Fashion Inspired by the Hogwarts Houses – Gryffindor

JK Rowling changed the world when she wrote the Harry Potter series. Not only did she write seven amazing novels, but she created a new and exciting world for her readers to lose themselves in. And after the responses to our recent posts on Hermione Granger’s style, and Fashion Inspired by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part I, we know you guys love these books as much as we do!

If you don’t already know the story of Harry Potter, there’s too much to summarize here, so we recommend picking up the books already (you’ll thank us!) or checking out the HP Wikipedia Page for a detailed summary. Suffice to say the books revolve around Harry, an orphan boy who, on his 11th birthday, finds out he is a famous wizard, and is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hogwarts is separated into four houses, each named after one of the founders of the school: Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor. Once students arrive at Hogwarts for their first year, the magical Sorting Hat is placed upon their head to choose which house they belong in according to their personality.

Each Hogwarts house has a distinct set of characteristics that it values, along with an interesting historical background. This series of articles features fashion inspired by each of the four Hogwarts houses. After the great response to the HufflepuffSlytherin and Ravenclaw articles, I’m finishing the series with the ever-popular Gryffindor House.

Gryffindor History and Facts

Gryffindor Sorting Hat

  • Founder - Godric Gryffindor, a red-haired, green-eyed wizard known as the best duelist of his time. He left two relics: the Sorting Hat and the Sword of Gryffindor. The Sorting Hat is a hat that he enchanted to sort students into the Hogwarts Houses after the founders passed away. His goblin-made, ruby-encrusted sword was extremely helpful for Harry and his friends when fighting Voldemort.
  • Animal Mascot - Lion
  • Colors - Scarlet and Gold
  • Head of House - Minerva McGonagall, the Transfiguration Professor.

Gryffindor common room Harry Hermione

  • Common Room – The Gryffindor Common Room is located on the 7th floor of one of Hogwarts’ towers. After giving the correct password to the portrait of the “Fat Lady”, you enter through a circular hole in the wall. There are big, comfy scarlet chairs, and a large fireplace is the focal point.  There are often celebrations in the Gryffindor Common Room, for example, after the team wins a Quidditch match.

Do you have what it takes to be a Gryffindor?

Gryffindor crest

Godric Gryffindor, like Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, had a strict set of values that he felt were important for students in his house to possess.  True Gryffindors are brave, courageous, daring and chivalrous.

Gryffindors have nerve, but are sometimes reckless. Those who don’t like the house (mostly Slytherins) think that Gryffindors are arrogant, but this isn’t always true. Because of their traits, most members of Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix belonged to Gryffindor.

Famous Gryffindors

Harry Potter characters - Ron, Hermione, and Harry Potter

  • Albus Dumbledore - one of the greatest Headmasters in Hogwarts’ history, and the only man that Voldemort ever feared
  • Minerva McGonagall - the strict but lovable Transfiguration professor, who is also an Animagus who can turn into a cat
  • Rubeus Hagrid - before he was expelled for a crime he didn’t commit in his 3rd year, the gamekeeper belonged to Gryffindor
  • The Trio – Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger - the main characters of the series
  • Lily and James Potter - Harry’s parents
  • Molly and Arthur Weasley - Ron’s parents
  • Sirius Black – Harry’s Godfather and best friend of James Potter
  • Remus Lupin – the werewolf friend of James Potter, who was also a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry’s 3rd year
  • Peter Pettigrew – friend of Harry’s parents who betrayed them to Voldemort
  • Neville Longbottom – a very good friend of Harry, Ron and Hermione
  • Ginny Weasley - Ron’s little sister and Harry’s love interest
  • Fred and George Weasley - Ron’s older twin brothers who bring humor to any situation
  • Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan, Katie Bell, Dean Thomas, Lavender Brown, Parvati Patil, Seamus Finnigan, Colin Creevey, Dennis Creevey, and Nigel Wespurt - Members of Dumbledore’s Army

Quidditch Match Spectator

Gryffindors have a lot of pride in their Quidditch team, so chances are you’ll want to support your team by going to all of their matches. This outfit would be great for that because it has comfortable and flattering high-waisted shorts, a warm turtleneck, and a comfy cardigan in Gryffindor colors. I included a hat as well, since Godric Gryffindor left a hat as his relic.

Quidditch Match Outfit
Tights- Topshop, Top- Hessnatur, Shorts- Topshop, Shoes- Lori’s Shoes, Hat-, Cardigan- Urban Outfitters

Mrs. Weasley’s Sweaters

It might be just me, but ever since I started reading the Harry Potter books, I’ve longed for one of Mrs. Weasley’s handmade sweaters. Even though it’s impossible for me to get one, the sweater I chose for this outfit is similar enough to feed my craving. The relaxed fit and unique stripes make it stand out from your typical sweater, and if paired with skinny jeans and a large gold lion necklace, you’re sure to look like a true Gryffindor.

Mrs. Weasley's Sweater Outfit
Necklace- Modcloth, Sweater- Modcloth, Shoes- Forever 21, Jeans- Piperlime

Gryffindor Formal

For an occasion that requires a more elegant outfit, I used a gorgeous scarlet dress with a subtle sheen and floral print. Since the Sword of Gryffindor was encrusted with rubies, I made sure to include a ring with a large red gemstone to pay tribute to the important relic.

What do you think?

Are you inspired by Gryffindor and the other Hogwarts houses? Which house do you think you would belong to if you lived in Harry Potter’s world? We want to know what you think, so be sure to leave a comment!

The colors here are the most spot on, esp. the first cardigan. It looks just like the scarf the kids wore in the movie. =D I’m ordering it now haha ~

i love it! but I have to confess,I found the slytherin style the most inspirating, because I just love their colours – green and silver (grey). I have to say, I don´t really like gold and red together, that is just too much. but I do like this article, the gryffindor style has some touch of Oxford here. very british.thank you!

Love the formal! Love the series even more! And if readers haven’t read it, the LAST thing they should do is read a summary! Read the books! They are fantastic!

These outfits are great! My school’s colors are garnet & gold (FSU!) so every time I go to a football game I feel like I’m at Gryffindor haha. I definitely want that striped sweater to wear to a game!

I absolutely love the cardigan in the first outfit. And the boots from the second outfit. But I think your Ravenclaw post was by far the best. But I could be biased since I would be in Ravenclaw.

Hargrid wasn’t in Griffindor… In the fifth book when Ron actually played a good game and Hagrid came to get Harry and Hermione he asked who scored and then he said good when Harry replied that it was Ravenclaw. Oh dear, I just realised I have no life -.-

    January 12th, 2011 at 6:47 pm

I’ve loved this series, so, freat job. However, I feel this post is lacking some Gryffindor boldness. Red and gold are good, but I felt there were so many elements you could have worked with to make it more interesting. However Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were spot on. They totally captured the essence of those houses.

  27. 27
    January 12th, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Favorite of the series. Good job :)

  28. 28
    January 12th, 2011 at 7:16 pm

I agree with TM, these looks are a little too refined for Gryffindor. Gryffindor should have more boldness, and maybe even sex appeal… I like them, I think you just ned more of the vibe and less of just the colors to make a true lion outfit.

    Godric Gryffindor’s relic was a sword…

    January 12th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Looking at this post, I can actually for the first time say that I wish I was in Gryffindor (and I am usually a staunch Ravenclaw). All these pieces were so good. I can’t help but feel that Ravenclaws got ripped off… but great job! :-)

    January 12th, 2011 at 11:34 pm

@Rhea, Hagrid was not saying “good” in reference to Ron not scoring. He said “good” as a general, reply to Harry and Hermione because he was thinking about Grawp in the forest. He wasn’t paying attention to what they were saying. I also have no life, by the way!! :]

    January 14th, 2011 at 12:17 am

What Madison said! Haha, I have no life either. And…. wasn’t the sword of Gryffindor the relic, not the Sorting hat? Yeah. Nerds for the win.

I loved this series of articles. As for Gryffindor, I do like that ‘Oxford’ look which had been mentioned by the comments above. I adore the last set – the formal look.
I thought Hufflepuff had the most adorable outfits and Slytherin was daring and pretty cool. As for Ravenclaw, it was… okay.
I’d probably be in Ravenclaw or Slytherin based on my traits.

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan I have to say I *love* this series! I’ll be honest, I’ve always wished I could slip into the HP world and these posts have allowed me to just that :)
My favorite would have to be Gryffindor (and not just because I consider myself a Gryffindor). I love the ‘Mrs. Weasley’s Sweaters’ outfit. Just looking at it makes me want to relax in the common room or eat up at the burrow (LOL, I have natural red hair too which just makes it all the better.)
My second favorite house outfits in this series would have to be Slytherin- I love the edgier/grunge feel. (My favorite Slytherin outfit would have to be the second outfit- the business one.)
Order of Favoritism: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, then Ravenclaw.
I keep looking back at these outfits for inspiration and I love each and every one of them.
I’m kind of sad the HP house series has to end . . . but thank you so much for this amazing and inspiring series- my favorite so far! Keep up the good work <3

To those saying that Gryffindor’s relic was the sword – While he did leave the sword, he also left the Sorting Hat. The hat said it in one of his songs, that Gryffindor took the hat off of his head for them to use as a way of sorting students. And College Fashion did say that he left TWO relics, the sword and the hat

LOVE this post, LOVE this series! You should do a Narnia one next :)

This series of articles is amazing! My roomate and I are a bit…obsessed with the Harry Potter novels. We are constantly trying to throw our love of the books into our oufits but somehow the crest t-shirts from Hot Topic just didn’t do the trick. We have both tried several inspirations of these outfits (especially Slytherin!) and love it! Thank you for my favorite fashion articles ever written!
