Would You Wear… a Checker-Print Outfit?

Check it out: the newest spring trend is a seriously statement-making style. Big, bold, checkered pieces give a nod to the mod fashions of the past, but clothiers like Louis Vuitton have re-imagined the pattern for Spring 2013. From suit sets to cool jackets, floor-length gowns to short dresses, there is a checkerboard style for every personality.
But is this trend too dramatic for the everyday college class? Personally, we think the style can work in small doses. Even mixing checkerboard patterns, as seen in the sample outfit below, can be just fine so long as its done tastefully.
Here’s how we would wear this spring trend…

Products: Sweater – Forever 21, Jeans – UNIQLO, Shoes – Charlotte Russe, Clutch – Kate Spade, Bracelets – Guess, Hat – ASOS

I agree–small doses are good!

I think checker print is really cute and mod for spring! It’s so 60s and so graphic and stark, but simple. Black and white is definitely best, and I think it works well on anything with sleek lines and nice tailoring, like a miniskirt or a sheath dress. It definitely has to be the focal point of the outfit but I think it’s really cute and fits the aesthetic of any vintage junkie. My friend has a checkered pencil skirt that she wears with a pink turtleneck sweater and it looks amazing on her, sexy, vintage, stylish, and ladylike all at once.

I love checker print and I’m really happy it’s coming back into style. But while that sample outfit is awesome, it isn’t actually checker print! The clutch is grid print and the sweater is gingham. It’s adorable, but I would have loved to see some examples of affordable checker print pieces.

I personally do not like the sample outfit, but I would be willing to make the checkerboard print pattern work for my spring style :)

I like the checkerboard print but I think it’s a bit too dressy for college. The grid and gingham are definitely alternatives to wear for casual days… but I was hoping for an outfit with checkerboard.
I imagine that the smaller the checkerboard print is, the easier it is to pull it off casually. The other option is to find accessories with the checkerboard print, like a scarf or maybe a bangle.

I quite like Gwen Stefani’s coat, actually- maybe a checkerboard print coat would make a nice accessory for the trend? :)
