Welcome to CF's series, Trend Watch. From high fashion to street style, we're covering all the latest trends, then showing you affordable ways to rock each look. This column is all about making super-trendy pieces work for the average college girl, so if you have a trend you would like to see featured here, leave a comment and let us know!
The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term "cape" is typically muscular men in tights, a.k.a. superheroes. However, for this week's Trend Watch post, I will approach capes like the fashionable statement pieces they really are. Even Audrey Hepburn was a huge fan of the cape!
Scroll down to find out how I would wear a cape this fall:
The Traditional Cape
The most traditional cape is probably the camel-colored version. It is a classic piece that adds sophistication and a ladylike charm to any outfit. I paired it with a bright red-orange skater skirt, boots, and a black long-sleeved shirt. I love the way the over-the-knee boots complement the cape and match the leather trim on the pockets. Finish the look with a polished black tote bag.
Plaid 'n' Paris
I love how this ensemble uses a non-traditional cape for a look that is more "rocker glam" than "fine lady." For this outfit, pair your favorite black skinny jeans with a statement-making graphic tee. Add a pair of comfortable Chelsea boots and a sleek messenger bag. To achieve that edgy vibe, accessorize with an ear cuff and throw on this gorgeous plaid cape.
Dark And Darker
The last look is very chic yet extremely easy to recreate. Wear your favorite casual dress - I chose one with a blue-and-green print and a Peter Pan collar - and put on a versatile black cape to keep you warm. I also chose to accessorize with a statement necklace and d'Orsay flats for a sophisticated look. This cute handbag matches the dark-colored cape, as well as the dress, and pulls the ensemble together cohesively.
Which of these three outfits is your favorite? Are you as obsessed with capes as me? Will you wear a cape this fall? How would you style it? Remember to tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment!
