Throughout our series on Getting There in Style, I’ve discussed your perfect travel outfit, packing your suitcase, and the carry-on bag essentials no girl should fly without. This week, I want to focus on your most important travel accessory: your suitcase.
When you travel, your suitcase is like your mobile home-away-from-home. It’s the keeper of everything you’ll need until your return. A good suitcase is truly a piece every girl should own when she goes to college.
However, figuring out which suitcase is right for you can be tricky, especially with all the options out there today. In order to ease the process, I’ve put together a few tips for choosing a suitcase, as well as a few different styles of bags, to help.
3 Tips for Choosing a Suitcase
1. Figure out what type of traveler you are.
Usually, the experts will tell you to consider your destination or the length of your vacation to pinpoint your perfect suitcase. However, as a college girl on a budget, you also want to make sure you’ll be able to get multiple uses out of your purchase.
So look at your last several vacations. Where did you go? How long was your trip? What was your favorite destination? Where would you like to go in the future? How much do you typically pack? Use your answers as benchmarks for choosing your ideal suitcase.
2. Do your research.
Once you’ve nailed down your travel needs, do as much research as possible before making your purchase.
Go online and compare different makes, models, brands and styles. Create a list of your favorites and hit up local retailers to see the bags in person. You want to make sure you can physically handle the bag and that it lives up to the information you found on the Internet. You can make your final purchase online, but you should always see the bag in person first if you can.
3. Be willing to invest.
Luggage is an investment. You want to get as many years and vacations out of a suitcase as possible, and you want a bag that is going to hold up through it all.
Of course, good luggage isn’t cheap, and, while a budget is always good, quality is always worth a little extra. Compare prices from store to store and brand to brand, but remember that quality should always come first.
