These are the kind of songs you blare while driving around the city with your best friends at 2 a.m. on your way home from a diner. On a sugar rush from milkshakes, as the city lights glitter like fireflies in the distance.
They are the songs you envision yourself listening to whilst in quiet reflection, riding down the street on your bike smiling about warmer days ahead.
These are the songs that capture the magic of summer, where the world is drenched in sunlight and you feel the salty waves of the ocean rushing through your veins. The tracks you listen to when you’re young and high on idealism, and you find yourself flying through time with no intention of ever coming back down.
1. “Ride” by Twenty One Pilots
An upbeat pop/reggae track that will make you feel bubbly and alive.
2. “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire
This is an anthem. Although The Suburbs is, in my opinion, the best album by Arcade Fire, this song will forever have a place in my heart as a standout jam.
3. “Lonely Town” by Brandon Flowers
I am digging the ’80s feel to this track, and the accompanying music video is a perfect fit. The video features a girl dancing around, jamming out to the retro-synth pop tune, and it feels like the opening to a John Hughes movie. Everything– from the candy-colored, saturated lighting to the Walkman– wraps up the feel of staying in on a Friday night, belting along to pop anthems from long ago.
4. “Body Talk” by Foxes
Foxes is the pop princess we all need in our lives. Not only does she have a great voice, she also has killer style! She recently became the face for H&M, so expect to see a lot more from her.
5. “Barcelona” by George Ezra
What a voice. Ezra stretches his vocals out and strums along to a song that is utterly enchanting.
6. “Cucurucu” by Nick Mulvey
This is probably my song of the summer. Mulvey’s vocals and twisty, rustic voice are simply lovely and a treat for the ears. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a huge fan of his debut album First Mind. He is definitely an artist to watch.
7. “Move With the Season” by Temples
This song is layered and has an undeniable sonic resemblance to Tame Impala. The layers and transitions literally create movement, which is probably why the title is so fitting.
It’s a song that feels as though it is meant to be listened to while laying in the sun and eating a popsicle. These psychedelic English-Indie rockers have mastered the retro formula for the perfect summer jam.
8. “Origins” by Tennis
Sweet and summery, this track makes you feel like laying on the beach to catch the last few rays of the season.
9. “I Want To Feel Alive” by The Lighthouse and the Whaler
A pretty song that’s perfect for when summer is slowly fading away. Plus the music video features Holland Roden from Teen Wolf. What’s not to like?
10. “Be Your Shadow” by The Wombats
The Wombats have made a triumphant return with the release of their newest album Glitterbug. This song makes me think of karaoke, where everyone feels content and carefree. People are singing out of tune, arms are wrapped around each other, and everyone jumps up and down in time with the beat.
There is the magic of togetherness during the bridge as the guitar solo whisks everyone away.
