Confession time: when it comes to dressing in the summer, we reach for what is easy. Thankfully, this means that the return of the pinafore dress is totally in our best interest.

Traditionally a style for young-girls, the grown-up pinafore dress is quirky, fun, and so incredibly comfortable. It can be styled a variety of ways: with a shirt underneath, with a cardigan, with wedges, with boots, or with sandals. The options are virtually endless.

The most popular style right now is by far the denim pinafore. Alexa Chung (pictured above-right), has been spotted several times in her favorite jean dress, and these babies have been popping up in stores everywhere lately. The denim styles have a tomboy vibe, while some of the printed ones are much more feminine.

Here’s how we would style a pinafore…

Definitely not. They’re cute, but I have trouble looking my age as it is.

Sorry, but I stopped wearing those at the age of 5. I dont think they’d suit me at the age of 24!

Not if it’s denim or printed.

Hmm, not completely in love with the look but maybe. The denim looks too childish, maybe a different fabric will do the trick.

Yikes, no thank you! Too childish looking. If I buy a dress, it is all or nothing.

Nope – I look too young already. Wearing a pinafore into a college class = not the look I’m going for. :)

Eh. I’d consider one like the green one on the left… But definitely not one of the denim ones. I couldn’t even pull those off when I was in kindergarten.

This sounds terrible, but to wear one I’d have to tart it up a bit. Otherwise I might look like I still watch Dora.

I already have one :D A plain black one – I find it’s super fun to wear, it can be worn in so many different ways. The material I have it in is nothing like denim, so it feels a lot less like dungarees :P

Probably not… I think it looks just a bit too young for me.

I wore a pinafore dress today, before I even saw the post! How funny is that! I made out of material my dad brought from Africa 10 years ago that we never used and an old pattern from the 1970s of my grandma’s. It’s a great dress
