Would You Wear… a Cage Dress?

From left: Rihanna in Funktional, Alexander Wang model on the runway, AnnaLynne McCord in Kimberley Ovitz
Now that springtime is upon us, particularly for those of us in less-than-warm climates, clothing becomes more strategic. Getting dressed is all about showing a little skin and avoiding too much layering, but unfortunately it’s still too cold to just throw on a sun dress (here in Canada, at least). One of the perfect sexy solutions for a spring night out is the cage dress.
This look peaks my interest because it is a much stronger, bolder way of showing skin than, for example, sheer clothing. The cage look is also a fantastic trend because it can be worn all over, Alexander Wang style, on part of the dress, a la AnnaLynne McCord, or as just an accent to a dress, as seen on Rihanna’s structured sleeves above.
To be frank, this look is fierce. But how do you wear it? When rocking a cage dress, it’s usually best to keep the rest of the look more simple, like Ms. McCord, to bring the focus to the right place. However, with this style, be bold! Show off the look and just run with it.
Check out a couple of outfits incorporating cage dresses below.
Outfit #1: Less is More

What do you think?
Would you wear a cage dress, or is the look too bold for you? Would you rock the whole thing, or just a touch like Rihanna? Let us know below!

LOVE cage dresses! That Alexander Wang one makes me DIE- so adorable! I’d definitely rock that one. I’m not loving Annalynne’s, though. Maybe it’s her hairdo coupled with the dress, but I just think she looks too space-age and not high-fashion enough.
Hannah
They’re not really my style, but I do like them on others. Annalynne looks great!
I would have loved to see Susie from Style Bubble included in this post. She was on board with the cage trend back in 2008, before it hit the runways!

I totally agree with Ashley–I think cage dresses are really cute. I have an oversized cage sweater that I’m obsessed with at the moment, too. I like how the style shows off your back, but still keeps you mostly covered. Kinda like a sexy surprise! SO cute.
Milana
I love the Kimberly Ovitz dress! So sexy, but elegant and sophisticated! Love it!
Annie
Why am I getting completely different sites when I click the links you provided? For example the link to the dress is the Ped Egg from target..
Dominique
That first dress is SUPER cute! But I think I would need to see the second one on a person to know if I liked it.
Anyway, yeah I think the first outfit is great, and I totally agree that cage dresses are a great transition look. Nice post!
Chelsey
I’d definitely wear this. Not the second one, but the other two are gorgeous!

Fixed the links! Had a few pointed to the wrong place. Thanks for pointing that out, Annie!

Cage sweaters are totally cute. but i’m hesitant on cage dresses. i seriously need, like, a pep talk to get me to wear edgier things.
Sami
Love the first outfit, but I think the boots on the second one make it look a little crazy.
Valeria
I’m loving it! The one Rihanna’s wearing I think is amazing!

Jenna
I love the less is more look. The cage-back dress is super flattering.
I have that Too Faced Natural Eye Kit and I love it! I’ve been using it 3-4 days each week for a quick makeup look for work.
Holly
For me, this look is too harsh.
Maxine
I can never pull off this trend since it is quite revealing:)

loveloveLOVE both outfits- would wear the first to a formal and second to a concert. i dislike the rihanna dress and i’m not fond of the way the alexander wang dress looks on the model, though- i know it’s a runway look, but instead of looking edgy and punk-inspired, it just looks drab and like her dress got caught in a paper shredder. however, i could definitely see it working with the doc martens and those adorable feather earrings… hmm.
