I have the Aveeno Continuous Sunblock Lotion in SPF 30, and its okay for every day and even the beach, but I went on a sailing trip this weekend and it DID NOT work well enough. I have major sunburn and I was using it regularily throughout the day.
When you need intense protection (like when you’re out on the water with the sun beating down on you for 3 days) use something else. The one featured in this article is SPF 55 so maybe it’s better, but don’t use the SPF 30 like I did! Yikes. :(

Liz – Good call! I am not a hat person but hats are definitely great for the beach and help you avoid scalp sunburns.

Elisabeth – Ooh, iPod! Good one!

Alana – Sarongs are amazing.. definitely great if you don’t feel like going the route of a full-on outfit and just want a simple cover up.

Maria – Be careful with tanning oil! It doesn’t provide any SPF and will cause sun damage. Go with a fake tan, it will keep your skin looking young for longer and won’t put you at risk for skin cancer!

Kimi – Ooh, will have to check out the aerie bottles! As for waterproof mascara, it’s pretty much the only makeup I’ll wear to the beach, but as someone with super blonde eyelashes, it’s a must for me. For those with brown hair (and eyelashes that are actually visible without mascara) of course it’s not an absolute essential.

Hannah – Ah, I love those! Good ideas :)

Ashley – You’re right about spray sunscreen – so easy to put on and it is also fun.

Liz – Great suggestion. Brightly colored pedicures are SO much fun for summer!

Sofia – I think it depends on the natural shade of your eyelashes. For me, I’m a natural blonde, so my eyelashes are invisible without mascara.. it’s not a cute look. If you have naturally dark lashes, skip it! Also, waterproof mascara does work – the whole point is that it’s not supposed to come off easily. And PLEASE be careful with the tanning lotion! SPF 8 is not enough to protect your skin from sun damage and can increase your risk for skin cancer. It might be okay if you have naturally dark skin and only use it occasionally, but as a general rule you need to wear at least SPF 15 to protect your skin! Being tan is not as important as being healthy & taking care of yourself <3

i actually think mascara is not necesary for the beach outfit.. and.. the waterproof.. its a lie.. i tried it once and i spent my day trying to take it off! Beside you are at the beach! the ideal outfit doesnt include mascara.. unless you are at a beach party!
And.. sometime u need some tanning lotion my favourite is babana boat’s Deep Tanning SPF 8 Lotion with Green Tea (bananaboat.com) and Australian Glod’s High Energy Tanning® Lotion (australiangold.com) they are great! and i love australian gold cause they help you select the best product for your skin!

I would also add, though this isn’t an item, to get a pedicure with a really fun shade before hitting the beach. I love seeing vivid shades against the sand – it just enhances the whole experience.

And I have tried the Aveeno sunblock for face and it’s amazing! Not greasy or sticky at all. (Oily and acne-prone skin here.)

But, i must say, i looveee spray sunscreen.. it’s so fun to put on and not sticky like the cream ones.

Bring a volleyball or those colorfull beach balls!

Aerie has some really cute aluminum waterbottles, too. I use mine almost every day.
And about the waterproof mascara thing, I DON’T WEAR MASCARA! I think girls totally overdo the makeup thing.

Big, colorful hats! :D I agree with Liz and Jennifer. and tanning oil if you want to have a nice tan :). I also agree with Alana, a sarong is definitely a must for me who lives in Indonesia. It’s cheaper than a towel and very useful for a lot of stuff.

And you mustn’t forget the camera to capture that perfect moment! :D
