Would You Wear… a Jumpsuit?

I have to admit, whenever I hear the word “jumpsuit,” my mind immediately runs to Britney Spears in the “Oops, I Did it Again” video. (Oh, the middle school memories!) But don’t worry: although jumpsuits have once again risen in popularity, today’s jumpsuits are a far cry from Britney’s iconic red patent leather number.

Jumpsuits are fall 2010′s extended version of summer’s playful romper trend. These onesies with pants instead of shorts can have many benefits. First, the look can be more versatile than a romper, because you can wear it for evening. The trend can also easily translate in all seasons, from loose and flowy jumpsuits for summer to tailored evening jumpsuits for fall. The look is also quite convenient to put on and easy to wear.

The look can also be figure-flattering if worn properly. Halter necks, belted, and fitted styles complement most body types. Jumpsuits also come in harem and baggy styles which are a little more difficult to pull off.

Jumpsuits can work for everyone!

In my last post about maxi skirts, I received many concerned comments from shorter girls who were worried about being able to wear the trend. The jumpsuit look has similarly been mistaken as a style solely for tall girls, so I thought I would explain how to properly wear it if you are on the shorter side.

  • First, choose a V or a plunging neckline to elongate your body and draw attention up towards your face.
  • Second, choose a capri or ankle length in the legs, and make sure the style is fairly skinny. Stay away from full length, wide-leg jumpsuits, as the extra fabric can sometimes overwhelm a shorter frame.
  • Last, and most importantly, wear heels or sky-high wedges with your look! This will help give added height and make your legs look mile-long.

Sample Outfit

Here is an example outfit to show you how I’d wear a jumpsuit. Notice that I’ve incorporated some of the tips I listed above (they can work for taller girls as well), such as heels and cropped styles, as well as some fun accessories to jazz up the ensemble.

Would you wear a jumpsuit?

Now that you’ve heard my opinions on jumpsuits, I want to know what you think! Leave a comment and tell me if you think the jumpsuit trend is cute, flattering, horrible, or adorable! How would you wear this trend? Is this a look you will be adding to your closet? Do you think this is a style that will go “out” soon?

Would I wear a jumpsuit? Only if I were in prison. I don’t like the continuous color of a jumpsuit or romper. Plus, I think jumpsuits and rompers would create problems when you have to go to the bathroom. Haha. Other than that, love the website! Keep up the awesome work!

Do you think it would be ok to wear these style jumpsuits without heels?

    I’m really tall (5’11)

I think it’s a really cool trend, especially how heidi klum wears it in that picture above!!

i love jumpsuits on other people but I don’t think I’d ever have the guts to wear one myself, even though i’m a massive fan of playsuits!!
i think they look unbelievably effortless and cool but i am neither effortless or cool!!

I agree with everyone above me.. I don’t know if I’m willing to try it just yet, and since I’m only 5’2, I’d definitely have to wear heels and even then I’m not too sure this would work for me. It is a cute look though if you can pull it off.

    rompers? no.
    but jumpsuits?
    YES.
I cannot explain why, but I love this trend. I love the black one on the girl with the sunglasses. I’d totally wear that.

I love the look of jumpsuits but it depends on the fit to really be able to pull it off, I suppose.

Rompers can be difficult to wear simply because of the bathroom situation– we all know how that goes! A playsuit that is too girly can be difficult to wear depending on your age. I still wear playsuits because I am 21 but people mistake me for being 12 (probably because I wear playsuits)! Jumpsuits are a nice alternative to a gown or cocktail dress for formal affairs. They are nice because you can dress them up with flashy jewelry and heels or dress them down with flats and casual jewelry.

I hope the style does not go out soon! I love the look of them and how versatile the styles can be!

I LOVE the black jumpsuit with the white sunglasses, fitted and adorable! The one on the far left model looks a bit frumpy though. Maybe she should have cinched it with a belt.

I love rocking the rompers but haven’t had the guts to wear a jumpsuit yet!!

I think the only person who looks good in a romper or jumpsuit is Padma Lakshmi.

Not a fan of this trend. I don’t like the bagginess of them and find that unflattering. I’m young looking to begin with. I’m going to be a senior in college and people mistake for a senior in high school. I don’t need to make myself look younger than I already do.

I stopped wearing jumpsuits as soon as i was out of diapers, and i dont think i could bring myself to do it again.

As a taller girl, I think it’s actually harder to find a good jumpsuit, simply because every one i’ve tried so far has been too short in the torso and I got a sort of perma-wedgie effect. Given the chance, though, I would totally pick one up!

Jumpsuits are amazing – especially on taller girls (if you can find the right fit of course Maddie :) ) I can’t get enough of the silver belted one

SO this is kind of off topic, but I was wondering if you could do a how to wear boots post. I’m going shopping soon for new things and a great pair(or pairs) of boots is on my wishlist so maybe you could show some options and how to wear them?? Or even later in fall would be cool too! I love this site!
