Would You Wear… Suspenders?

Drew Barrymore in suspenders and suspenders at Rag & Bone
For this week’s edition of Would You Wear?, let’s discuss one of the newest Hollywood fashion trends.. suspenders. Drew Barrymore was photographed in LA wearing a pair of suspenders last week, and her look has caused a fashion controversy. Everyone I’ve talked to either loves this look or hates it.
Now I want to get your take – what do you think of suspenders? Would you wear them? If so, how?

I stole a pair of my dad’s suspenders awhile ago but have yet to wear them outside… I do like the look (not particularly the way drew is wearing them) but to be honest, they usually look best on flat-chested models because they sit the same way they would on a man… I think the addition of boobs causes problems, I can never get them to sit quite ‘right’!
Luna
I would… depending on whether I had the right pants and shirt to go with it. I thin the model on the right looks really good. However Drew’s look isn’t really something I’m into.
sunshower
i absolutely would! i’d keep it classic, like crisp white shirt, jeans and black flats, the “androgynous” look. i think the way drew wore them was more of a misstep…
Dev
it’s a tough look to pull off sometimes, but i like it!
Caity
Not for me, but I think suspenders would look great on like an androgynous look, or with like menswear inspired clothing. I can think of lots of ways this would look cute, but I feel like I’d just look too butch wearing it myself!
Linda
If I looked like the girl on the right, hell yeah :)
Aileen
yes :) So Annie Hall, don’t you think?
Jenny
Hell yes. Unisex office wear for the win.
Jenny
Oh, and a really good example of how to wear this would be Analeigh from America’s Next Top Model cycle 11 in the 2nd to last episode. Sooooooooooo cute. (My fave show, can ya tell?)

only if my first name was Steve and my last was Urcle….
and if I had male parts

I almost got some a few months ago. This isn’t really a new trend though (check flickr). But I was worried they wouldn’t look right on me… plus people where I live aren’t that big on fashion type risks… I’d feel self conscious.
I think the people knocking Drew’s look don’t realize that her outfit would look amazing if it were on a model. It’s all about body shape (unfortunately) and confidence.
Lyssa
I love suspenders! But i look awkward in them because I have large breasts. It’s not a new trend, they’ve been around forever, but I do think if you’re going to wear them you need to tuck your shirt in.
Debz
I think they’re a great way to exaggerate the androgynous look! Saying that, if you’re not very slender and boyish you might struggle a bit more.
charlotte
I don’t think I would. It’s not really my style. If they would look good with the outfit then I might consider it.
J-Emma
Well this trend has been around forever it seems like, but I would wear them. I’m skinny so it doesnt look too strange, but you just have to pair it with the right pieces.
M said it best- you just have to wear what looks good on you, don’t just follow trends like a lemming.
Brittany
I don’t like the way Drew is wearing them. They are pulling her shirt up in the front a little. But the model who is wearing them with her shirt tucked in looks so good. However, I wouldn’t personally wear them but she looks awesome!
Michelle
I love suspenders, but Drew is wearing them with the wrong shirt in this instance. A simple tee shirt of a button down, like the picture in the runway is great. The outfit that Drew is wearing makes her look bulky and shapeless.
Jenn
Never thought I would wear suspenders until I tried on a skirt w/ suspenders from the sale rack in UrbanOutfitters and loved it! It all depends on the outfit and the person in order to pull it off.
Erica
Hell to the no.

This is a cute trend, not a new trend, it has been around for sometime. I would strongly consider wearing it for myself because I dont think it would work well with a large chest.
I hate the way barrymore is wearing it. I mean she looks a little untidy around the neck, like you just want to walk up to her and say “excuse me let me fix that for you”
But you know what what I really want to say is WTF is she wearing that shirt for. She looks like a 6 yr old. t who was playing outside and ran in the house looking a mess.

Alex
Probably not…I don’t think I can pull it off.
Lyd
suspenders…hmm….. maybe on pinafore dresses is ok….
MArianne
yyea with the right shirt of course
reed
no. i think feminine is a better look…
amber
i think it looks better on flat models than real females. but either way, i am not crazy about it. it makes you look smart, but that’s all. it doesnt really bring out your best features – i mean, you can look skinny in so many other clothes, but announcing to the world that “hey, look, i am flat”? no thanks.
e
aww so cute! it’s nerdy-chic in a quirky way.
Suraiya
I totally agree with amber. it looks better on flat models that actual curvy females. I just find it to be a fad right now, same with the fedora thing. But I really don’t think its going to stick around .

Last year, I went out with some of the girls I lived with and one of them wore suspenders. They looked good on her because she has a small, petite frame and was able to pull them off. As we were walking out of our building, some really drunk girl stopped my roommate and asked, “Are you going to an 80’s party?” My roommate turned right back around and change, as she wasn’t uncomfortable wearing them in the first place. Although they looked good on my roommate, I don’t think they would look good on me.
MArianne
Reed , just to respond to ur post they can be veryyy feminine it s all about how you wear them , last week for ex i wore short s with a tight blouse and suspenders and heels and trust me they looked very very feminine
on the other hands if you’re going to wear them with baggy pants and a luce shirt you will end up looking like a tom-boy that s for sure
Anything can look feminine or not depending on how you wear it and with what
Too much of everything is a disaster , showing too much cleavage for example will look trashy not feminine too much fashion items will make you look like a fashion victim …it s all about moderation

Yes yes yes! My entire sorority got red suspenders to wear, and they are adorable! I wear them with skinny jeans, heels and a tank top. They’re totally chic, and look great when worn right. Just make sure that the straps are loose enough that they aren’t pulling your pants up- not a good look.
Miley
Yes, I love them. I’ve been wearing them since the beginning of fall and they are so adorable. I love mixing masculine pieces with feminine ones.

I’ve been wearing suspenders for years now. It is not only a trend for me, but also a way to keep your pants up and always look like properly dressed up.
I’m long and thin so wear them most of the time on high waisted pants. Sometimes I show them, but not systematicaly. What I like is just feel them on me, under cardigans or waistcoats.
it looks like Drew is wearing them for functional reasons, the model looks funny because she wears both belt ans suspenders, it’s then only an esthetical thing.
Me I try both.
L-B
Absolutely.
Erin
I agree that Drew should tuck her shirt in, but that’s not the only thing ruining her look. See at the neckline, and also the way her chest looks, she is wearing a sports bra underneath that t-shirt and it’s making her chest an unflattering shape. I don’t think that busty girls need to stay away from the suspenders, but I think that whoever wears them needs to have the appropriate foundation garments underneath to make them lay right on her chest.
aish
looks kinda funny
but the runway model looks nice(but thats their job…to rock anything)

@Nicole: Suspenders are scary to wear! I understand what your roommate must ahve been feeling. To be called out like that, no matter how good you look, is a confidence crusher.
I DO in fact own suspenders and I love the way I look in them. it took me a few weeks after my purchase to work up the confidence to wear them in public, but when I did I got lots of interested stares, compliments, and some definite approval from guys–even jock types. I have a flat chest, am slender, tall, and yet have wide hips and a larger butt. I usually don’t know how on EARTH to show off my uncommon figure… but suspenders? make me feel great.
to every slightly androgynous/flat chested girl out there, TRY SUSPENDERS!
