Would You Wear… a Denim Shirtdress?

If the dog days of summer have you missing your easy go-to jeans, this new trend may be the perfect compromise. The denim shirtdress combines – get this – denim, with the ease of a basic shirtdress. The style is much cooler than wearing jeans during the hottest days of the year, but still casual enough for running around.

Of course, this look can be dressed up with the right accessories. Try to contrast the sturdy work fabric with pretty jewelry. Pair it with flats and a summer hat for a on-the-go look. Or, you could even take a page from Julianne Hough’s book and rock a denim shirtdress with booties and an oversize handbag.

Here’s how we would style it…

How would you wear a denim shirtdress?

Or is this look not your style? Do you think Julianne’s look is a trendier way to style it than Reese’s? Will you be investing in this summer staple? Let us know your thoughts by dropping us a line below!

Oh, this is great! I actually got one last year and I’ve never worn it.. I wasn’t really sure about it but now I got some great ideas on how to style it. Thanks girls!

Yes, but only the last look (on the right). Also, a denim shirt dress is loud enough on its own, so I’d keep the accesories to a minimum. That’s just me, though. Good post! :)

I would wear denim dress with a hint of lace or tulle for I feel I have to add something girly to it to make it seem a bit softer.

I love a good summer dress, but denim looks WAY too warm for summer! I like the look of these, though, especially the buttoned-up one that Reese Witherspoon is wearing. If I had one, I’d wait for a crisp autumn day and wear it with tights, boots, and a scarf.

The first two photos make the shirt-dress look terrible! I do like Reese in denim though. I don’t know if I could ever pull it off.. it does feel a little early 90’s to me.

I actually just bought one this weekend at Old Navy! I had actually been looking for more of a denim sundress, but it was so discounted I had to take the plunge.

Wearing it was a bit on the warm side, and it’ll work well into the early fall, but it’s fun for summer too! It’s both something different and classic.

No…I love chambray tops (and jeans, of course!), but overalls and denim dresses look sooooo 90s/”homeschooler” to me. Pass.

I agree that first two dresses are terrible, but I actually really like the Target dress.

Also, @Lauren, the way you used “homeschooler” as a derogatory term is quite offensive. Not all home school students dress frumpy.

I beg to differ, a denim shirtdress is not loud. You could even consider it a neutral, if it doesn’t have fading or other details. I have a button-up similar to Reese Witherspoons that I actually got from the kid’s aisle :) I’ve had it for over a year now and I’m telling you, it’s surprisingly versatile

I found a great denim shirtdress in a thriftstore. They have a full midi skirt and a 3/4 sleeve, I wear them almost constantly – ususally with flats, neon belt and colourful necklace but it goes with virtually everything and is really comfortable.

I love Denim in generally… denim shirtdress is also a very nice and versatile choice… also easy to match .
