe. As she strutted through the streets of Brooklyn hunting for the ultimate vintage boutique, Brittani gave off major Fresh Prince vibes.

Student style; oxblood off-the-shoulder top, vintage windbreaker jacket, headscarf, distressed light-wash jeans, and chunky black booties.

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “I would have to say ’90s – the ’90s era.”

Where do you like to shop? Forever 21 is my favorite because you can just be versatile with different styles. I like online shops a lot. It seems like the clothes fit a little bit better online. [I also like] vintage stores and little boutique stores.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “I usually go with however my mood is and then I try to match the style to how I’m feeling. So if I’m feeling a little punk rock, then I’ll wear something like that. If I’m feeling hip-hop then I’ll wear something that matches that. But I would probably have to compare it [most] to the ’90s era.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I wanted something that [could] get wet because it’s raining today and something comfortable in case I was going to be walking around. But then something slouchy [too], to show a little bit of skin. I just like to be comfortable but chic at the same time.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “I would say wear what makes you feel comfortable. Wear something that even if you’re in a bad mood, it’ll put you in a better mood. Wear something that just keeps your spirits up and reflects who you are inside.”

What are your favorite fashion trends right now?Gingham pattern fabric! I’m loving that right now. The hammer pants, the Adidas style – sporty looking style, [and] I love combat boots. I think my favorite thing is sneakers with dresses and skirts. I just like mixing that dressing up [with] that comfortability thing again.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? Alexander Wang, SupremeNike has always been a favorite.”

Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love painting, I love sculpting – making pots and plates and vases and stuff. I love modeling. I love being behind the camera too, [like] photography, directing, set designing, videography – but more directing [videos] as well… and doing hair and makeup!”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I would say Missy Elliott. I love to dance too, so her clothes look like they would be comfortable to dance in and they are just really spunky and fresh and I think that fits my personality. I think I would also raid Selena‘s closet because I love her glittery tight fitting clothes and it just make me feel like I want to get on a stage and sing in front of the whole crowd.”

Elements of Brittani’s Outfit

1. Vintage Satin Headwrap

Navy, dark red, and maroon headscarf on University of North Carolina student.

Don’t have a cute hat? No worries! A headscarf can do the same thing, and in many cases can do it better. In addition to being an adorable headwear item, a satin headscarf can also be functional. Satin and silk fabrics are great to wear on your hair, as they allow your locks to retain moisture and won’t snag or pull.

2. Off-The-Shoulder Top

University of North Carolina student wears a matching maroon off-the-shoulder top and windbreaker with dainty gold jewelry accents.

This ribbed top is the balancing piece in Brittani’s wardrobe. The tightness of her shirt allows her curves to peek through the oversized jacket, creating a sultry look without showing too much skin. The key is to sneak in that sex appeal and play with silhouettes, and she nailed it.

3. 90’s Burgundy Windbreaker

Student wears fall trends; oxblood off-the-shoulder top and matching windbreaker jacket, accessorized with vintage navy and maroon headscarf, gold hoop earrings, and simple gold necklace.

There’s nothing sexy about windbreakers, especially old school ones – let’s be honest. However, Brittani brilliantly opened hers up and slouched it to the side, taking it from sad to sexy in a minute. Choosing the right jacket to pair with your outfit can make or break it. This look is styled perfectly for a rainy day.

4. Leather Booties

Student wears black chunky-heeled booties around campus for comfort and style.

With all the color coordination Brittani cleverly chose, she opted for simple black low-heeled chunky booties. Practicality is essential when picking footwear suitable for walking through the city all day, but she did not sacrifice style for it. These black booties are a staple of Brittani’s, and for good reason.
