Would You Wear… Purple Hair?

Most of the time, trends catch on after runway exposure, but occasionally, celebrities are the trend-setters. When it comes to purple hair, the latter is the bona fide truth.

From Katy Perry and Kelly Osborne to Nicole Richie and Christina Aguilera, Hollywood’s elite are dying their locks various shades of purple. Even Lauren Conrad (sort of) got in on the trend with her recent April Fool’s joke!

Celebs aren’t the only ones with stars in their eyes for lavender locks; they are showing up frequently in real life, too! Kelly Osborne has demonstrated how well purple hair works in everyday life over a long period of time, and we think it’s a look that us students can easily replicate. Not to mention, it’s the perfect way to add a little spring spunkiness into your wardrobe.

Hesitant to commit? Just try chalking your tresses for a fun weekend look that washes out by Monday morning class. Want to go all out? We did a purple hair streak tutorial a few years back that explains the process for a more permanent purple.

Yes, yes and YES! I’ve actually tried it 2 or 3 years ago and I loved it even though it wasn’t as bright as I wanted it to be. Now, I would love to have it again but I study Political science so it’s not really a good choice, eh? Haha

I love purple/lilac hair! Don’t know if I’m brave enough to do it just yet but it’s definitely a trend I enjoy.

So cute how only white girls are featured! Very inclusive!

I have lavender hair and I always go back to it. It is high maintenance thought not necessarily a long commitment depending on the brand of dye you use.

LOL at Liz. Nicole Richie is black and she’s the center of the post…

I’ve wanted purple hair in just about any shade since I was in middle school. Of course, back then my mom said no, but now that I’m older nothing’s standing in my way…

@Marissa: as a racial/ethnic minority, you get used to all the articles and pictures being largely white and/or light skinned. I understand where Liz was coming from with these pictures because every picture shows a light skinned person, even if nicole richie is black, it took a few seconds to be able to see that in the example photo. when every article is catered to white/light skinned people (such as the suggestion to use hair chalk, which doesn’t really work on black (the color) hair), it’s not that far of a leap to assume all of the pictures are of white people.

Why does everything have to be a race issue? Why are you so easily offended? She probably just picked good examples on easily recognizable people. It annoys me and I’m not “white”.

As to the hair color, love it! I would totally try this.

oh, also, I find this post amusing because I currently have purple in my hair (I’ve had it for four months at this point) just because I love purple :D

I’m not offended, just trying to provide an explanation…

I had plum colored hair for a while in high school. Been there, done that. :p

This is so funny. My hairstylist convinced me to go purple 3 weeks ago. I wasn’t sure but she was all like, “It’s about to be a huge trend! And it’ll look really good on you!” She was right, on both fronts. Not only did she give me a look that worked for me, but she also made me look like a trend-setter. :)

No way. I’m not Katy Perry. I’m need to look professional, not like a child who got paint in her hair.

Annie Clarke (of St. Vincent) was the first I saw recently with purple hair, and it looks terrific on her. It’s like a pale lavender…almost grey. Very cool.

I had purple streaks done about a year ago. It can be really pretty but upkeep is terrible. The dye doesn’t last very long and I had to keep getting it redone every few months because it faded so quickly.
