I don’t know about you, but there’s something about late ’90s/early 2000s hits that get me in the summer spirit like nothing else.
This was a time where summer was truly sweet; before we had jobs, before summer classes were a real threat to our mental and emotional well-being, and way before we started to care about things like streaky self tanners and razor burn.
Sit back, relax, pop your collar, and let the songs of your adolescence transport you to a world of flip phones and chunky blonde highlights.
1. “Summer Girls” – LFO
Let’s be honest, would any summer throwback playlist be complete without this song? I like “Summer Girls” because it makes me ask deep and important questions, such as “What is this guy’s deal with Chinese food?” and “Was Paul Revere really that good of a man? What does he have to do with Abercrombie and Fitch?”
2. “Country Grammar” – Nelly
If there’s one thing I know about this song, it’s that I have no idea what it’s talking about. Cocoa Puffs and Range Rovers, maybe? Also, what if his iconic face band-aid was actually concealing a tiny little face, like a Voldemort/Quirinus Quirrell type situation? These are questions that keep me up at night.
3. “Me & U” – Cassie
My 14-year-old self spent countless hours watching this music video on repeat in a sad attempt to memorize parts of Cassie’s scandalous choreography. Thank goodness I didn’t have a table or a microphone stand in my room.
4. “Glamorous” – Fergie
Much like how I learned to spell “beautiful” from Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty, Fergie is 100% responsible for my mastery of the word “glamorous”. Also, isn’t it fun to say “mustache” instead of “Mustang” right around 1:27? Just try it.
5. “Promiscuous” – Nelly Furtado
Am I throwing you off? Didn’t think so.
This is probably my favorite song on this list because it’s pretty perfect for every occasion in life. Driving to the dermatologist to get that weird mole checked out? Yes. Doing squats at the gym? You betcha. Dancing in your underwear while blow drying your hair? Absolutely.
6. “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” – Kylie Minogue
Listening to this song brings back deeply suppressed memories of how I used to make up baton routines in my room (despite never having taken a single baton lesson in my life), but the music video still mesmerizes me because the whole thing is basically one giant wardrobe malfunction.
7. “When The Lights Go Out” – Five
I was only 6 years old when this song came out, but I remember playing it on my Totally Hits CD constantly. Like many boy bands in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Five never really had any hits other than this (with the exception of “Slam Dunk Da Funk”), but “When The Lights Go Out” will remain in our hearts forever.
Bonus points if you remember this iconic scene in Smart House from way back in the day:
