I’ve received a few emails recently asking about how often a girl should wash her hair. I did a little research and it’s an interesting topic because there really seems to be a big divide in what people recommend.

So, how often should you wash your hair? Personally, I was always taught to shampoo my hair every day. Over the years, however, I’ve learned that daily washing really dries my hair out.

These days, because I get highlights and my hair is damaged, I only shampoo 3 or 4 times a week. This has definitely helped my hair a lot: it’s much less dried out without the constant shampooing and blow drying.

Celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, who does Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson’s hair, agrees that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. According to Oprah.com, Ken says that “certain hair types and textures only require washing once a week, where others work well washing 2 to 3 times a week.”

Thursday’s New York Times style section had an article about hair washing frequency, only to the extreme. Of Course I Washed My Hair Last Year (I’m Almost Certain) talked about how lots of women wash their hair just once a week and some only wash once a month! The average seems to be around 3 times a week. Apparently it’s trendy to spend less time on your hair.

As someone whose hair gets oily after just a few days, I can’t imagine only washing your hair once a month, but maybe it would work well for those with dry hair? The idea does sound tempting – who wouldn’t want to spend less time doing their hair each week? I just don’t know how it would really work for the average woman.

What are your opinions on this? Do you wash your hair every day or do you think once a week is best? Leave a comment and take the poll below! I want to hear what you think!

  2. I wash my hair once a week for two reasons:

    1. It takes me four hairs to completely do my hair (I wash, deep condition, dry in rollers, than flat iron).

    2. My hair gets dried out quickly and I need all the moisture I can get, especially since my hair is relaxed.

I rarely experience my hair getting too greasy, and if it does, it is usually because of too many moisturizing products. However, the next day my hair looks normal because my hair quickly soaks up all of the moisture instead of producing more.

With different hairstyles, such as braids or twists, girls will go for as long as two months without washing their hair because, there is no greasy buildup, and also it makes the style last longer and is actually healthy for the hair.

It all depends on your hair type and texture. I know people who won’t go one day without washing their hair because it looks greasy.

  3. I have thick wavy hair, and I try to avoid washing it because it’s damaged from dying and straightening, but I run every day and I don’t want to leave my hair sweaty and dirty. Any ideas?

  4. For black women, washing the hair every day, is considered innappropriate. Since black women have more coarse hair, this leaves it to be less manageable. Thus, black women are advised to wash every second week or once a month – to stimulate the flow of natural oils to the tip of the hair. When wet, a black women’s hair will turn back to it’s natural state – kinky and afro-like. Alot of african-american women tend to put grease in their hair to aid in allowing the hair to grow. As a black woman, I wash my hair once every month, and make sure I comb out my hair while I have a leave-n condition to help with the breakage problem. It depends on the condition and texture of your hair, but in general, hair should not be washed every day – once a week or twice a week is highly recommended.

  5. I have nappy hair, and half Russian, half Hispanic. xD I like to wash my hair daily, because it’s so frizzy and the humidity is horrible where I live that if I get it wet, it becomes straight for the rest of the day, and it is MUCH easier to comb, but I’ve been trying to wash it less starting this week. I’ve gone two days without washing and am going to today. (:

  6. Just to experiment, I haven’t washed my hair for 15 hours. I styled my hair this morning and it is a greasy mess. It’s heavy and I feel it weighing more than normal on my head. It has no body and the scalp is visibly greasy.

I thought about using just a “smidge” shampoo and ONLY scrubbing my scalp. And not “washing” the ends, which are damaged from coloring.

  7. im african american and get my hair relaxed almost every two months. i wash my hair 2 or 3 times a week. i cut it in a bob and i find that if i wash it and do the works[blow dry and straighten] to it every few days, it says neat. if not, i have a flat afro on my hands.i use this really good namaste shampoo for now or the relaxed and natural pantene shampoo or dark and lovely. all work amazing. and for product, i use mostly garnier fructis stuff because it keeps my hair mositurized and smells great. the smoothing milk works great for frizz, the shine drops keep my hair shiny and smooth and the leave in conditioner i use almost every day, justa little.

  8. I know a lot about hair. If you have thin hair, wash it once or twice a week. If you have medium hair, wash it three or four times a week. If you have thick hair, wash it five or six times a week. And if you have super thick hair, wash it every day.

  9. I wash my hair everyday. I’ve tried washing every other day, but my bangs start to look so oily and it bothers me. Personally, my hair feels much healthier if I wash it everyday! So I see no problem with washing everyday. Just get your hair trimmed regularly and there shouldn’t be a problem!

  10. i wash my hair about twice a week….sometimes three times….but that’s rare.

I find that when i used to wash my hair everyday – i NEEDED to – but when i slowly weened my self off of washing daily – my hair eventually slowed down its oil production.

Your body adapts to how you treat it… it’s true.

  11. My hair has thio relaxer in it. I wash it every two weeks because I don’t want to use a flat iron on my hair too often. After it’s been washed, my stylist flat irons it and it stays bone straight till my next appointment.
