Would You Wear.. an Oversized Coat?
Whether you consider yourself a snow bunny or you prefer to hibernate during the cold months, it’s undeniable that winter is coming. With the change of seasons comes a change of wardrobe, so it’s time to pull your coats out of storage. One of the most popular styles this year is the oversized coat, so if you decide to shop for a new one, this is a great style to consider.
The street style looks above show how versatile these coats can be, but the challenge is being able to show your shape when wearing a bulky garment. The best trick is to keep the rest of your look snug and tailored.
Here’s an example outfit incorporating an oversized coat:

Are you a fan of oversized coats?
Will you be investing in a bulky, oversized coat this winter, or opting for a more tailored jacket? Which look above is your favorite? How would you wear one? Leave a comment below and let’s discuss it!

I’m on the fence about these. I like the third coat in the top picture but I don’t like the first – it just looks badly fitted, where as the third looks dramatic. It’ll be interesting to try one of these on and see how I like them in person!

Coats are my favorite thing to shop for–I have an unreasonable amount, I just can’t help myself!
I usually buy coats a size up anyway so I can layer underneath–the only really tailored coats I have are trench coats and peacoats. I think a big coat is a great way to get a little bit of street style but still be functional…

I’m like you Chelsea I have so many coats but I’m not sure that an over sized coat is for me. I usually prefer that my coats are more fitted and give shape.

In the same vein as “buying larger coats so you can layer underneath,” the size of someone’s coat is a pretty good indicator of what part of the country the person’s from. If the person’s coat is pretty darned fitted, to the extent that all they can really wear under it is a shirt, chances are they’re from the south/a warmer climate, where a winter coat isn’t all that necessarily. Somebody who’s from the north/somewhere it’s actually cold’s coat is more likely to be loose, because the weather there gets cold enough that you NEED to be able to wear sweaters and other bulky, warm clothing underneath your jacket.

lovin this new trend!!!! i deff like the far left coat pictured. very cute. :)

I’m not the biggest fan actually. I’m from the cold Northeast, but I prefer to have more fitted outerwear, so I still have a shape. I start wearing coats in October (it snowed before Halloween this year) and coat season usually lasts until March or April. Therefore, I like to still look cute and show off my shape.

I need a pair of knee socks in my life! I love the look of the oversized jacket especially with legging or tights underneath. Super cute.

I’m going to have to agree with several other commenter…as a northern Minnesotan, all my coats are oversized! Even though I intentionally try to pick cute ones, when we regularly have sub-zero temperatures it’s more important to stay warm!
The outfit is super cute, as well.

I never knew that oversized coats are trendy, lol! I got a gorgeous green coat from red cross a few months ago & I’ve been considering getting it fixed because it’s quite huge for me. But by the looks of this post, no need! :)
Luna
I agree that big coats are a necessity for us up north! You really need that extra room for layers and scarves to bundle up :)
I personally love oversized coats! I think they’re a great way to cast an interesting silhouette. I am a big fan of cocoon coats and I just got myself a really nice belted coat which I love because it keeps me snug no matter how many layers I’m wearing underneath.
That and the practicality, I give this a big thumbs up :)
Stari
Ahh probably nott. I’m pretty small as it is so they would just swallow me whole.. Ha :) But good outfit!!

I don’t live in a super cold area (even though I’m always freezing), so layering isn’t a necessity for me. I have to say though, I’m not really digging this trend. I like to wear things that more fitted, as looser things make me look a little “bulky”.

I like the look, but I probably won’t do it myself. I don’t believe it would work well for my body type, and as short girl I’d be a bit worried the coat would completely overwhelm me and make me look even shorter.
Becky
I’m not much of a fan but I have a few oversized coats I have acquired that i like too much to get rid of. I don’t wear them because it never gets cold enough, but I definitely would wear one given the chance
Holly
i can’t imagine that an oversized coat would complement my height of 5’1 but interesting post!
Denny
I can’t see myself with an oversized coat! I can hardly pick a normal coat and what about an oversized… The reason is that I’m a plus size girl and I don’t want to look unnecessary big. But I do love seeing people in them! I think they look super stylish!
Selkie
Well, lucky me! In my closet is a large (even on me), beige, vintage pigskin coat, kind of like a man’s coat, but a woman’s. (If that makes any sense.) And now larger coats are on trend- perfect!
AR
Yes! love that silhouette. I’ve always wanted a navajo print oversized coat, and this article just rekindled that!
Laura Jane
I love this look, but I find oversized clothes drown my frame (I’ve 5ft tall), so I generally stick to tailored pieces.
Michaela
I bought the same coat in the example outfit, but it didn’t fit right at all. The body was perfectly oversized but the arms were hugeeeeeeee. Note to everyone: If you are short DO NOT TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TREND!
