Would You Wear… Overalls?

Overall Trend Street Style

Every spring, overalls try to make a comeback. It usually lasts a short amount of time before they’re forgotten. The reason? They’re usually too strange of a blast-from-the-past to become a fixture in one’s regular wardrobe cycle.

But this year, it seems different. Aside from being seen on various runways, brands like Madewell and Citizens of Humanity have their own versions in growing popularity. Personally, I’ve noticed this trend taking over FIDM’s campus. Girls are wearing them cuffed and with wedges, American Apparel bandeaus and vests. They’re seen as ultra-hip this spring in a rugged, All-American way.

Designers are also coming out with overalls made from silks, in floral prints and other more feminine materials. This might make them more wearable, but I must warn, when done improperly they can look like a bad ode to the 1990s.

Overalls seen at Rachel Comey, on Katie Holmes and Ralph Lauren.

So will you be rocking overalls this spring?

…or is this a trend that’s best left in the ’90s? Do you think that this is a hip look that you’ll be wearing? How would you wear it? Leave a comment and let’s discuss!

Personally I don’t think I’ll be partaking in this trend. I like the look on some other people, but in general it’s not really for me – it makes me think of farming too much for my taste! Not that there’s anything especially wrong with that, it’s just not my style at all.

I’m not sure about the longer overalls, I think that they look good if theyre put together correclty, but I’m a huge fan of shorts that are overalls, i think they’re super cute and comfy, like rompers.

i agree with andrea, i love overalls with shorts on the bottom. i’d be a little hesistant to wear them right now, but if i’m not the only person on my campus wearing them i’ll totally do it. i love rompers too, which i consider pretty related

I’ve been pulling off the overalls look for a number of seasons now. So I just feel everyone else is late.

have to agree with andrea & kelly, shorts are much more easy to pull of, longer overalls just don’t look goond on most of people

Overalls remind me of moms. And mom butts. So no, I’m not a fan of this trend at all.

I bought a pair of overalls last fall for gardening and such, but I don’t think I’d wear it outside of that. Unless I cut them into shorts, but I’m not sure about doing that just yet.

as I am a 19-year old who looks like a 14-15 year old, i do not plan on trying this fashion out. because then i’ll be a 19-year old who looks like a 10 year old :/

I wore overalls in my awful 6th grade school photo…. don’t think I need to relive that. I think the thing that separates my dislike of overalls from my adoration of jumpsuits is the denim factor :/

no, no, i dont think i liked them as a child & i still dont like them. I just dont think i have what it takes to pull the look off.

Nope. Seems too contrived, although the colored ones are a little teeny bit better than denim ones!

Maybe I just had too many traumatic schoolyard wedgie experiences. Never ever again.

I love overalls! I will definitely be wearing these this summer. I never really wore them as a kid, but my aunt would wear them and she looked soooo cool in them . Hahahahah. Hopefully I’ll be able to wear them the same way. ^_^

Oh man… Please leave these things in the 90’s. The only exception? Small children–they are so adorbs in overalls :)

I think this trend is being pushed a little due to its similarity to one piece jump suits and rompers. but I agree, the overall look is very difficult to pull off without looking childlike or farmer like.

I think they’re impossible to wear without getting flashbacks of 1990’s recess!

    No. Just no.

I have never been into this trend, except for little kids like others said.

The exception… if they’re shorter, not denim…. wait those are rompers!

Even rompers make me look childish though so… I’m going to pass on this one.

Hmm, I don’t think I would wear it. It looks somewhat good when it is shorts at the bottom, but otherwise… Don’t think so. :)

I’m not sure if I would or not I think it could be great on some people, but if I did wouldn’t know how to style them to look non-frumpy…any ideas?

I am obsessed with overalls! Maybe it’s because I’m a 90s kid, but even now I can’t get enough of them! I finally found the perfect pair of short overalls at Goodwill a while back and they were basically the same ones I had in 8th grade. I also have some cool gauze embroidered ones from the 70s that are beyond cool!

    a) They don’t look good on ANYONE.
    b) It’s not the ’90s anymore.
    c) I’m assuming the people who read this blog aren’t 5.

Ugh, overalls remind me of what my mom used to force me to wear in the 90s. I say boo to overalls.

I like them! I’ve been wanting them back for years. They’re cute, fun and bring back memories of the simpler days. They also come in so many ways that its easy to find something that will suit your body type. The best pair I’ve seen was a dark wash skinny capri pair.

I am a 68 year old jewelry designer. I think overalls can be the basis for a really great funky look. Depends on what you pair them with. I got excited by the Ralph Lauren ads and finally found a pair of Citizens of Humanity on line, which arrived today. I love them. I never worry about “age appropriate.” I just wear what I love.
