CBS’ show Elementary, which is on its second season, is a new twist on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Of the recent Sherlock Holmes remakes, including the films with Robert Downey, Jr. and the BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch, Elementary is probably the least traditional portrayal of the books. If you’re a Holmes fan looking for a new take on the series, you should definitely give Elementary a try.
Each character in Elementary has a very particular sense of style, so I’ve put together three outfits inspired by three of the main characters. But before you give them a look, here’s a bit more background on the show:
A Bit About Elementary
The show takes place in New York City, where Sherlock Holmes (played by Jonny Lee Miller), has just moved from London. Holmes is a recovering drug addict just out of rehab, and in order to keep him sober, his wealthy (and distant) father has hired a “sober companion” to provide support in his transition. This sober companion is Joan Watson (Lucy Liu), a former surgeon who moves in with Holmes in order to supervise his recovery.
Holmes soon gets a job as a consulting detective for the NYPD, working under Captain Thomas Gregson. As Holmes helps the police solve crimes around New York City, Watson comes along and is quickly intrigued by his amazing skill for deduction, and a burgeoning partnership begins.
Sherlock Holmes tends to dress casually, often wearing pants or corduroys, wrinkled jackets, oxfords, and plaid scarves. To mimic his style in a wearable way, start with a pair of fitted navy pants and a white blouse (buttoned all the way to the top, just like Sherlock). Add on a gray knit blazer and a pair of beige oxfords. Keep the accessories simple and masculine with a leather belt and a warm plaid scarf.
Joan Watson is also a casual dresser, but she always looks polished and put-together. She often goes for A-line skirts, ankle boots, knit berets, and chic outerwear. To steal her style, start with a flirty printed skirt and a casual tee. Layer on a long, open cardigan and some black tights, then add a pair of black stiletto booties. Accessorize with a sleek pendant necklace and a slouchy beret.
Captain Gregson‘s style may not be very adventurous, but his tried-and-true suit and tie combo always looks professional. To channel his authority for a job or internship, mimic his look with a gray pencil skirt and a classic button-down shirt. Keep it polished and conservative with nude pumps, simple studs, and a sharp pair of glasses. On the way out the door, be sure to grab a sleek double-breasted coat and a black bowler bag.
