Throughout the ages, nature has served as a source of creative inspiration. Taking a cue from the wintry sky and slushy snow, Nhung’s outfit features textured grays and warm pieces, perfect for the new year.

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “A lot of characters from TV shows inspire my style. I live in New York City so a lot of people walking around, strangers, and neighborhoods inspire my style more. I really like downtown looks, so Greenwich Village, and celebrities like Suki Waterhouse.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “It depends on the season. Summer, I feel, is all white all the time and then [in] fall and winter [I wear] a lot of dark colors.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “Right now I’m visiting home and I only have enough room in my suitcase for clothes that I want to leave here, so I’m pulling from a lot of my old stuff in my closet. So I only brought, like, two wearable outfits with me! But this is comfortable and it fits my typical winter color scheme.”
What fashion advice would you give others looking to improve their style? “I would say to really just put yourself out there and have fun with it. Don’t be scared to mix and match patterns and colors and don’t put too much thought into it. Go with what feels natural.”
What are your favorite trends right now? “I really like tulle and sheer, black, lacy things. And dressing slip dresses up or down with t-shirts and flannels or letting things be a little more sexy.”
If you had an unlimited amount to splurge on one fashion item, which would you choose? “Just one? I’m such a huge shoe person so I would probably say the boots version of the Valentino studded flats.”
What do you do for fun? Do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I just go to museums a lot because it’s what I study and I read a lot about art because I work at a gallery.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “I’d say Suki Waterhouse.”
Elements of Nhung’s Outfit
1. Knitted Sweater
With acid-washed skinny jeans from Topshop and a sweater from Urban Outfitters, Nhung stays true to her gray color palette and adds a trendy touch with the sweater’s cropped hemline. Although the sweater and jeans share a similar color palette, the various textures play off each other and add variety to an otherwise neutral look.
2. Embellished Booties
I’m a huge fan of statement shoes and Nhung’s studded boots add an element of edge while complementing her understated outfit. I want to challenge you to take 2017 as an opportunity to step outside your footwear comfort zone, whether it’s with heels, embellishments, or even bright shoelaces. Shoes with an extra “oomph” can go long way to add that final touch to bring an outfit together.
3. Delicate Rings
Even if you prefer keeping your outfits on the minimalist side, adding a handful of rings is a great way to add a little understated sparkle to any ensemble. Nhung’s rings come from Urban Outfitters, as well as an internship with jewelry designer Ayaka Nishi. Take inspiration from her and mix high and low with your jewelry – the quirky vibe will help you stand out.
