Spring 2010 Shoe Trends

I love when the seasons start to change because it’s always an excuse to buy more shoes. Even though we just had a hardcore blizzard in Philly and everything is covered in snow, I’m already looking forward to updating my shoe collection for spring.

Of course, last year’s sandals and flats will still get plenty of wear, but here are the spring shoe trends I’m most excited about…

Bright Statement Pumps

These are so refreshing and just plain fun when compared to winter’s darker and edgier heels. Any bright color and/or exciting pattern will do for this look, but florals will probably be your safest bet if you’re worried about standing out too much. Keep it classy by sticking with conservative shapes and cuts; the excitement should all be in the pattern. (I couldn’t resist throwing the Giuseppe Zanotti’s in there even though they’re about $600 — so gorgeous.)

Glammed Up Gladiators

I have to admit, I was really slow to pick up on the gladiator trend — in fact, I still do not currently own a pair of gladiators. They’re back again, though, and with more bells and whistles than ever. This year’s gladiators seem to be moving up the ankle, with straps and also a scrunchy hooded look that I’m quite fond of.

For the most flattering look, get these in a nude color so they don’t cut off the line of your leg, but if you want to assert your fashionista side, try black or a bold solid.

Unconventional Flats

As the weather slowly warms up and it no longer feels like torture to expose your feet, it’ll be time to start trading out your heavy winter boots for whimsical spring flats. I adore the huge variety of styles to experiment with this year. These playful looks will definitely add that “pop” to any outfit.

Oxfords and oxford-inspired styles are all over the place, as are demure vintage looks. You could also experiment with the canvas sneaker effect — classic Keds make a great investment piece.

The Winner

And here is my absolute favorite shoe from this week’s browsing adventures:

alice + olivia for Payless

It doesn’t really follow any of the trends I just described above but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m crazy about it. I love the shape, the height, the colors, the perfect combination of simplicity and detail; the other side also has a beautiful exposed zipper, see here. This just goes to show that while fashion trends are fun and make for great inspiration, you sometimes need to look beyond what everyone else is scrambling over to find what you’re in love with.

What do you think?

What shoe trends are you most excited about for spring? Have you already done some early spring shopping? Or — do you have favorites from last year that you’re going to wear again? Would you try any of these trends? Leave a comment and tell us your thoughts!

The only one of these trends I like is the statement pumps. I have a pair of bright pink pumps that I love to wear during the spring and summer with jeans and dresses. I unfortunately do not have the legs to pull off the gladiator sandals. I think you offered a great variety and price points for all of your suggestions. Great article!

I think my favorite are the statement pumps, especially those with flower accents, they’re so pretty and lady-like, my favorite look!

    Great post, I love it!!

However, is anyone else incredibly irritated that the web page constantly reloads itself? Is there anyway to turn it off?? I think its the mercedes benz fashion week feed…please, please give us the option to turn this off, the constant refreshing is driving me crazy and makes me not want to visit this site as much :(

I HATE HATE HATE that hooded gladiator thing. It’s like “let me keep my ankle warm but freeze my toes” OR “my toes are comfortable but my ankle is sweating”

    But that’s just me.

I really like the unconventional flats, and some of the pumps (LOVE the floral) are cute but I would prefer a shorter heel.

Overall, I’m not a big fan of shoes; their okay but I never want them to be the focus of my outfit. I’m weird, I know.

Yes! I discovered those Alice + Olivia for Payless shoes a day or two ago and fell in love with them. Can’t wait for them to hit my local store so I can see them in person. And I’ve been eyeing those Target statement pumps for a while. So awesome.

I love the unconventional flats! They’ve got an old school charm look about them. Great post! Honestly, I’m not crazy about the statement pumps, but I realize that I’m jaded against bright patterns on my shoes. Great post! I put a similar type of shoe up on thevspotblog.wordpress.com.

Hey, I like your ideas, and I thought of a brand you might like.. I don’t know if you already know it and if it even exists in the US, but have a look at “mellow yellow” shoes.. they’re awesome and some look just like the ones above.. :)

Great post!~ The tealish colored pumps in the first row, literally made me gasp. And I cant believe its available at payless! I’m getting them ASAP! I too have been looking for an excuse to buy shoes.
I love the idea of gladiator sandals but I have no idea how to pull it off. An article sure would be helpful (hint hint). :D

I loved those pumps! the floral prints are really cute for spring ! but I dont think the gladiator sandals are cute, cuz the upper part is so big while the under part is weaker so I dont think they look good on me :)
aand the flats.. They re the most general type of my shoes because of that I liked the blue one and the converse but I mostly like ballet flats :) cute article :)

I totally agree about the Alice + Olivia heels! They are beyond fabulous! But do you have any suggestions about how to wear them? I want to buy them so bad, but I am worried that I won’t ever wear them… Help?? Thanks and GREAT post!

I’m not really one for heels, but I like the flats!

Glad gladiators are still in. It’s been all about flats and boots for me this past autumn and winter. And way to go payless! Gorgeous shoes!

But I’m a size 10 and for some reason it’s a sin for them to produce pretty heels for girls with big feet!!!

I totally agree with Dominique! I mean… what’s the point? I’ve seen LOTS of ways to use this so called “trend” and I see them all just wrong… as bad as clogs! (OK, I’ve finally let that out!)

The only right way to wear that ankle wrapped thing in my personal opinion is the one in the “Unconventional Flats” group, we see a ballerina flat and then it goes up like a boot but it also has this sort of laces that make that footwear really Unconventional (which is the point) feminine and versatile.
