Would You Wear… a Velvet Party Dress?

Whenever the holiday season rolls around, I stare at my closet waiting for something to inspire my party outfit. My normal dresses never seem festive enough for holiday party attire, so I always end up adding sparkly fingernails or a pair of shiny pumps. But velvet party dresses are absolutely perfect for holiday parties, and this year you’ll find them everywhere.

While velvet party dresses are fun, they do have a downside: they’re not versatile and are tricky to wear in other seasons. However, with plenty of cheap options available – like the one below from American Apparel, and more at Forever 21, Topshop, and H&M – it isn’t like a velvet dress is an investment piece.

I have a velvet dress from last winter and I think they are actually quite versatile. With a cardi and boots I can easily wear them to dinner or to get a cup of tea, with heels (or flats) I wear when going out. And I love they are quite decent as they dont show muc skin.

I love the idea. I was actually thinking of trying it this year for Christmas or New years. You guys should definitely consider showing some ways of wearing them.

I absolutely would wear one. In fact, I’m in love with the last teal green one. I’m thinking of possibly getting a velvet dress for New Year’s instead of sequins or glitter as usual.

If I can find one that isn’t too clingy, and has the right amount of modern and 90s style, then definitely!

I had a maroon velvet dress when i was little and it was the one dress i really loved. This year, i found a ‘grown-up’ version, with quarter length sleeves and a slightly fuller skirt so it’s not too clingy! I actualy love the velvet dress thing, it feels so christmassy! Mines has a spotty glitter pattern too, which makes it super-festive! Can’t help feeling like a six year old in it! :)

Yeah I think they can be really cute. But I really don’t like body tight dresses. It’s okay if it’s tight on top or on bottom but not both! So if I can find one like that I would definitely wear one. The dark red/ maroon in the first picture is a really cute color!

Yeah, I really like these. But nothing quite as tight as these, I agree with Josie, maybe a bit more a flouncy mini. Please do another article about how to wear/where to buy!!

I love the look, especially in the pictures you posted. However, I just CANNOT stand the feel of velvet. It looks beautiful, but I literally CRINGE whenever I touch it. I’m not sure why :/

Love the dresses! I think they’re really cute on other people but I personally hate the way velvet feels… It makes my skin crawl. Haha :P but like I said, they look WAY cute on other people! :)

I think they are super pretty, but they would not flatter my body type!

I have a cute black vintage swing dress that my aunt gave me..since it’s a pretty classic cut and color, I usually wear it with cardigans and coats through fall and winter. I’d love to get a fancier one for the holidays though!

I wore velvet dress to Xmas party 2 years ago. I got many compliments. Velvet dress looks classy and fun as long as they are mini.

And their shapes and colors play main role. Black, deep blue, deep green velvet dresses are the great. In my opinion, tight velvet dress is not a good choice. Babydoll, or shif dresses look gorgeous.

I WANT. I think I’ll be making a trip to American Apparel to try one on… they look so cute! I have a masquerade ball to go to, I think the green one with patterned tights and my glittery heels will be perfect!

I love the idea of a velvet dress. As so many others have said, I wouldn’t wear one that’s as tight as the ones featured, but if the skirt flared a bit I would definitely wear it. I’d love to find one in burgundy.
