You know those days – the ones where you roll out of bed (after hitting the snooze button too many times), stumble into your closet, and have no idea what to wear? Our new series, Easy Outfit Formulas, is here to help! Every other week, I’ll feature two items (which you probably already own) that can be paired into outfits for those days when you need some quick and easy inspiration.
This week, we’re going with a classic pairing — cozy sweaters and A-line skirts. Both are basics you should definitely have in your closet, and together, they make a super versatile combo that is perfect for fall.
Want to know how to wear sweaters and skirts this fall? Here are three ways to style this simple formula:
Pretty and Polished
This look is a feminine take on our outfit formula. Start with a pretty printed skirt and a sweater in a solid, contrasting color. Slip on some metallic loafers, as well as a pastel cross-body bag that’s both chic and practical – perfect for a daytime outing.
For jewelry, pick your favorite pendant necklace and a pair of subtle floral studs. Painting your nails a deep black will add an edgy and unexpected contrast. Lastly, a soft milkmaid braid is the ideal hairstyle to top off this outfit!
One Glam Evening
This next ensemble is a fab choice when you want a dressy yet comfy night-out outfit. A black faux leather skirt and jewel-embellished sweater act as the base. Add a pair of sky-high black wedges for drama, then grab a leopard clutch to carry your essentials.
A pair of large statement earrings and set of stackable gold rings will add some eye-catching sparkle. To polish off the look, style your hair in a simple updo and swipe your nails with a deep vampy red polish.

If the weather has a taken a cold turn on campus, here’s a cozy way to style your skirts and sweaters. Start with a graphic sweater and a skirt in a classic fall print, like plaid or houndstooth. Layer on some black tights for warmth, then pair them with lace-up black ankle boots.
Stay extra warm by accessorizing with a mustard scarf and knit beret. Finish off the outfit with a menswear-inspired watch and a coat of frosty silver nail polish.
