Winter not only brings icy weather; it can also inspire ultra-cool fashion statements. The cool temperatures sweeping across the south called Amani to pull out the warmest fabrics from the corners of her closet. Given their classic street style vibe, though, they could just as easily have been pulled from the streets of New York or London.
Let’s meet Amani and learn about her sense of style!

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “Celebrities, TV shows, and fictional characters all inspire my wardrobe. Specifically the TV show A Different World and the character Whitley Gilbert. Since the show takes place in the ’90s, the character usually wears modest pieces with grungy colors, which is completely my style.”
Where do you like to shop? “I like to go to thrift stores because the trends I like date back to the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. They also [have] versatile pieces [that help me with] saving money as a college student. As far as brands go, H&M has a mix of basics and trendy pieces that can make up an essential wardrobe.”
How would you describe your sense of style? “I like to be quirky but demure. I want to look put-together but still eye-catching.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I got the coat for Christmas, so I wanted to try it. It is cold outside so I paired the coat with a turtleneck sweater and black jeans that complement the blue pattern while keeping me warm. I chose the boots because they add edge which is what this simple outfit needed.”
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “When you see something that you like when shopping, just give it a try. Don’t be afraid to be yourself in what you wear. Fashion is subjective, so it doesn’t matter what people think of you.”
What are your favorite trends right now? “I like the fishnet under jeans [style], velvet, off-the-shoulder tops, and basically anything that is 90’s-inspired.”
Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “Dolce and Gabbana’s new collection – fall/winter 2017 – is fierce. Even the menswear makes me want all of their pieces. They incorporate all my favorite trends and even had Avan Jogia walk on the runway this year which I thought was cool.”
What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I enjoy drawing and I am trying to learn how to animate again. It was a past hobby that I lost time for but I’m trying to pick it up again.”
If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be and why? “I would raid Rihanna’s closet because her outfits say ‘I don’t care what you think’ and her clothing items are empowering.”
Elements of Amani’s Outfit
1. Wool Coat
What better way to pull together an outfit than with a coat that’s all about the details? Amani’s outerwear adds dimension to her look with its plaid pattern and heavy knit texture. The subtle light blue complements her solid grey clothing.
Today Amani casually rocks some Ray-Bans that transition in the sunlight. They add a touch of character and originality to her look while framing her face. Not to mention, the inside of her glasses have a hint of orange that flatter the light blue detailing on her coat.
3. Studded Boots
Another notable piece are Amani’s grungy boots from Steve Madden. She is confident in these studded beauties as she slays on her way to class.
