Fashion Inspiration: Ellie from Disney Pixar’s Up

Back in 2009, famed animation companies Disney and Pixar teamed up to create yet another heart-warming film, the now-classic adventure story Up. For those of you who haven’t yet seen the movie, the introduction focuses on an endearing relationship between characters Carl and Ellie, who have been together since childhood. Ellie’s life-long dream is to travel to South America, described in the movie as a land full of mystery and adventure.

Below, I’ve created a series of real-life-wearable looks inspired by the character Ellie. In hopes to not spoil the movie for our lovely readers still wanting to watch it, listed are some key elements to remember in forming your own Ellie-approved outfits, whether you’re planning a trip to a far away place or just to class.

About Ellie

  • Ellie is a very optimistic and upbeat character, so she is seen wearing bright colors and playful patterns throughout her scenes.
  • As I mentioned earlier, Ellie’s dream is to travel to South America. In the meantime, she works at a zoo with exotic animals likely to be found in the Amazon jungles.
  • Ellie can be very girly and feminine while still remaining true to her adventurous side.

Now that you have a brief description Ellie’s personality, scroll down for a series of outfits that channel those key elements of her character.

Dress, Boots, Scarf, Belt, Earrings

This outfit is a wink at Ellie’s uniform at the zoo. Try a safari-inspired army green dress paired with riding boots. Switch out the tie belt with a leather one for a look that’s more Ellie-inspired. A jewel-tone scarf and playful parrot earrings help to finish the outfit.

Outfit inspired by Ellie from Disney Pixar's Up: Yellow Dress, Mary-Janes, camera necklace
Dress, Shoes, Necklace, Earrings

Showing off her more girly side, Ellie dons a series of sundresses when she’s not at work. Snag her adorable look with this gingham printed, sunshine yellow dress that’s perfect for a picnic. Wear it with Mary-Jane wedges for a vintage appeal. Add a cute camera charm necklace and cherry stud earrings before heading to the park!

Outfit 3.

Outfit inspired by Ellie from Disney Pixar's Up: Purple jeans, floral top, TOMS
Top, Pants, Shoes, Earrings, Headband

For her more relaxed look, Ellie wears colorful pants and vibrant print tops. To update this look, try a pair of bright pants with a cute floral crop top. Add black TOMS to keep it comfy and simple, and accessorize with floral earrings and a cute headband. This outfit would be great for spending the day reading about far away places, or maybe traveling yourself!

What do you think?

Have you seen the movie Up? Would you wear any of the looks above? Which one was your favorite? Would you like to see more posts like this in the future?

OH GOSH I LOVED THIS! I really admired how optimistic she was, and loved the ending – (not going to spoil it too), but I think it really showed how wonderful she was and how strong her love. You translated these outfits beautifully, thank you so much!

Yes!! The Disney series is back (well, in a way).

I love Ellie – completely forgot about her. I remember her only in a sad context, so I love that you chose to showcase her style here… shows us how cheerful of a character she is – and why she made the movie what it was!

Also, I really enjoy the idea of her wearing Toms :)

Oooh! This is so great. See, THIS is what fashion inspiration is all about! It’s easy to watch Gossip Girl or An Education and get inspiration – but it’s unconventional films and people like this that I love most.

I really like the third outfit because it’s so fun and PURPLE. The first outfit reminded me that my friend and I had to dress up as Carl and Russel (respectively) for our boat race project in physics back in high school. Our theme was UP so our boat was a house with balloons. :P

I love what Dr Hadley (Thirteen) wears. she usually has a baic tee with jeans and suspenders peaking from under her doctor coat. i’ve been wanting to try out the suspenders but not sure how to pull it together. could you help.

That is a totally inspirational, clever, and beautifully realized idea. Though I’m going back to school (I’m a Junior or something at Colorado State University), I’m 61! The clothes are adorable and right for those newly out of high school, or young, college kids. You just keep being inspired by characters you see-you’re doing great!
