While walking around campus, I’ve noticed that oversized tees and yoga pants still seem to be the staple elements of a college wardrobe. Many students throw on just about anything while running out the door, and understandably so — it’s not always easy to look fashionable. But Frida proves that owning versatile pieces can make this process simpler.
As an ode to the ’90s, her destroyed jeans, off-the-shoulder top, and classic Vans look effortlessly paired. Owning these staple pieces will make you stand out from the crowd without the expense of time or comfort.

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “It’s so hard to say what inspires me because there is so much to choose from, but definitely street styles and ‘Cali-chic’ looks. I think my fashion icons currently are Rihanna, Cailin Russo, Zoë Kravitz, Bella Hadid, and how could I forget Emily Ratajkowski?”
How would you describe your sense of style? “Hmm, I think my style can vary from edgy and sharp to boho and flowy. It depends on the day and how I’m feeling.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I chose this because you can never go wrong with some distressed mom jeans. I have a small torso so a lot of my closet consists of shorter, cropped shirts and high-waisted pants. I love this top because it’s super easy to dress up or down. In this case, I dressed it down with Vans that I wear way too much, but I think look good with almost anything.”
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Step out of your comfort zone! It’s so boring to wear what everyone else is wearing so I definitely suggest putting your own spin on trend[s].”
What are your favorite trends and designers right now? “Definitely earthy tones. Whites and blacks and greys are super simple but easy to dress up and make a statement. Alessandro Michele for Gucci is definitely at the top of my list. In 2017, he has mastered denim and basic embroidery, and I wish I had thousands of dollars to drop on Gucci pieces.”
What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I love to write. I’ve been working on a short story which I hope flourishes into something good. I’m really excited to finish it.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be and why? “Most definitely Rihanna’s. She is a badass queen with unsurmountable class!”
Elements of Frida’s Style
1. Slip-On Shoes
Frida’s sneakers steal the show. She rocks some classic checkered Vans which give her a skater-girl vibe. The playful check pattern can be worn with practically anything. It definitely adds edge to an everyday look.
2. Light-Wash Denim Jeans
Everyone seems to be raving about high-waisted, light-wash jeans and it’s easy to see why. Worn-in jeans are functional, comfy, and classic – what’s not to love? Frida decided to mix it up by cuffing the bottoms which sharpen her look to perfection.
3. Off-the-Shoulder Top
Off-the-shoulder shirts are a full-blown trend, especially as we head into warmer months. A body-conscious off-shoulder top looks great with loose fit jeans, creating a perfectly balanced look.
What a cutting-edge ‘do! Literally, Frida’s lob (long bob) hair cut is edgy and can look good on anyone. This style makes your hair so easy to work with. The length is long enough to style in an updo and the blunt, symmetrical ends make it easy to maintain.
