Would You Wear… Pasties?

Rihanna wearing pasties

Summer fashion is always about showing a little skin, but is this new celebrity look taking it waaay too far?

Fashion trendsetter Rihanna stepped out over July 4th weekend wearing star-shaped pasties under a black blazer with nothing else underneath. She paired the look with sequined silver pants and statement earrings, but the pasties were obviously the focus.

Personally, her outfit makes me cringe. While I normally love Rihanna’s style, I can’t imagine what she was thinking when she decided to wear this! Pasties don’t count as clothing in my book, and should NEVER substitute for putting a shirt on. This look is way too revealing. Even Rihanna (who has a perfect body) can’t pull this off, so there’s no way it would work on a normal person. This one gets a huge thumbs down from me.

So what do you think? Would you ever wear pasties like Rihanna, or are you with me in thinking this look is trashy with a capital t? Do you think pasties can ever work in an outfit? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

When I saw the title of this post, I KNEW these pictures would be on here. Lol.

This look is not good. At all. I would never go out wearing only an open blazer and pasties. Way too trashy.

Maybe at a very wild costume party? Hahaha if I were about 300 000 000 times more comfortable with my body?

    Probably not, actually.. haha

OH SICK!!!! [in a i just threw up in my mouth way]
definitely not a good look – not now or ever

    No Way Jose!
Also, since when does one celebrity parading around in next-to-nothing constitute a trend? I thought “trend” implied that more than one person wore the thing within a few days/weeks of one another.
Maybe if you don’t like getting dressed, this is alright. Personally, I think it’s far sexier to keep your parts IN your clothes. The look is only fit for a “clothing optional” party.

Rebecca – Haha, I could maaaybe see it being alright at a costume party! That’s probably it, though.

Alycia – Yup, thankfully it’s not a trend. I didn’t use the word trend anywhere in the article, although I did call Rihanna a trendsetter… maybe that’s what had you confused?

That’s just really disgusting. I think anyone who tries to wear this should be arrested for public nudity. Hahaha!

pasties should be worn under clothes… not AS clothes… Soo Lil Kim 1999

Pasties are only okay on showgirls. Period.

Obviously these pics sparked this post….they’ ve been all over fashion blogs for days now.

I was really embarrased when i opened this website in front of my brother. It’s gross and I would never wear it.

This trend is best left for strippers maybe? haha

    July 7th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

    cringe cringe cringe

definitely not doable in real life… the only way I can see it working is MAYBE at a wild costume party type setting like others said earlier, or you know like in a theatre production or some other art form where that kind of look isn’t innapropriate or trashy.

Emma – I added a NSFW warning to the post! Sorry it embarrassed you when it popped up – I didn’t think it would be a big deal to post the pics because she’s not actually nude. But now you have to click to see them. Sorry again!

  18. 18
    July 7th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

I mean, I’m not a prude or anything, and I like bold fashion statements…but pasties? Really? NOT clothes. No matter how cutely shaped, or sparkly, or whatever. Rhianna should cover up.

  19. 19
    July 7th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

OMG! Eeewww… that’s not even clothing! What happened, Rihanna? D:

  20. 20
    July 7th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

I think this look is cute…if your a stripper. This look actually reminds of one of those futuristic movies where the women are all wearing short spandex skirts and bras as shirts and go-go boots. haha

  21. 21
    July 7th, 2009 at 9:30 pm

    not classy!

    only if you’re a burlesque dancer…

  23. 23
    July 7th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

I was supremely uncomfortable wearing only pasties under a halter top once… this is painful just to look at.

Oh, Rihanna… always out to prove something.

  24. 24
    July 7th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Funny how I thought pasties were always worn on strippers, women maybe who jump out of cakes at bachelor parties, etc..? Could also look really hot to a b/f, hubby, etc.. if you danced around the house in some pasties and a gstring?
But, out to the family pic-nic? NOPE! WTH was she thinking? I will say, she is from an exotic island so maybe it just isnt as big a deal there. I just dont ever see that looking attractive, and my hubby saw it and first thig out of his mouth was “that is really skanky”. nuff said.

  25. 25
    July 7th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

P.S. Anyone remember Lil Kims pasty at the MTV music awards a few years ago? Wasn’t cute then either. Some things just don’t work on anyone.

  26. 26
    July 8th, 2009 at 12:10 am

THis is hilarious I can’t believe some one would do that on purpose… on the plus size she has a very nice body! jealous

  27. 27
    July 8th, 2009 at 12:20 am

Definitely not. Too trashy for me.

  28. 28
    July 8th, 2009 at 12:39 am

I would never wear it …
I thought Lady Gaga’s pasties were ‘cool’ (well, something I expect from her, and different … ) with the X’s, but I didn’t assume others would follow suit. Lady Gaga has a unique style that is fairly out there, and I think she can pull stuff like this off, but for other people I think if they want to tape their boobs, that’s fine … just don’t let it show.

As much as I usually love Rihanna’s style, I do NOT like this outfit/style choice … it doesn’t suit her.

  29. 29
    July 8th, 2009 at 12:51 am

First, let me stop laughing. Rihanna is a freaggin HAM, she’ll wear anything but a paper bag… and maybe if Beyonce does it first, she will.

Leave it for the classless celebrities, but normal people should not wear pasties unless their job requires such.

  30. 30
    July 8th, 2009 at 1:49 am

Wow, everyone is making such a big deal about this…
I think she’s hot. Her body is amazing and if she wants to walk around in pasties, then thats cool. I mean it’s not like she’s naked!
Idk, maybe its cause I’m from LA and I’m used to seeing people walking around town in barely there bikinis and topless…. But i really don’t think it’s “disgusting” or “gross” like some of the girls above me said.

However, I would definitely advice the general public to STAY AWAY from this trend. Not only because the general public does not have the body to pull this off, but also because this is one of those trends that should be left to celebrities… it does not translate to the average person walking down the street.

And no, i personally would NOT wear this.

  31. 31
    July 8th, 2009 at 5:15 am

Eh, I don’t think this look is ‘disgusting’, but definately not to be worn.
Maybe for burlesque dancers, strippers, or that special summat for your bf behind (safely-locked) doors, but nooo, Rihanna, not in public DX

Pasties cover like .. what, two square inches of your boobs?

  32. 32
    July 8th, 2009 at 6:03 am

I’ve actually thought about wearing pasties with a (very)low cut dress when i didn’t have any double sided tape left. But not with the intentions of my boobs saying “hi” to everyone who looks my way. I wanted to wear the pasties as a backup so that i’d know that no one could see my nipple if i bent forward or something like that.

I don’t agree with the pasties-out-in-the-open…not even for a celebrity. You have to draw the line somewhere.

She’s just as wrong as Lil kim at the VMA’s (and you know Kim was wrong!)

  33. 33
    July 8th, 2009 at 10:43 am

    No way! Never!

Poor Rihanna, she looks so sad. I think she’s sort of lost some self-respect cause of this crazy Chris Brown thing. Sad.

  34. 34
    July 8th, 2009 at 11:30 am

    No….that’s just wrong.

  35. 35
    July 8th, 2009 at 11:46 am

She seems to be in a very bad mood in those pictures. I wonder if the stickers would look better had she smiled and carried on the edgy look with the sense of humor it evokes.

Most often than not, it is all about the spirit with which you pull things off…

  36. 36
    July 8th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

ew! that looks so disgusting….how can you leave your house or whatever and think that looks good..i wonder what people said if she asked “does this look okay?”

  37. 37
    July 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

    Strippers could totally rock this.
    So could pole dancers.
    Everyone else, big. fat. NO!!!!

    July 8th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

    Nasty.

  39. 39
    July 8th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Ugh, horrid. i would wear pasties, when a bra wasn’t an option under a dress or something, but never as a replacement as a top. Too trampy! She looks like she belongs in a playboy centerfold, or in a strip club on stage.

  40. 40
    July 8th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I would never where that out of the house! I could understand wearing it under something but not alone! It’s just bad.

  41. 41
    July 9th, 2009 at 12:21 am

halloween is the only day i would ever wear or want to see anyone wearing this… and even on halloween i dont think i would wear that… save some room for the imagination!

  42. 42
    July 9th, 2009 at 6:18 am

    no way…
makes her breasts looke like they’re sagging…eeewwww
reminds me of tribal women..or something…totally not urban

  43. 43
    July 9th, 2009 at 10:36 am

A big NO-NO. I saw a woman wear this in a TV-show, but she was acting as some kind of showgirl-mermaid thingy, swimming in a tank full of water for a show… this trend is for showgirls, definitely..

Perhaps Rihanna banged her head when she decided to wear it. -_-a

  44. 44
    July 9th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

    Ista: agreed.

  45. 45
    July 10th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I would not wear this trend but I don’t agree with the comment above that says that this trend would only be good for celebrities because “the general public does not have the body to pull this off.” I just don’t think that because someone is a celebrity means that they have better bodies than the “general public.” I know plenty of people who have way better bodies than some celebrities. Either way I don’t think anyone should wear it in public!

  46. 46
    July 12th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

oh rihanna! what were u thinking? never EVER should ANYONE sport this look.

  47. 47
    July 12th, 2009 at 5:47 pm

After that horrible thing with chris brown, rihannas style seems to be just getting worse, remember that weird jacket with the massive shoulder pads? She needs to stop proving a point and start wearing decent clothes again (:

  48. 48
    July 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am

this look is so tragic I can only ask Rihanna, “What were you thinking?“ .
No One..but No one should EVER wear pasties as clothing in public. I mean celeb or not…it is just not socially acceptable, not to mention a huge crime against fashion

  49. 49
    July 16th, 2009 at 12:07 am

i personally like them. she took a risk-even if some people thinks she fails by wearing them-but it was her ~very daring choice~ how can anyone say its not fashion? if your wearing it-its fashion, just because its different doesnt make it bad. i like it and i think we all should be more daring with fashion.

wearing the same things all the time=BORING!

    ~praise to all the trendsetters~

i usually like what rihanna wears bcz she has a style and an edge but this is different it is way too Trashy and should be counted as vulgar instead of stylish and obviously she is not pulling it off :P

  53. 53
    August 4th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Ugh, what was she thinking?? This is a trashy look and by NO means is it stylish.

  54. 54
    August 5th, 2009 at 6:50 am

I think eventually, if these revealing trends like crop tops and ripped jeans continue, society will go back to prehistoric style and everyone will end up walking around naked. This is evidently the next step! Urgh, it’s not even thinkable that anyone should walk around wearing these. They’re designed to avoid embarrassment when wearing revealing clothes…not cause embarrassment by revealing everything!!!

She looks like she just stepped out of a brothel. Definitely not acceptable.

I love it. I think it’s very bold and fresh. I would wear this, but not every day on the sidewalk of course. You need the right occasion. She totally pulls it off this style, and it’s very hip right now with the rise in popularity of burlesque.
