Would You Wear… Ombre Hair?

Wearable gradients have been popular on clothing for a few seasons now, but the trend has recently crossed over into the beauty world. Ombre hair is a chic look for fall, spotted on celebs, runway models, and fashionistas of all types.

This take on hair color is easier to keep up with (and afford!) than your average dye job (which normally requires hitting the salon every six to eight weeks).  This look is also much lower maintenance than most unnatural hair colors. Some complain that the ombre look appears sloppy and unkempt, but others see its ruggedness as part of its appeal.

The dark-roots-to-pale-ends look can be as natural or drastic as you want. A subtle look like Rachel Bilson’s (above) is more natural than Lady Gaga’s platinum-to-yellow ombre ‘do or Ashlee Simpson-Wentz’s brown-to-red style (below). Personally, I love that this trend is versatile enough to work for any girl with any hair color.

What do you think of ombre hair?

Now I want to know your thoughts on this new beauty trend! What do you think about the faded-to-light look? Do you see sloppy roots or an edgy new trend? Would you rock it? If so, would you go more natural or all-out? Leave a comment with your thoughts!

I think if you are going to do this trend you have to go all out and do like Ashley Simpson or else you are just going to look like you are too cheep and lazy to get your roots fixed.

I think the ombre hair looks good on Ashlee Simpson but not for other people .

I think it always just looks like bad roots.

I absolutely think it just looks like you’re too broke or lazy to get your hair colored, on anyone.

I love this look- so bohemian and carefree. I’m seriously considering trying out the ombre trend (if I can convince my stylist first- she abhors it). I just don’t have the funds to spend on platinum blonde upkeep anymore. I love Whitney Port’s ombre color with the loose waves- super cute!

I think it looks better when it’s bold and intentional. Doing it subtly just makes it look like you’re lazy and that your ends are fried. I’m all about the gaga platinum to yellow.

I really don’t like it for myself and only think that Drew looks okay because it is so subtle. but to each her own!

I think ombre hair just reminds me of the whole chipped nail polish trend…To me, even if it’s trendy, it still says “laziness”…If you’re going to colour your hair (or paint your nails), why not make it look polished?

And I DEFINITELY do not like how it looks on Ashlee Simpson :(

LOL. this is all cause of the recession guys.

Well, now I can put off touching up my roots for a few months! ;)

I definitely think it depends on how well it’s done. If you’re gonna try this trend, you have to go all out with it.

I don’t mind Drew’s or Whitney’s… I have dirty blonde hair (maybe a bit darker than Drew’s) that gets really blonde in the summertime (and I don’t dye it), so that’s just how it naturally grows out. If I start to see a really defined line between natural color and sunbleached, I might throw in a few highlights, but that’s about it. It’s not that I’m lazy so much that I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal haha. But Ashlee’s hair looks super gross to me… like unwashed and sloppy.

This happens to me a lot by accident…never that extreme though! Ashlee Simpson’s hair looks kind of cool…

I’ve been wanting to try this out, but I don’t know if it’ll work on my hair since it’s so dark. I just want to make it look very very subtle so it’s not obvious, yet at the same time doesn’t look like you’ve just “grown out your roots”. Like right now these two strands framing the side of my face have a very slight color difference near the ends than the rest of my hair. It’s super natural which is what I’d want to do, but I don’t know if it’s possible to achieve that by dying since my hair is so dark. :(

I can’t believe this is even a trend. It looks extremely sloppy.

I think it looks good on girls who wear their hair very textured and loose, like Alexa Chung and Erin Wasson. Ashlee Simpson just looks scary, though.

    October 26th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I agree with Maddie. I think it looks really good on Alexa Chung. (But seriously, I don’t think it’s possible for that girl to look bad!) I think it looks fine on Rachel Bilson though, but Ashlee Simpson’s hair doesn’t look good. I actually think it looks best when it’s a bit more subtle.

i guess im working this look right now because my roots are seriously coming in :X ahhhh
i personally think you need textured hair to somewhat “work” this look, otherwise no.

The colorist that does Whitney Ports hair works at a salon in LA. He has a whole webiste dedicated to the perfect hair color. It’s really great for inspiration just before your next visit to the salon.

The blog not only has pictures of Whitneys hair but also a lot of different shades. The hair make-over videos are my favorite!

NEVER! it looks so gross :(

I’ve done this, but with a red and blonde so it comes off as intentional rather than bad roots.

    October 26th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I am the same as everyone who has said “I am totally working this trend by accident!!”
I am too scared to find a hairdresser over here in the US to recreate my blonde/pink/black hair so I am currently getting some serious roots!!

I’m basically sporting this look right now. Not on purpose – the ends of my hair got a little bleached from the sun this summer and my new hair up top is dark. I’m really not liking it.. so I definitely wouldn’t *pay* to have this done! I’m actually thinking of getting my hair dyed all one color!

  23. 23
    October 26th, 2010 at 7:32 pm

i think this look works well for lighter colored hair, on everyone else it just looks horrible. ashlee and rachael look horrible. its like you are too lazy to go get a touchup. definitely would nt rock the ombre look seeing as how i have dark brown hair.

  24. 24
    October 26th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I also accidentally have this look going. Due to a medication I use, I can no longer dye my hair so the red shine and highlights I used to do is growing out and only on the bottom half now.

  25. 25
    October 26th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

As a brunette, I think this look works best for blondes who have a bohemian/beachy vibe to their style… but if they already love surfing or beach volleyball, they probably have it already going for them. It just brings back memories of summer for me, at least on Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.

  26. 26
    October 26th, 2010 at 10:07 pm

I unfortunately have this look from a mixture of sitting in the sun too long and dying my hair over highlights and not maintaining it. i hate it, but i get compliments on it all the time.

    October 26th, 2010 at 10:14 pm

I love, Love, LOVE ombre hair!! I think it looks so pretty as long as the hair is shiny and styled. I think you can tell the difference between “I didn’t get my roots done” and ombre hair as long as the colors are right and sort of blend together.

  28. 28
    October 26th, 2010 at 10:41 pm

how sad, i was rocking this for about five months and then i cut all six inches of the lighter hair off! just in time for it to be trendy :(( i will say that at a certain length it starts to look sloppy and i didn’t like how the top part of my hair was a lot shinier than the bottom part.

  29. 29
    October 26th, 2010 at 10:43 pm

HELL NO! It looks like they couldn’t afford to dye their roots. The only one that has got it right is Drew Barrymore

I love this. I think it looks fun and stylish.
If it were me I would totally wear it.

I just did an ombre on my hair and I love it! I actually have black hair (I’m Asian) and it is jet black at the roots and a medium brown at the ends.

    October 26th, 2010 at 11:40 pm

I love this trend! I have an appointment to get it done next week. I don’t like the drastic versions, though., I’m getting about 5 colors in the “gradient.” I love Drew’s on that Bazaar cover, Whitney Port and Hillary Duff both have pretty subtle versions also!

  33. 33
    October 27th, 2010 at 12:19 am

No way. I think it just looks like you haven’t gotten your roots done in a very long time.

I so want to try this!!!! :)

  35. 35
    October 27th, 2010 at 12:58 am

I find this weird, kinda like the trend in which people were shaving only one side of their head…I think a celebrity did it, or else my town is strange. In any event, I think it looks horrid. But if someone else loves it, party on. I’m all about “wear what you want to wear because YOU like it.”

  36. 36
    October 27th, 2010 at 1:45 am

The only person in these pictures I think it looks good on is Rachel Bilson. Otherwise I think it’s one of those trends that’s going to be a ‘what were we thinking?’ 10 years down the road.

  37. 37
    October 27th, 2010 at 1:46 am

Haha. My hair was like that naturally just from the sun bleaching it, but I dyed it because I thought my blonde tips looked really dead and unhealthy.

  38. 38
    October 27th, 2010 at 11:54 am

I dont agree with half of the comments. I would wear ombre hair but not many people can pull it off. I personally think that it only looks good if it subtle, or isn’t over powering. Drew and Whitney’s look good, as for everyone else no! And this trend isn’t really new, it just getting big because a lot of celebrities are doing, it will still be a look people will be doing in a couple of years.

  39. 39
    October 27th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I hate it. It says “i’m too lazy go to and get my hair done.”

  40. 40
    October 27th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

After years of bleaching and at home dye jobs, my hair refuses to hold color. So when I get around to coloring my hair (and try to go a few shades darker), the dye fades after a few days, but sticks to my roots. I’ve been wearing my hair like this by default since spring :p

  41. 41
    October 28th, 2010 at 9:54 am

I actually really like this look! I think the trick is to start further down the shaft of your hair so it looks intentional. I already have pretty light hair so I don’t know how I would do it… dye my roots darker? I would def have to see a pro.

I was pretty thrilled when I saw this trend. Hahaha, I got some blonde foils put in my light brown hair a little while ago as a birthday present from my mom, and they’re starting to grow out now, major rootage. I was totally fine with it, but now that it’s a ‘trend’, I feel like not everyone is going to look at me like I’m a lazy ass :P :P

I like Drew’s and Whitney’s hairstyles; they’re almost natural-looking. It’s as if their hair was naturally lightened during the summer, and now their autumn hair is growing out. Very pretty.
The other looks… blech! It looks like they’re trying too hard.

I actually went to get my hair cut this past weekend and my stylist goes “Did you know you have the ombre look?” and at first I had no idea what she meant until she explained it to me, I was just waiting for my summer hair to tone itself down before I dyed it but now I’m embracing the look and yes I got it naturally :) I think it only looks trashy if the bottom is BLEACH blonde and the roots are dark dark dark brown, maybe thats just because my hair is gradual and subtle.. but overall I’m so happy it’s trendy and I don’t have to worry about feeling like my roots are exposed anymore. My hair is a mix between Whitney’s and LC’s… and I love it, its so simple and I don’t have bleach blonde ends or black roots so I think it works out well. And it also helps that I didn’t have to pay a dime for it!

    November 2nd, 2010 at 5:01 am

I think it looks good on celebs because we know they can get their hair done, on real people it may end up looking like we didn’t have money to have it fixed when it grew out ;)

  46. 46
    November 3rd, 2010 at 1:20 am

I think it depends on who’s ‘wearing’ it, actually. If they dress accordingly, it can look fabulous, but if the hair is all messy and looks…unclean, and just bad roots.

  47. 47
    November 3rd, 2010 at 2:19 am

I think it all depends on the style and personality of the person sporting it.

i LOVE this look. I purpose ask my colorist to start highlights at the ends instead of the roots. It makes it so much easier to maintain as hair grows, too!

    that’s called roots… nasty.

I just did this to my own hair, and I LOVE IT! I’m a dyed brunette so it looks closest to ashlee’s only I am not black rooted, just mocha brown.
I definitely think it takes someone daring and brave to try it , and I did it on my own.
It’s different and it will get people looking-I’m willing to take the risk.
I think it’s a hit or miss, either you like it, or you don’t.

    December 13th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I absolutely love it and am lucky because I naturally have that brond/ombre hair. I think dark blonds/light brunettes pull it off best though. Like Gisele Bundchen,Jen Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, that honey hair shade, its looks the most natural. I really don’t care for brunettes doing it, although I’ve seen some pull it off. Like Rachel Bilson does effortlessly. I actually think dying your roots up the the scalp on blondes, can make them look too (albino) and washed out. A little root is HOT!
the “perfect” look has been out for ages! its all about natural,”I spent alot of time on my hair looking messy”, bedhead.

I love my ombre hair!! I never have to get my roots done and it matches my style really well.

I loooooooove this trend! I was kind of heartbroken to see all the negative comments, because I really want to get this done and I don’t want to look “sloppy.” :(

But that picture of Ashlee Simpson is pretty bad…I think Khloe Kardashian’s hair is what made me want to do it! Here are the pictures of ombre hair that I think are super cute/polished (not spam, I promise!):

I have dark brown hair and I want to do lighter at the ends. I loooove when the sun does this naturally! I think it looks best with wavy/curly hair.

There is nothing lazy about not getting touch-ups. Sitting in a salon is NOT like going to the gym.
