Easy DIY rug tutorials for your dorm

This time of year seems like the perfect opportunity to bask in coziness and warm/fuzzy things. Especially because it’s a transitional month from fall to winter where I live. So in the spirit of ultimate comfort and all things cozy, I put together a list of DIY rug tutorials for a comfy and cozy room.

If you didn’t know, rugs are fairly straightforward to make yourself. Yes, they can be time-consuming. But I wouldn’t call them particularly difficult to make.

And you need at least one rug in your college room, no question about it. Rugs are versatile and come in handy for a number of reasons.

  1. Rugs keep your feet warm. Slippers are great, but sometimes going barefoot in your room happens, and a rug can serve as a barrier between you and that icy floor.
  2. They’re easier to clean than carpet or tile. Smaller rugs at least usually just need to be vacuumed every once in a while and thrown in the washing machine on other occasions. So much easier than mopping your floor or shampooing your carpet!
  3. They can tie a room together. A well placed and well chosen rug can bring a whole room together. It can even serve as a statement piece.

If you don’t need a rug yourself, you can always make one as a Christmas present for someone else — just another reason to try these DIYs!

As I mentioned above, making your own rugs is a pretty straightforward process. All of the DIY rugs I listed below can be made fairly easily, though some are more time-consuming than others. You can also do most of these DIYs with your favorite show on in the background to make the project go faster.

1. 5 Easy DIY Rugs

This video is technically five projects in one. These are all pretty simple to complete, so pick your favorite and get started!

I also like how you can customize most of these to fit the color scheme of your room. The towel one would be great if you live in a space with your own bathroom. You could probably use hot glue to put that one together as well.

Pro tip: If you’d like the pom-pom rug to go faster, I’d recommend investing a little into a pom-pom maker, like this $7 one from Amazon.

2. Yarn Shag Rug

This tutorial is extensive, which is good because this one can be a little overwhelming without the right direction. It does seem like a fairly straightforward process once you get it started, though.

I really like the patterns that they added to this one. It adds a sort of whimsical touch to the project and would be such a fun way to add color to your room!

3. Stenciled Jute Rope Rug

This rug is giving me major Anthropologie vibes. It’s also got a really fun summer feel to it.

This would be great if you have a bohemian or tropical theme in your room. However, if you use a stencil you can probably pick one that fits any theme.

This project might be easier with two people as opposed to one, mainly because the gluing will be a longer process with one set of hands.

4. T-Shirt Rag Rug

This tutorial is kind of three separate ideas in one. It includes a circular rug tutorial, how to make t-shirt yarn, and a rug you can make with a loom.

This project is a great way for you to use all of those old t-shirts that you may have accumulated throughout your college experience. I swear I get at least three free t-shirts every year I’m in school. I like free stuff as much as the next college student, but I’m not sure I need 20 shirts that say where I go to school.

If you’re not willing to part with your school shirts, you can always use some old ones you may have stained or ripped, or go to the thrift store and get some for cheap.

5. Rainbow Doormat

This rug is a great way to show your pride or support for the LGBTQ+ community, or just to bring some whimsy into your room. I really like the shape, but I think you could leave it in the rectangular form and just paint on the rainbow using the stencil.

This looks like a really fun thing to do while watching your favorite show — I’m tempted to go out and buy one of these doormats just to have an excuse to make this.

I want to hear from you!

What was your favorite DIY? I really liked the shag rug, but the t-shirt one was pretty cool too. Are you planning on trying any of these DIYs?
