Shhh--stop telling everyone how awesome vintage is--it'll become too mainstream!

I love consignment as well as vintage -- note the difference! As someone who prides herself on shopping vintage a lot and dressing out of the 40s and 60s, I hate when people call consignment shops like Plato's Closet "vintage."

One thing you should be careful of is that a lot of consignment shops (especially the ones that don't pay the consignors) carry heaps and heaps of fake designer merchandise. One of my favorite consignment shops does this, and they are very fair about noting it on the tag (e.g. the tag will say "Chanel copy" or something). Other stores might not be so fair, though, so if the price on a designer item seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I wish there were thrift stores around here, but there are only department stores, outlets, malls, and boutiques. The best chance I have is to shop at the mall or the outlet store for sales.

If you are embarrassed about shopping at Thrift stores, you can just disguise the name when in public. I like to shop at Value Village and Goodwill. While in public, I have assigned the names "VV" and "GW" or "a little shop in my town." This way, you don't have to reveal the fact that you are a thrift store shopper.

I LOVE thrifting. Seriously one of my favorite activities. I'd say at least 60% my wardrobe is used. I started thrifting when my mom decided I needed to finance my own wardrobe.

I most often go to Buffalo Exchange and Goodwill (my city is lucky enough to have one of their stores where they send the super awesome items - I've found Prada, Pucci, Dooney & Burke, North Face, Armani etc... all in seriously amazing condition). It's surpring what you can find at thrift stores when you spend a little time and have an open mind.

I've got a bit of an issue shopping at "thrift stores" (my family calls them resell-it shops) due to getting most of my clothes from there when I was younger. As someone who grew up poorer, I always wanted new name brand clothing but at 22 I'm finally starting to get past my reservations. Hopefully I'll get a chance to use these tips this summer when I'm looking for a new wardrobe to transition from college student to full on adult.

Thrift stores are amazing, though you're definitely right about it depending on the location of the thrift store. My personal favorite is the Unique thrift chain in Chicago - I always find something at their stores, my most recent find being a gold pair of Chinese Laundry heels for $3 :)

Thrifting? Who came up with that term? Thrift stores are stores like Goodwill and your local Cancer society, but you'll find the best and most current fashions at consignment stores. I've had the best luck at the stores that don't pay outright for their clothes but take them on consignment where the consignor receives 40%-50% of the selling price. It's not uncommon to find many items with the original tags still on them. Anyway, stay away from the "thrift" stores and check out your local consignment boutique!
