Welcome to CF's latest series, Trend Watch. From high fashion to street style, we're covering all the latest trends, then showing you affordable ways to rock each look. This column is all about making super-trendy pieces work for the average college girl, so if you have a trend you would like to see featured here, leave a comment and let us know!
For this Trend Watch post, I'm taking a clue from Cher (clue... Clueless, get it?) and featuring coordinates. Wearing two items in the same print or color has a very preppy and polished vibe, and celebrities are loving this trend. In fact, fashionistas like Taylor Swift and Kate Middleton are constantly spotted wearing two-piece coordinates.
This look is so chic, but be cautious when wearing this trend: matchy-matchy outfits can easily resemble a school uniform and sometimes look too over-the-top for the average college girl. However, the outfits below will show you how to wear matching separates as fabulously as Cher did in Clueless. Scroll down to see all three looks.
Monochromatic in Gray
For a very casual and wearable coordinated look, pair two basics in the same shade together. I chose this cropped gray t-shirt with a matching skater skirt as the base of this outfit. Incorporate some color with a berry-colored knit cardigan. Keep the accessories simple and sleek with pointy-toe black flats and a minimalistic chain necklace.
What I love the most about this outfit is that it consists of wardrobe basics that can be found in almost everyone's closet. You can probably recreate this ensemble without having to spend a bunch of money on new items!
Even though I absolutely adore fall and all its dark, cozy colors, sometimes I feel the need to freshen it up. That's why I love to wear pastels in fall (in my opinion, you can never wear enough pastels), and this look is perfect for a night out or a semi-formal event.
Pair a pastel-colored cropped top with a white skirt and a matching blazer. I think white-on-white can be extraordinarily sleek and I love the elegance it exudes. To finish this ensemble, carry a bag in a different pastel shade, accessorize with a few midi rings, and slip on some comfortable ballet flats.
Fall-ing for Floral
This last look is my favorite because it's the perfect outfit to transition from summer to fall. Unlike the other two outfits, I decided to incorporate an already existing two-piece set from the same retailer. The top and skort combo in this set blends a summer-like floral print with a more fall-appropriate color scheme.
To make the outfit work for colder temperatures, add black tights and throw an olive green parka on top. I chose to accessorize with triangle-shaped drop earrings and rugged brown ankle boots to complete the look.
Which of these three outfits is your favorite? Do you like to wear coordinates? Are you planning to try out any of the ideas? Let us know in the comments below!
