Nowadays, the buzzword seems to be aesthetic. Whether yours is trendy-eclectic, downtown-minimalist, or Netflix-and-sweats-chic, everyone has their own. An aesthetic is more than just your personal style choice – although that’s a huge part! It’s all about the vibe you give off, which you can convey through fashion, accessories, and beauty choices, as well as attitude and posture.
If you’re a little lost in the world of aesthetics, or just looking for a way to elevate your own without breaking the bank on a whole new wardrobe, we’ve got easy tips for any college girl to try.
1. Mixing Metals
I love the look of mixed metals. Firstly, what college girl has the means to collect jewelry of only one type?! I don’t know about you, but my jewelry collection consists of 50% gifts, 25% hand-me-downs, 15% flea market finds, and 10% Forever 21. I’ll take what I can get my hands on.
I think mixed metals give off a cool-girl, downtown, and modern look. Try gold studs with silver hoops if you have multiple ear piercings, or stack up rings of different metal families. The possibilities are endless.
2. Stolen from Mom
Some of my favorite pieces are straight from my mom’s closet. A cozy blue sweater, an oversized denim shirt, a (real!) leather moto jacket, a vintage Coach purse. Endless goodies are to be found in the deepest, darkest bins in the basement of your parent’s house. Keep an open mind: just because you and your mom aren’t the same size doesn’t mean you can’t rework old pieces. (This works with your dad’s or even grandma’s pieces, too!)
I love borrowing clothes from my mom because it gives off the genuine, worn-in, vintage aesthetic that places like Urban Outfitters try to copy at a much higher cost to you than what your mom is charging – free.
There’s a new aesthetic hitting the runway as of late, and the good news for you is that you don’t have to buy anything new. Normcore is all about back-to-basics fashion. In other words, everything you already own. Think straight-leg denim, sneakers, plain button-downs, white tees.
Normcore can give off a very casual and minimalist vibe, perfect for the unmotivated among you, so dig out your Gap basics and put your coolest face forward.
4. Statement Makeup
If you’re a makeup gal, identify your favorite signature look — and then amp it up. Whether it’s a sharp retro cat eye, a strong lip, or Kylie Jenner-style coffin nails, any bold beauty look is sure to give off a glam aesthetic. Take what you love and run with it, and you’ll look unique and memorable. What will your makeup “thing” be?
